Hayes
and Cahill
SAT. OCT 1, 2011 Musical Instrument's Museum Phone : 480.478.6000 Sat 10/01/2011 - 7:00 p.m. An intimate evening of fiddle and guitar music with two of Ireland's most extraordinary talents. Says the Irish Echo , “There's no more impressive partnership in Irish instrumental music today than Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill.” |
This musical duo is one not to miss
by any fan of Celtic music or of stellar musicality. The musical rapport
between Hayes and Cahill is so strong that it is often said they appear
to be playing one instrument. Martin and Dennis perform what can best be described as "a conversation between the two of them and the music," intense to humorous, touching on jazz and classical, creating a cross-cultural musical experience. Martin is from from County Clare, and Dennis from Chicago with Irish parents. The duo played to three full and enthusiastic audiences. Previously,Martin won the All-Ireland Fiddle Championship 6 times and in 1999, he was namedFolk Instrumentalist of the year by BBC Radio. Since that time, they have performed many times on A Prairie Home Companion and toured worldwide. The duo collaborated with Sinead O'Connor in a special stage performance of the book If I Could Read the Sky. They recently completed the score for an award-winning documentary by Dierdre Lynch,Photos to Send, based on photographs of the people of County Clare in 1953. The L.A. Times says of the show: "A climactic display of creativity from a pair of gifted, cross-cultural artists." The Syndey (Australia) Morning Herald calls Martin "the Yehudi Menhuin of the Irish Fiddle."
Martin Hayes has been an All-Ireland fiddle champion six times over and has taken home a National Entertainment Award (an Irish Grammy so to speak). Martin plays in the slow, lyrical style of his native East County Clare. Dennis Cahill, a native of Chicago, is a master guitarist, versed as well in classical, blues, and rock as he is in traditional music. His innovative accompaniment is acknowledged as being a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. In addition to performing with Hayes, Cahill has also worked with Liz Carroll, Eileen Ivers, and Kevin Burke, as well as being a regular at Chicago's session scene, with musicians such as Lawrence Nugent, Liz Knowles, and Kieran O'Hare. www.martinhayes.com/ . |
