GENERAL INFORMATION ON RETREATS:

WHERE:

Beautiful Sedona, in northern Arizona - most events will be at the Sedona Harp Center. (For events with a large number of registrants, a larger venue in Sedona will be used.)

WEATHER:

In the winter months, it can be anywhere from 30 to 70 degrees during the day, so bring appropriate clothing. In April, May and October, it is usually in the 80's. Bring sun protection.

SCHEDULE:

For retreats (except the January and October events), we will gather at 2 PM on Friday, with an introduction to your instructors, tuning, orientation, dinner, and a harp activity. On Saturday, we will have classes from 9 to 12 and 2 to 5. Saturday evening may feature a private, informal concert by your instructors. On Sunday, class will be from 10 to 2, followed by a celebratory meal for those who wish to go to a nice restaurant.

FOOD:

Friday: for most retreats, a dinner buffet will be served at the studio. Saturday lunch is potluck, which have been delicious at past retreats, and they save a lot of money (there are several grocery stores and a natural deli nearby); and dinners will be at nearby restaurants (there are several within walking distance).

ACCOMODATIONS:

If you like convenience, you can make reservations at the Super 8 Motel in Sedona (928-282-1533 or toll free 877-800-4749), which is where the airport shuttle comes (see below under "Transportation - Flying"). That way, you will not have to take a taxi anywhere, you can arrange to share a room with one or two other participants, and you can carpool to the event or classes. If you wish more luxurious accomodations, call the Chamber of Commerce (928-282-7722) and also see more shuttle info below. If you're on a budget, the lowest prices in town are at the Red Rock Lodge (928-282-3591) and La Vista Motel (928-282-7301). There are also campgrounds and RV parks. Sedona is a mecca for retreats, and accomodations can book up very far in advance, so make yours in a timely fashion. You are responsible for your own motel reservations, but please let Laurie know ASAP if you wish to share a motel room, and with how many others, and she will let you know who else wants to share, so you can reserve your room accordingly.

TRANSPORTATION:

Flying: fly into Phoenix, and take the Sedona Shuttle. Call in advance 928-282-2066 for shuttle reservations. If you are not staying at the Motel 8, Ace Express Shuttle at 928-649-2720 is a bit more expensive but will drop you anywhere you need to go. Please do not bring your luggage to to the Sedona Harp Center. Go to your place of accomodation first and get settled.

Driving:

From the north, take 1-40 to Flagstaff and go south on 89A through Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona. To get to the Harp Center, continue on 89A through "uptown", continue to West Sedona; Inspirational Drive is on the left next to the Red Planet Diner; second house on left #45, left side of duplex has sign on door that says "Sedona Harp Center".

From the south, take 1-17 from Phoenix to 179 to Sedona. To get to the Harp Center, turn left on 89A, go about a mile to Inspirational Drive (on the left next to the Red Planet Diner); second house on left #45, left side of duplex has sign on door that says "Sedona Harp Center".

GETTING YOUR HARP to SEDONA:

The Sedona Harp Center often has, but cannot guarantee, extra harps to rent. It is best to bring your own harp. If you cannot, please let Laurie know so she can try to reserve a harp for you.

The FAA has new rules that allow one small musical instrument to be carried on board in addition to the usual allowed carry-ons. For more info, e-mail Laurie for a document on airline regulations.

If you don't have a flight case, an excellent lightweight one can be ordered from Colorado Case Company. Please see their ad in the Folk Harp Journal. Harps in flight cases no larger than luggage can be checked in as oversize baggage for special handling at no charge if you have only one other suitcase. Harps larger than luggage can be checked in as oversize baggage for a fee. If you ship your harp to the Harp Center via UPS or Fed Ex, notify Laurie in advance and she will give you the correct shipping address and instructions for packing. Laurie cannot be legally responsible for your harp's well-being, but will store it unopened until you arrive. If you don't yet own a harp and wish to buy one, it can shipped to her studio in time for the workshop if you order NOW. Laurie sells William Rees harps, and you can e-mail her at laurieharp@earthlink.net . William makes three sizes of double-strung harps. Only orders received two months or more in advance can be ready in time. If you order a harp from another company, you may arrange to have it shipped to Laurie's studio, but she cannot guarantee a delivery date, of course.

RETREAT TUITION:

$250 until one month before the retreat; thereafter $295. (Late registrations can result in being placed on a waiting list.) Tuition covers pre-retreat logistics and communications, Friday night buffet at the harp center, orientation, class handouts, snacks, and 12 hours of classes and fun. (This rate does not apply to the Harp Professionals Retreat or the October Conference):
