WHAT IS THE ARIZONA IRISH MUSIC SOCIETY?

The Arizona Irish Music Society was formed to help promote Irish and Celtic music in Arizona.  This involves informing the public about performances of Irish and Celtic music while encouraging musicians to perform Irish and Celtic music.

WHY IS AN IRISH MUSIC SOCIETY NEEDED IN ARIZONA?

The Arizona Irish Music Society (AIMS) was established to encourage more people to become interested in Irish music: both as performers and as an audience for Irish music.
Touring performers such as the Chieftans, Mary Black, Altan, and so on attract audiences of thousands of people. Yet these people are generally ignorant of the local Irish music scene. AIMS intends to change this by promoting Irish/Celtic music and the local Irish performers.

HOW WILL THE ARIZONA IRISH MUSIC SOCIETY PROMOTE IRISH MUSIC?

1. Provide a master calendar of Irish/Celtic music performances through the  web, e-mail, and by sending information to the newspapers.

2. Provide a master directory of local Irish performers and venues.

3. Publish news and articles about Irish music and local Irish performers – all of which will be included on the web site.

4. Promote visiting Irish musicians while publicizing the local Irish music scene.

5. Purchase advertising for the Arizona Irish Music Society in various publications.

6. Register the web site and link it to various entertainment web sites and search engines.

7. Set up fair booths at various local events to promote Irish music.

8. Co-host concerts and other music events.

WHAT IS IRISH MUSIC?

Irish music includes music that originated in Ireland, was written by Irish composers, and original music written in a style influenced by Irish music. This takes in everything from the Chieftans to U2.

WHAT IS CELTIC MUSIC?
Celtic music includes traditional styles of music from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany (France), Galicia (Spain), and Cape Breton (Canada).

The term "Celtic" is also used to describe original music that has a kind of "mystical" feel and is only loosely connected to traditional music.

Some bands that are listed on the AIMS band directory only do a small amount of material that is clearly "Irish" or "Celtic", but do at least some Celtic music some of the time.

WHAT IS A SEISIUN?

A seisiun is a traditional Irish session (don't call it jam) where musicians gather to play. Seisiuns provide opportunities for musicians to learn about traditional Irish music, improve their skills, become comfortable playing with other musicians, and sometimes make contacts for forming groups. People with limited musical talent are encouraged to join in by singing along, playing “spoons” or shaking rattles.

Most of all, seisiuns are about having a good time.

WHAT ARE LINKS?

Links are direct connections between one web site and another. It is not necessary to enter the web site's address (know as a URL). Just click on it.

There will be two kinds of links. One kind will take the user to an “informational” web site. Categories will include sites by local and touring performers, Irish music and Irish news sites, as well as other related sites. General entertainment sites and those of other music and arts organizations will be set up on a reciprocal basis.

The second kind of site will be e-commerce sites. Emphasis will be on links related to Irish music, books, videos, travel, and other subjects of interest. Commissions from purchases made through these sites will be used to support the goals of the Arizona Irish Music Society.

HOW IS THE ARIZONA IRISH MUSIC SOCIETY (AIMS) GOING TO BE FUNDED?

AIMS will use several means to get money:

1. Establish a sponsorship program. Each sponsor will given a listing on the web site and public recognition of their support. Premium sponsors will be given the authority to mention their sponsorship in their advertising, i.e. “A proud sponsor of the Arizona Irish Music Society – www.azirishmusic.com”

2. Sign up for various affiliate programs sponsored by various web businesses. The money they pay in commissions for the advertising space being offered will increase as more people go to these sites from the www.azirishmusic.com. Supporters of Irish music will be able to help out every time they buy something through the internet.

3. Hold fundraisers.  Many other organizations in the Irish community have had success holding events using local Irish musicians. The AIMS fundraisers should be especially successful because the musicians will be involved in publicize the event.

4. Raffles and auctions. In conjunction with the fund raiser, it should be possible to get items to raffled and auctioned off. Often people are more willing to donate small items than to give money. At the same time, major sponsors like the publicity they get when tickets are sold for major raffle items.

5. Sell promotional items. Possible items include T-shirts, coffee mugs, window stickers, and music CD’s by local Irish musicians.

6. Establish a “Paid Supporter” program. These people would receive various “thank you” gifts (promotional items) when they contribute to AIMS.
