Irish Musical “A Man of No Importance” Opens Sept 9 At Scottsdale Desert Stages Actor’s Café The heartwarming Irish musical A MAN OF NO IMPORTANCE is on stage at Scottsdale Desert Stages Actor’s Café, beginning September 9, 2005 and continuing with no end date. Performances are 7:30 pm Fridays and Saturdays.
From the creators of Ragtime comes this rare gem of a musical that shines a spotlight on love, self-acceptance and the transforming power of theatre. Based on the 1994 Albert Finney film of the same name, it’s the funny and tender tale of Alfie Byrne, an Oscar Wilde-loving bus driver in 1960’s
Dublin, who spends his off-hours directing an amateur group of thespian misfits called St. Imelda’s Players. The dedicated group is determined to stage the controversial “Salome” (complete with its scandalous ‘Dance of the Seven Veils’)—to humorous and disastrous results. The play’s sensuality raises the ire of church authorities, and in the ensuing struggle in the name of art, we discover three appealing characters who are in a struggle themselves—with finding love, in what society calls, “all the wrong places”.
Beautiful and spirited Irish melodies by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty weave their way through this sometimes comic, ultimately moving, story of human passion that asks us to walk in the shoes of others and listen with our hearts. Jim Carmody directs this production which is performed in Scottsdale Desert Stages Theatre’s intimate Actor’s Café. Tickets are $22 ($20 seniors and students) in advance; $25 day of show.
