11. LIZ CARROLL AND JOHN DOYLE AT BERGER CENTER ON MAR 15

Georege--please list; tickets on sale now,:

Liz Carroll and John Doyle with guests Tir Conaill Irish Dancers and Highland Shamrock
Only Arizona performance
Thursday, Mar 15th 7:30pm
Berger Performing Arts Center-Tucson

All-Ireland fiddle champion at an early age (18), Liz Carroll, now living in Chicago, is easily one of the top Irish fiddlers and composers, and a very dynamic fiddler live. She last appeared on a Tucson concert stage over 10 years ago, as a guest of Mick Moloney, with Robbie O'Connell. Liz was awarded a Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts for her ongoing influence on Irish music in the U.S. Her playing and her compositions in the traditional style are also well-revered in Ireland.

Born in Dublin in 1971, John Doyle is among the most talented and innovative musicians to come out of Ireland in recent years. An extraordinary acoustic guitarist as well as an accomplished singer and songwriter, John can be heard accompanying many top Irish artists and has performed on such film and TV soundtracks as The Brothers McMullen and Out of Ireland. An original member of the acclaimed group Solas, John?s turns as a record producer have created critically successful CD?s by Heidi Talbot (Cherish the Ladies). John has two solo albums to his credit. His picking of Irish tunes, often note by note, is astounding, and he is also a fine vocalist in the Irish tradition.

The Irish Echo says of the duo: ?...a magnificent balance of virtuosity, drive, and finesse is firmly upheld. Carroll's bowing and Doyle's picking represent a kind of soloing in sync, each supporting and inspiring the other without a whiff of self-indulgence..."

Selected dancers from Tir Conaill Irish Dance Academy, one of Arizona's top dance schools, will start off the show, accompanied by their teacher, world famous accordionist Christopher McGrory. This opening set will also include fiddler and vocalist William Don Carlos; Chris and William go by the name Highland Shamrock.

Reserved seating on sale now at www.inconcertucson.com $20 advance, $23 door. $18 in advance for senior citizens and TFTM members available at outlets, Antigone Books, 411 N. 4th Ave. and CD City, 2890 N. Campbell, at Glenn. No fees to purchase tickets at outlets, discounts at outlets only.

To purchase by phone, call 1-800-595-4849, identify concert to operator. Co-sponsored by Tucson Friends of Traditional Music.

17. ARIZONA SCOTS CELEBRATE ROBERT BURNS? BIRTHDAY IN STYLE!

Tempe, Arizona ? On Sat, Jan 20th the Arizona Scottish community will celebrate Robert Burns, Scotland?s renowned bard, at the Fiesta Inn.

Who was Robert Burns? Robert Burns was the eldest of seven. He spent his youth working his father's farm, but in spite of his poverty he was extremely well read - at the insistence of his father, who employed a tutor for Robert and younger brother Gilbert. At 15 Robert was the principal worker on their farm and this prompted him to start writing in an attempt to find "some kind of counterpoise for his circumstances." It was at this tender age that Burns penned his first verse, "My Handsome Nell". Burns composed songs to the likes of James Johnston's "Scot's Musical Museum" and George Thomson's "Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs." In all, more than 400 of Burns' songs are still in existence, including one of the most recognized, Auld Lang Syne. Red, Red Rose. He died aged 37 of heart disease exacerbated by the hard manual work he undertook when he was young. His death occurred on the same day as his wife Jean gave birth to his last son, Maxwell.

On the day of his burial, more than 10,000 people came to watch and pay their respects. On the anniversary of his birth, Scots both at home and abroad celebrate Robert Burns with a supper, where they address the haggis, the ladies and whisky ~ A celebration that would undoubtedly make him proud.

Join the Caledonian Society of Arizona on Sat, Jan 20th and enjoy a traditional Robert Burns Supper. Toast the queen ~ the king ~ the haggis ~ Celebrate in style with Arizona?s Scots.

For Information:

Call the Caledonian Society of Arizona (602) 431-0095 or check the website at www.arizonascots.com. Tickets are $40 each and include dinner & entertainment.
