ONE EYED FIONA
By George L. O'Brien
With the release of their self titled CD, One Eyed Fiona will soon be
known outside the Irish music scene for more than just the most memorable
band name in the state. Now they will be known for their music.
In the name of full disclosure, I will point out that I am mentioned
in the liner notes. Since this is the only album cover I have ever been
mentioned on (as far as I know), there is the risk that I would give the
CD a better review than it deserves.
Fortunately I don't have that problem. One Eyed Fiona has done a fine
job.
Jerica Turner is an outstanding fiddle player and much of the CD showcases
her talent with reels and jigs. In addition to her playing, the CD has
several songs written by Jerica such as "The Lost Dog Reels", "The March",
and "Weasel Boy." Guitarist Chris Turner wrote "Southwest Sunset, did some
of the vocals, and was the "producer" of the CD.
Most of the vocals are performed by Mark Rice, a relative newcomer to
the group, who shows why he was recruited. Karen Turner (sister of Chris
and sister-in-law of Jerica) plays the bodhran. Dennis Pustcher was a guest
performer adding acoustic, upright base and synthesizer.
One Eyed Fiona (the CD) gives real life to traditional Irish music.
Based on the response they received at the Flagstaff Celtic Fair and some
local coffee house gigs, their style appeals to a broader audience than
simply traditional Irish music fans.
Let me say I'm proud to have my name associated with this fine CD.
