Old Blind Dogs Concerts

Once again the Old Blind Dogs grace us with their incredibly talented presence to perform for Arizona audiences. They have a brand new album coming out this spring, Play Live, on Green Linnet. If you missed the Old Blind Dogs last year, you missed a fantastic show!! They had the 320+ member audience dancing and singing along with the music. I didn’t see anyone leave without a huge smile on their face.

For those of you that are not familiar with OBD, they are comprised of:

Jonny Hardie (fiddle, guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, backing vocals) As a founding member of Old Blind Dogs, Jonny's feisty fiddle is a trademark of the band's sound. He was brought up in Aberdeenshire, where he was encouraged to take up music at an early age. He went on to study classical viola at the Aberdeen School of Music, and played in a variety of local bands after college. He has made great contributions to the Scottish music revival as Musical Director for the Aberdeen City Council and Kinkardine and Deeside Council. Jonny has a number of musical projects including composing for television and film, recording solo and duo CDs, and is an in-demand producer and guitarist.

Rory Campbell (whistle, border pipes, backing vocals) Rory was raised in Central Scotland and in a family that fully encouraged the uptake of music from an early age. His father is a respected piper and singer from the Isle of Barra. Rory began playing in pipe bands at the age of 12, and around that time he also picked up the whistles. One of Scotland's finest young pipers, Rory also composes many of the band's original tunes. In addition to his work with Old Blind Dogs, Rory is a member of the group Deaf Shepherd. He has recorded a solo album called The Piper's Whim and two albums with Deaf Shepherd bandmate Malcolm Stitt.

Aaron Jones (bouzouki, guitar, electric bass, vocals) Born in Poole, England into a musical family from Northern Ireland, Aaron took up the bouzouki at the age of sixteen. An innovative multi-instrumentalist and gifted singer, he is called "one of the best cittern players I've ever seen" by Sean Laffey, editor of Irish Music Magazine. Aaron is well known through his work with the Belfast band Craobh Rua. Now living in Scotland, he is a sought-after accompanist, performing with such top young groups as Tabache, Seelyhoo, Burach and Iron Horse, as well as his duo projects with Claire Mann.

Fraser Stone (percussion) Raised in the highlands of Scotland in the small town of Granton-on-Spey, Fraser has been playing drums since the age of six. His teen years were spent learning the techniques of African percussion and playing traditional music with his first traditional band, Skoosh. Fraser has also done session work in rock, blues, jazz, samba and traditional Cuban music. He has been involved with productions with Scottish Youth Theatre and acted as musical director for drama productions and festivals.

The Old Blind Dogs have this magical way of blending traditional Scottish tunes and songs with different rhythms and harmonies to create an out-of-this-world sound that can only be described as riveting. This band plays something that everyone will enjoy to the maximum. They shouldn’t be missed!!

Hailed as "one of the most popular contemporary Scottish folk groups," Old Blind Dogs play traditional songs fueled by dynamic percussion and bluesy harmonica. The band has performed at Celtic, World and Folk festivals to international acclaim. The Scotsman writes, "They play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm… when players and audience

Old Blind Dogs from Scotland. This is Scotland's hottest traditional band and gives a great show. "One of the original cutting edge outfits in Scotland continuing new roots revival!"

"The skill, talent and verve with which they played, belied their laddishness and the crowd responded with thunderous applause. Folk is the new rock and roll." Shoots and Roots Festival, April 1999 (Evening News).

The Scotsman writes, "They play with a compelling energy and intoxicating rhythm… when players and audience seem to share a wild ecstasy of emotion">
