3 ROBERT BURNS DINNER ON JAN 30 ATCROWN
PLAZA SAN MARCOS
Chandler – On Saturday, January 30th the Arizona Scottish community will
celebrate Robert Burns, Scotland’s renowned bard, at the Crowne Plaza
San Marcos Golf Resort, 1 San Marcos Place, Chandler. The festivities begin
at 6pm with cash bar *censored*tail hour and dinner following. The Caledonian
Society invites you to join them as they celebrate 251 years of Robert Burns,
featuring a traditional observance of a time-honored Scottish event: Burns Night.

For Information:
Call the Caledonian Society of Arizona (602) 431-0095 or check the website at
www.arizonascots.com, click on Events. Tickets are $45 each and include dinner
& entertainment. Menu selections & tickets are available online.
Who was Robert Burns? Robert Burns was the eldest of seven. He spent his youth working his father's farm, but in spite of his poverty he was extremely well read - at the insistence of his father, who employed a tutor for Robert and younger brother Gilbert. At 15 Robert was the principal worker on their farm and this prompted him to start writing in an attempt to find "some kind of counterpoise for his circumstances." It was at this tender age that Burns penned his first verse, "My Handsome Nell". Burns composed songs to the likes of James Johnston's "Scot's Musical Museum" and George Thomson's "Select Collection of Original Scottish Airs." In all, more than 400 of Burns' songs are still in existence, including one of the most recognized, Auld Lang Syne.
The last years of Burns' life were devoted to penning great poetic masterpieces such as The Lea Rig, Tam O'Shanter and a Red, Red Rose. He died aged 37 of heart disease exacerbated by the hard manual work he undertook when he was young. His death occurred on the same day as his wife Jean gave birth to his last son, Maxwell.
On the day of his burial, more than 10,000 people came to watch and pay their respects. On the anniversary of his birth, Scots both at home and abroad celebrate Robert Burns with a supper, where they address the haggis, the ladies and whisky ~ A celebration that would undoubtedly make him proud.
Join the Caledonian Society of Arizona on Saturday, January 30th and enjoy
a traditional Robert Burns Supper. Toast the queen ~ the king ~ the haggis ~
Celebrate in style with Arizona’s Scots.

who has been hailed as "one of the finest singers to come out of the Scottish
Folksong Revival" and as "one of Scotland's best singing exports."

he gained graduate degrees in Folklore and Geography at the University of Texas.
Ed will be performing Friday, February 12 at 8pm at our new house, which is
located near Tucson Boulevard and Broadway. The suggested donation is $15 (all

--- SAT FEB 13 - ED MILLER PHOENIX HOUSE CONCERT
"Ed Miller is one of the best singers to emerge from the Scottish folk
revival, a guitar-wielding folkie who wins his audiences over with a sweet but
powerful voice, a great ear for material, and equal doses of populist politics
and wry humor. He learned his craft in the sessions, clubs, and festivals of
the folk revival, both in Scotland and the United States. Miller is also a scholar
with an academic degree in folklore and a deep curiosity about history and culture,
and his multiple roles and approaches to music and song make his performances
and recordings that much more rewarding." Steve Winick, contributor to
The Music Hound --The Essential Albums Guide
“Ed Miller, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland now living in Austin, Texas,
is a product of the 1960s folk revival in Scotland. He moved to the United States
in 1968 to complete his graduate work in Geography, and later Folklore, at the
University of Texas at Austin. In addition to his singing career, Ed is the
host of a folk music program on Austin's NPR station, KUT-FM.
Ed Miller is a performer who has learned his craft in musical venues on both
sides of the Atlantic.... and a folklorist who brings his love of Scotland to
every performance. Since 2000 he has led folk-music based tours to Scotland
every summer” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Miller_(Scottish_folk_musician

8. MEET DE MAIRT CEOL
Hey all,
The awarding of the latest Char and Jim Marquart scholarship reminded me that
I should correct a misunderstanding regarding the identity of the group who
plays the third Friday ceili. We’ve often been loosely referred to as
“The Fibber’s Session
Players,”
because people weren’t sure what to call us! Well, we actually do have
a formal name. We call ourselves De Mairt Ceol, which is Irish for "Tuesday
Music." The name is an homage to the craic-filled Tuesday night house session
that Char and Jim Marquardt hosted for many years.
This same group has been playing the third Friday ceili dances for over two
years and Char Marquardt was a pivotal member. She loved third Fridays! Two
years ago, after Char passed away, we formalized the name De Mairt Ceol and
established the scholarship in memory of her and Jim.
While many of us are indeed regulars at the Fibber’s session (as well
as the other sessions in the Valley), De Mairt Ceol is completely separate.
Along those same lines, while some of the De Mairt Ceol members joined Four
Peaks Irish Arts (the local Comhaltas chapter), De Mairt Ceol predates FPIA
and is not associated with Comhaltas.
What we do have in common is we are current or former ICC Academy students who
love Irish music! We play it every chance we get! It has been an honor to play
for Jim, Anne and the wonderful dancers at the third Friday ceili!
So, going forward, you now know what to call us: De Mairt Ceol!
Thanks!
Brian Harris

11. FINGAL "WOWS" ICC CROWD LAST FRIDAY
Phoenix has had a number
of outstanding bands over the past year, yet Fingal may be the best of the bunch.
They joked about being older, but it felt like a collection of "old"
masters. They were very smmoth an gave the feeling of guys who had plyed together
for decades, rather than a group whose members were from Seattle, Minnesota,
and New York. After the performance, they stayed and joined a seisiun. It was
a very pleasant evening and the response was univerally strong..
The concert had a good turnout of upwards of 120 . It's been a long time since the ICC has drawn a concert drowd of that sice. The next ICC concerts will the Dave Munnelly Band on Sun Feb 28 and Kevin Burke on April 24.
