------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- JAN 27 - LITTLE MISS SHAMROCK AND AZ OUTSTANDING IRISH TEEN AT ICC
------------------------------------------------------------------------

2:00 PM Little Miss Shamrock
6:00 PM Arizona Outstanding Irish Teen

Irish Cultural Center
1106 N. Central Ave.
Phoenix, AZ 85004

New Irish American Contests for Girls 6-17 Years Old . Introducing Little Miss Shamrock and Arizona Outstanding Irish Teen. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire Committee announces two new events with Little Miss Shamrock for ages 6-12, and Arizona Outstanding Irish Teen for females, ages 13-17. These programs are designed to introduce Irish American girls and their families to the Arizona Colleen Pageant Program, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2008. Two titleholders in each category, for a total of four young ladies, will play a very important role on stage during the selection night for the Arizona Colleen. A prize package will be awarded each girl.

Judging is based on her ability to introduce herself on stage and meet new people; to share about her family and being at least a wee bit Irish; her overall well-roundedness in life – school, family, and extracurricular; and poise and manners. The youngest girls will demonstrate a talent with a one to two-minute performance, while Teens will submit a short essay with finalists reading it on stage.

Both competitions are not pageants, but rather a selection process to recognize great up-and-coming communicators in the Arizona Irish Community. Participating builds self-confidence and encourages young people to learn about their Irish origins early in life. See details at www.azcolleen.org or contact info@azcolleen.org.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- FEB 9TH - 25TH ANNUAL COLLEEN PAGEANT AT ST PAUL’S
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Pageant will be held at:

St. Paul’s O’Carroll Hall

Phoenix, AZ 85023

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Colleen Pageant Story

The Colleen Pageant is a heritage pageant that started in 1983. It is open to single women of Irish ancestry ages of 18 through 26 years old. Every year in February the Arizona Colleen is chosen, and she and her court reign over the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire which follows. Along with the crown and the title “Arizona Colleen” the winner is also awarded jewelry, $1,000.00 in scholarships, and a free trip to Ireland.

The Pageant’s organizers are the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Faire Committee. The goal is to promote awareness among young people of their Irish community and culture and to get them interested and involved in the many activities and events happening in the Irish communities here in the Valley and throughout the state.

The 2007 Colleen Pageant had 9 lovely, talented and articulate young ladies who brought Irish pride to the fore as they entertained the crowd of more than 200 proud family and community members. Each contestant was sponsored by a local business or organization.

"Leahy is composed of nine extraordinarily talented brothers and sisters who have been performing their entire lives. At the center of this exceptional group is the oldest brother, Donnell who is one of the greatest fiddlers on the planet. Influenced by Celtic, country, classical, and pop music…their mom had them learning to step dance before they were ten and their father made sure they all knew how to play a multitude of instruments before the rest of us finished public school. Their recognition increased with the release of a student documentary about the family entitled “Leahy: Music Most of All.” The film won an Academy Award in 1985 for Best Foreign Student Film.

Their debut CD received a total of three Juno Awards – as Best Country Group, Best Instrumental Group and Best New Group. Leahy has become Virgin Canada’s largest selling domestic group with their CD reaching Double Platinum status in Canada. They were catapulted into an international spotlight when Shania Twain invited the group to join her worldwide tour, gaining them legions of fans that continuously rewarded the group with standing ovations, often before their set had even concluded. Leahy is a name that defines all that is good about family entertainment at its most sincere and exciting best. When it comes to delivering a never-to-be-forgotten experience, Leahy is a guarantee."

4. MEMO FROM OCEANS APART

January 2008

Blwyddyn Newydd Dda i Chi i gyd/Happy New Year to All.

The beginning of any year seems naturally to suggest change, turning the page and a time of looking forward, hopefully with optimism! Oceans Apart is in the studio at the moment, in a sense, looking back; hoping to catch the afterglow of the holidays on disc, or in other words we are recording our Christmas program, and should have it ready but next December!! Longs Peak (Estes Park) Festival has invited us back for the third time www.scotfest.com

The Arizona Scottish Gathering and Highland Games (Formerly of Mesa) has invited us to perform in February at Hance Park, Phoenix. http://www.arizonascots.com/games.html We'll also be at Camp Verdi again this year, with other festivals in the negotiation stages. That's all for now, but take a look at our new video on You Tube: "Wee Castanets", a cautionary tale of a Scots girl in Spain! Send it on to friends if you like it. www.youtube.com/OceansApartMusic

(We'll be returning to Sundays at Molly Brannigans after the Glendale Super bowl, starting February 10th. Support local musicians!!!)

7. CARA COMES TO ARIZONA IN MARCH

Cara
Friday, March 7, 8:00pm
Berger Performing Arts Center, 1200 W. Speedway at ASDB

We at In Concert! consider Cara the finest and most original band in Celtic music to emerge this decade. A five-piece band formed in 2003, they play Irish traditional with a drive few Irish bands have, plus play Breton (Celtic from Brittany, France) and original music, and very inventive and powerful vocal arrangements. Fine vocal harmonies on songs by two women, Gudrun Walther and Sandra Steinort. Other members are Claus Steinort, Juren Tayz and Rolf Wagels.

They play flute and whistles in duets, fiddle, uilleann pipes, concertina, piano, button accordion, guitars and bodhran (Irish drum). Cara is known for a witty, delightful stage presence, with all vocals in English. The band hails from Germany and is popular in Ireland, and at festivals all over Europe.

For Cara, March 7 is their Tucson premiere, and only Arizona appearance. More band info at www.cara-music.com

Championship and world qualifying level Irish dancers from the Maguire Academy of Irish Dance will dance at the show, as a fine prelude to St. Patrick’s Day activities.

All reserved seating: $20, $18 seniors and TKMA members. Tickets with seat selection available at www.inconcerttucson.com. Phone orders at 800-595-4849.

Tickets also available at Antigone Books, 411 N. 4th Avenue and at the Folk Shop, 2525 N. Campbell, hours Tues-Fri. 11-6pm, Sat 10:30-5 pm. No fee at outlets. Students with ID receive the $2 discount at outlets! Door tickets $3 more: $23 and $21.

11. PAISLEY VIOLIN LOOKING FOR PERFORMERS ON THURSDAYS

To Paul Raia,

I understand you are looking for performers for your Paisley showcase on Thursdays. What kind of stuff are you looking for? I assume this is not paid, but I need to know a bit more about your program if I am to publicize it through my network.

To George

Thanks for responding! The Paisley Violin Thursday Night sessions are something I put together back in September and have been doing every Thursday since. I ask two performers or groups each to play a 45-60 minute set. I supply the PA and mikes, cable, etc and the evening starts at 7pm and goes until 9pm. There is no pay involved, but performers play for tips, which I provide a tip jar and may sell merch at the gig.

There's usually a small crowd eating dinner at the Restaurant. They have excellent food and drinks and a nice outdoor patio. The staging area is indoors. I'm open to most genres of folk, blues, celtic, bluegrass, singer/songwriter, etc.

Let me know if you or someone you know is interested in playing...I"m currently booking for February and March.

Have a nice day!
