1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- IRISH COMMUNITY EXRESSES BEST WISHES FOR JIMMY O’CONNOR
I have permission from Jimmy’s family to let it be known that he has begun chemo this week in response to his onset of cancer. All he asks is the prayers and best wishes of his many friends. They have asked that well wishes cards be send by way of the pub at O'Connor's Pub 2601 W. Dunlap, Phoenix, AZ.
--- LEONARD RHEAUME FINISHES CHEMO SUCCESSFULLY
I was very pleased to see Len at Lis Doon Varna last Sat and the progress he is making on re-growing hair. Len came by in part to hear our special guest, Brandy Discoll. Len and Brandy used to be part of a group called “On The Dole”.

2. FEIS IN DESERT THIS WEEKEND IN CHANDLER
We are happy to invite Valley and Arizona residents to our annual 19th Annual Feis in the Desert, to be held this weekend, January 17 and 18 at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort in Historic Downtown Chandler, Arizona. Our 2009 theme, "The Irish Ties That Bind," celebrates Chandler's first Sister City - Tullamore Ireland! We extend our invitation to dancers and families North America-wide because this is a wonderful time of year in Arizona - to come in out of the snow and cold, visit relatives, and bask under our sunny skies. And so we have dancers from as far away as British Columbia, Massachusetts, New Jersey and other chilly locales. Please visit our website, www.feisinthedesert.org to view the schedule of events, our vendors, sponsors and donors – along with information on our Special Events (listed below). A fun event is the Double-Jig Competition held to benefit the Firemen's Relief Fund - to be held once each day this year. Our event will be incorporated into the City of Chandler's Multi-Cultural Festival for Saturday, January 18th - lots of extra activities! We look forward to seeing you!
2009 Feis in the Desert Duct Tape Competition
Our theme for the Feis this year is "The Irish Ties That Bind," celebrating Chandler's first Sister City, Tullamore, Ireland! So in honor of this occasion, we have chosen as our 2009 Duct Tape Competition - IRISH TIES, as in neckties! Your creation must be at least 80% duct tape, while the other 20% may be other materials. Colored duct tape certainly makes the item stand out. Check out Tullamore on the Internet - maybe get some ideas? All ties will be accepted beginning 8:00am Saturday, Jan. 17, but must be received Sunday, Jan. 18 at 10:00am, in order to be judged. Please do not enter on efeis, but bring your creation(s) and $5/tie to the Registration Table and complete the Entry Form. Judging will take place on Sunday at 11:00am; if you are not present, you and your teacher will be notified via the information on the Entry Form. This is a fun event that even non-dancer siblings of competitors and visitors to the Feis can enter!
2009 Feis in the Desert Bread-Baking Competition
Have a favorite Soda Bread recipe - maybe Grandmother O'Sullivan's yummy scone recipe? Our Bread-Baking Competition is back by popular demand - and not only at Pat King's request! Please bring your baking creations to the Feis; entries will be accepted on Saturday and until Sunday at 11:00am. We have 3 categories: Soda Bread, Scones, and Other Irish Breads. Entries for the Soda and Other Breads will have a slice taken from the center, wrapped (I am the Queen of Ziplocs), and stored safely with the Entry Form for judging on Sunday. The rest of the loaf will be sold by the slice. A single Scone will be similarly packaged, with the remainder scones for sale. So please consider bringing another loaf or two, and a basketful of scones for our Bake Sale. Please do not enter on efeis, but bring your breads and $5 Entry Fee to the Registration Table. Also, if you don't mind sharing the recipe, please type it up and we'll post on our website after the weekend. Chef's hats on?

Beoga (Irish word for ‘lively’) are a five-piece traditional band based in County Antrim, Ireland. The band was drawn together after ‘jamming’ in a ferocious session at the All-Ireland Fleadh in August 2002. Their unique sound features the twin duelling accordions of Seán Óg Graham and Damian McKee, along with four times All-Ireland bodhrán champion Eamon Murray and pianist Liam Bradley. In 2005, Beoga were nominated by Irish Music Magazine for the best traditional newcomer’s award. With the addition of one of Ireland’s premier young singers, Niamh Dunne, Beoga are confirming their reputation as one of the most exciting acts to emerge from Ireland in recent years.
The bedrock of Beoga’s music lies firmly within the Irish tradition, but they are not afraid to incorporate other genres’ nuances into their music. From bluesy riffs to Astor Piazzola-style jazz, to a raunchy New Orleans jamboree vibe, their music always returns to a wonderfully bouncy traditional sound. With a repertoire of fresh self-penned tunes and inventive arrangements, their debut album 'a lovely madness' earned 9/10 in Ireland’s Hot Press music magazine and was one of the Top Trad/Folk Albums of the year.
The group’s 2007 release Mischief’ received excellent reviews across the board, including a phenomenal 9.5/10 rating from Hot Press. The album is tipped by Irish Music Magazine and US based ‘The Celtic Connection’, among others, as a contender for 2007 album of the year. The Chicago American Times proclaims “super vocals, a terrific staccato beat to the rhythm, with a real sense of style and wit. This is a major band to be reckoned with.” The Irish Echo describes Beoga as “perhaps the most audacious band today” ranking them with Irish group Grada, as the two most promising bands launched in the new millennium.
Beoaga has played at the Boston, Kansas and Milwaukee Irish Festivals, the Guinness Irish Christmas tour of Austria, the Irish Folk Festival tour of Germany along with Solas and Kevin Burke, and the Irish Unplugged Tour of Holland with the Fureys and Davey Arthur. In September 2007, Beoga performed live with the BBC Orchestra to a television audience of millions as part of the prestigious ‘Last night of the Proms’
