FROM - LIVING TRADITIONS PRESENTATIONS - FLAGSTAFF

Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill are an amazing Irish fiddle and guitar duo that have toured all around the world. The Irish Echo says “There’s no more impressive partnership in Irish instrumental music today than Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill.” Martin Hayes has been the All-Ireland Fiddle Champion six times over, has taken home an National Entertainment Award (Irish equivalent to the Grammy) and was named the Folk Instrumentalist of the Year in 1999 by the BBC Radio Awards. Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, versed as well in classical, blues and rock, as he is in traditional music. Cahill’s innovative accompaniment is acknowledged as being a major breakthrough from guitar in the Irish tradition.

Hayes & Cahill have performed in Flagstaff twice before, both times to audiences that were awed by the music and performance, and demanded encores. This musical duo is one not to miss by any fan of Celtic music or of stellar musicality. The musical rapport between Hayes and Cahill is so strong that it is often said they appear to be playing one instrument.

FROM - IN CONCERT - TUCSON

One of the finest duos touring today, Martin and Dennis perform what can best be described as "a conversation between the two of them and the music," intense to humorous, touching on jazz and classical, creating a cross-cultural musical experience. Martin is from from County Clare, and Dennis from Chicago with Irish parents. The duo played to three full and enthusiastic Tucson audiences from 1996 to 1999. Previously,Martin won the All-Ireland Fiddle Championship 6 times and in 1999, he was namedFolk Instrumentalist of the year by BBC Radio. Since that time, they have performed many times on A Prairie Home Companion and toured worldwide. The duo collaborated with Sinead O'Connor in a special stage performance of the book If I Could Read the Sky. They recently completed the score for an award-winning documentary by Dierdre Lynch,Photos to Send, based on photographs of the people of County Clare in 1953. The L.A. Times says of the show: "A climactic display of creativity from a pair of gifted, cross-cultural artists." The Syndey (Australia) Morning Herald calls Martin "the Yehudi Menhuin of the Irish Fiddle."

Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill possess a rare musical kinship, ranking them among the most memorable partnerships of our era. Together they have garnered international renown for taking traditional music to the very edge of the genre. Listeners are held spellbound with the ever-intensifying, fiery performances. The duo is opening the doors of traditional Irish music and releasing its pure, distilled beauty, incorporating sensibilities from the worlds of classical, blues, and jazz.

Martin Hayes has been an All-Ireland fiddle champion six times over and has taken home a National Entertainment Award (an Irish Grammy so to speak). Martin plays in the slow, lyrical style of his native East County Clare. Dennis Cahill, a native of Chicago, is a master guitarist, versed as well in classical, blues, and rock as he is in traditional music. His innovative accompaniment is acknowledged as being a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. In addition to performing with Hayes, Cahill has also worked with Liz Carroll, Eileen Ivers, and Kevin Burke, as well as being a regular at Chicago's session scene, with musicians such as Lawrence Nugent, Liz Knowles, and Kieran O'Hare.

The musical rapport between Martin and Dennis is so strong that it is often said they appear to be playing one instrument. While Martin pursues a melody, Dennis explores the harmony and rhythms within the tunes. He seems to intuitively know Martin's next move, consistently matching it with astonishing skill and grace. Their live performances weave tunes that stretch up to thirty minutes long, in what Hayes describes as "a three-way conversation between the two of us and the music." Martin and Dennis work off each other like two jazz masters, exploring the tunes, spinning medleys that expand and contract with intensity. Their last release in 1999, Live in Seattle, captures this incredible chemistry between the two masters of Irish music.
