Michael Flatley, creator and director of this award-winning international
dance phenomenon, proved his vision that hearts and minds, united through
music and dance, cross all traditional boundaries. His Lord of the Dance
continues to shatter box office records all over the world, leaving audiences
breathless and clamoring for more. Described by the Los Angeles Times as a "show piece extravaganza," Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance is a magical adventure of sight and sound that transports its audience to a mythical time and place, lifting the spirits and capturing the hearts of all who experience it. From the moment the lights go down to the last encore, audiences are spellbound by a masterfully orchestrated combination of precision dancing, state of the art lighting and pyrotechnics. The musical score leaves no soul untouched.
As the story unfolds, the Little Spirit travels through time to help the Lord of the Dance protect his people from the challenge of Don Dorcha, the Dark Lord. As this evil dark power challenges the hero, the incredible adventure continues, drawing its audience into a mythical universe of love, danger, and desire. HISTORY OF THE PROGRAM (Wikipedia) Michael Flatley found his first fame starring in Riverdance, but he left the show in 1995 before its debut in London after a disagreement over creative control. Flatley dreamed of putting together a dance show capable of playing in arenas instead of traditional theaters. [1] He soon began thinking of rhythm patterns and steps for an a capella number. This number would later become "Planet Ireland", the show's finale. The show took 6 months to bring it from conception to the stage. Auditions were held in the SFX City Theatre in Dublin.
In March 1997, Lord of the Dance performed at the Oscars. That November, Lord of the Dance expanded operations by forming several troupes of dancers. These troupes would tour North America and Europe. Flatley signed a contract with Disney for Lord of the Dance to perform at Epcot in Walt Disney World in the summer of 1999. Lord of the Dance was asked back next summer in 2000. Troupe 4 performed at the Disneyland Paris Resort in 2002-03. There are currently four troupes of Lord of the Dance productions touring the world. |
