About Cara

Cara is a band formed in 2003, rooted in Irish and Scottish traditional music, but with ambitions to create a new and unique sound. Each of the four musicians has made a name for themselves at home and abroad through their involvement in various projects and got together in this line-up to create their own world of music. CARA members have played with: More Maids, Adaro, DeReelium, Steampacket, La Marmotte, Deirin Dé — not including many guest studio and stage appearances.

Gudrun Walther
vocals, fiddle, viola, button accordion

Gudrun was brought up in a musical family with Irish and French folk music and started to play traditional music on the fiddle at the age of six. Classical training provided a solid technical basis which made her Germany's probably youngest professional in traditional music at the age of nineteen. Now she can look back on many successful engagements, being involved a studio or guest musician in many recordings and concerts with bands and orchestras. Gudrun is a member of all-women band More Maids. “Gudrun Walther could certainly hold her own in any Irish musical setting.“ (Dirty Linen Magazine, Jan 04)

Sandra Steinort
vocals, flutes, piano

Sandra studied music at the renowned Folkwang College in Germany and is classically trained on piano and singing. Soon she fell in love with traditional music and discovered the wooden flute, which now is her main instrument. Her sweet and mellow soprano voice has developed through the years while she sang in various a-capella projects and - needless to say - in many a singing sessions in Ireland.

Jürgen Treyz
guitars

Jürgen studied guitar at the MGI in Munich. During that time he also became engaged with traditional and medival music. In 1993 he founded the artes recording studio which specialises in acousitic and traditional music. Being involved in radio plays, theatre plays and TV productions as a guitarrist, composer and arranger, he has published over 50 albums with his own music and was repeatedly rewarded with the renowned Prize of the German Record Reviewers. In 2002, he and his band "Adaro" published the album "minnenspiel", which was highly praised by the critics and even by Deep-Purple founder Ritchie Blackmore.

Claus Steinort
flutes, uilleann pipes, concertina

Apart from being highly skilled on the Irish flute in technical and stylistic terms, Claus produces a distinctive tone and an expressive flow which make his playing truly unique. Having spent much of his time in Ireland, he has developed and polished a musical style which has absorbed influences from other instrument players such as pipers and fiddlers. Claus is a founding member of the bands Dereelium and Steampacket.

Rolf Wagels
bodhran

Rolf is featured on the Cara-CD "In Colour" and supports the band on many live performances. He's well-known in Germany and has a high reputation among Irish musicians. He's a member of DeReelium and Steampacket.

Tola Custy (guest musician)
fiddle

Since early 2006, Tola Custy, (fiddle player from Ennis, Co. Clare) occasionally supports us on tour. He will also be featured on our new CD which is due in winter 2006/07. He has become renowned in the Irish music scene for his playing with singer and bouzouki player Cyril O'Donoghue. He is a founding member of the celebrated band Calico. Being deeply rooted in the Clare tradition, he has developed a very distinctive style, sweet - yet powerful

2 Duos

2 Duos” consists of Aaron Jones of “Old Blind Dogs” on bouzouki, guitar, bass and vocals. Aaron won “Instrumentalist of the Year” in 2005 after winning “Folk Band of the Year” in 2004 with “Old Blind Dogs” at the Scots Traditional Music Awards. The accompaniment provided by Jones is solid without being obtrusive and he’s no mean chanter either. Claire Mann is on flute, fiddle, whistle and vocals. Claire’s an all-Ireland flute champion demonstrating beautifully controlled intonation along with some fine fiddle playing. Gudrun Walther is one of Germany’s finest on vocals, violin, and viola. And Germany’s multi-instrumentalist Jürgen Treyz on acoustic guitar, 12-string, dobro, mandolin, mandola, telecaster, and vocals.

On a foundation of the traditions from Scotland, Ireland and Germany, “2Duos” has become one band and a common musical language has emerged between them. Being four of the most renowned and successful folk musicians in Europe, the two partnerships produce such skillfully fashioned music that they can only be described as musical soulmates. The musicians of “2 Duos”, each one of them an internationally touring musician, met each other at various festivals throughout Europe where they put together sessions and exchanged their musical backgrounds. On their last tour in Germany, in fall 2006, Claire Mann and Aaron Jones had a few days off and visited with their German colleagues. Long nights filled with music – German, Irish and Scottish, all well mixed – led to the idea to start a combined tour of the four musicians, hence “2 Duos”.

This exciting Celtic/German Folk experience will take you on a delightful journey of fast-paced jigs and joyful tunes complete with slower, more thoughtful melodies of heartfelt ballads. “2 Duos” has it all and they wish to share their energetic performance here in Tubac for the first time ever! This is one high-spirited group you don’t want to miss.

The concert and workshop both take place at the Tubac Plaza Main Stage next to the “Out Of The Way Galleria” at 29 Tubac Plaza in Tubac, Arizona. In case of rain, events will be held indoors at 26 Tubac Plaza across the street from the “Out Of The Way Galleria”. All ages.
