ARIZONA IRISH MUSIC SOCIETY
BLOOMSDAY CELEBRATION
AT THE IRISH CULTURAL CENTER THUR JULY 16

I
want to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city suddenly disappeared
from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book.
--James Joyce about Ulysses
On 16 June, Joyceans in over sixty countries celebrate the fictional account
of a day in the life of Leopold Bloom, his wife Molly, Stephen Dedalus, and
"all the great talkers of Dublin" with people in Edwardian dress giving
readings from various episodes of Ulysses. In his novel, Joyce sought to capture
the Dublin of 1904.
This year, on Thursday, 16 June 2006, we will bring Bloomsday to the Irish Cultural Center, featuring readings of Ulysses by Arizona Readers Theater, a costume contest, food and cash bar, a screening of the films The Dead and Bloom, a silent auction with vintage items for sale, and plenty of semi-literary partying. "In the eyes of many, it's easier and a lot more fun than trying to work your way through Ulysses," says event organizer Dr. Mary Aldridge of Mesa Community College.
The
Center opens at 10:00 a.m. There will be showings of "Joyce to the World"
throughout the day. Starting at 4:00 PM students in costume will answer questions
about James Joyce and Ulysses. The Arizona Readers Theater present readings
from Ulysses at 6:00 pm.
The theme for the costume contest is "circa 1904"-Irish, European, Western, Mexican, or any traditional dress of the period-in keeping with Joyce's "global" vision. Contest judging will take place between 7:00pm and 7:30pm. Prizes will be awarded for best female, male, and child's costumes.
Admission to all activities is free and open to the public. There will be a cash bar and lunch served during the day.
