1. OUT AND ABOUT

-----------------------------------------------------------
--- JIMMY GETS A HAIRCUT
-----------------------------------------------------------

There was a big turnout from the Irish community at O’Connor’s to watch Jimmy O’Connor to get his hair cut off in preparation for the effects of his chemo. It was a small chance for the Irish community to show just how much we care for him. There are a lot of James and Jims, but there is only one Jimmy.

-----------------------------------------------------------
--- SEISIUN NEWS
-----------------------------------------------------------

With Tim Finnegans being so close to O’Connor’s, there were a lot of people who visited both last Sun. After spending time at O’Connor’s, many musicians came over to join the Finnegan’s seisiun along with members of the Irish Foundation who came for lunch. We welcomed Sheila Maguire fresh from New York.

I haven’t heard what will happen to the Sunday’s seisiuns, but the Jan 18th Finnegan seisiun was cancelled for the game. . I’ll post an update on the AIMS website as well as any special Super Bowl parties at the pubs. In any case, GO CARDINALS.

Irish Acoustic Music Show on Sardays at Lis Doon Varna has shifted somewhat as guests have “sat in” with the Lis Doon Varan Players lately. This past Sat, we were joined by guests Jim Anderson (guitar and mandolin) and Len Rheaume on spoons.

-----------------------------------------------------------
--- MORE ON SAT PATRICK’S DAY

--- FIRST FRI IS FEB 6

Just a reminder, First Friday is February 6. Along with our seisiun musicians, Chef Frank is bringing all our favorite Irish foods, Seven layer Lasagna, Green Salad with Balsamic Vinagrette with Garlic and Bread Bailey's Cups.

February Artist Patricia Brock Thompson – Mixed Media Artist “Hmm, what shall I do with my life when I retire?” The question of the ages…perhaps in the recesses of the artist’s mind as she sat “Waiting for Santa” (solar print from photo collection of Arthur Brock c.1946) she dreamed of creating art. Born in Chicago, Patt was raised in a predominantly German neighborhood on the north side, living there from 1942 until 1970 when She moved to Phoenix, a more open and sparsely populated place to raise my daughter and son. Having attended Catholic school for twelve years she received no encouragement in art other than crayon and coloring book, the (“stay-inside-the-lines” school of art!) Patt’s limited exposure to the arts was limited to music and photography. Her father was musician and photographer, playing violin and converting their house into a photo studio. At family holiday gatherings during the 1940’s and 1950’s, Patt’s maternal grandfather Francis Patrick Aloysius Jordan, encouraged ‘sing-along’; in particular, the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Irish songs. Her professional career was in the medical community as an office manager, a medical staff secretary and as medical records administrator at a local hospital. During her employment in her husband’s solo medical practice, she met Ruth Magadini, a local artist who, while she was taking her blood pressure, asked “do you want to paint?” Patt began explaining she had not done anything ‘artful’ since grade school and she quickly admonished her , “Mine was a yes or no question!” Patt stepped out of her comfort zone and said, “yes, o.k., that might be fun.” A week later Ruth guided her to an artist’s supply store for the first time, after which she applied oil to a canvas, and never stopped discovering the various ways to express her self. . Patt has had no formal art education however avidly attends workshops throughout the valley under tutelage of printmakers, watercolorists, and other media experts. Among the many who have encouraged and inspired her, Diane Burkhardt, Linda Haas, Toni Hungerford, Sue Hunter, Carol Jenna, Marlys Kubicek, Karen Leeds, Pat Scheurich, Joan Thompson, and illustrator/artist Christopher Magadini. She considers herself a mixed media artist as she incorporates ink over watercolor, collage over prints, and colored pencil over anything. Her art education has been through local workshops and instructors, mainly at Brio Fine Arts in Scottsdale and Phoenix Center for the Arts. As Patt has often stated, “making art makes me smile” and she wishes the same for those who view her collection. Patt can be contacted at pattbrockthompson@cox.net or 602-550-4293

3. WELSH LEAGUE OF ARIZONA FEB 7 MEETING

Meeting - Sat, Feb 7TH, 2009

12 – 2 P.M.

Irish Cultural Center
1106 North Central Ave, Phoenix

Phrase of the Month
Hen Gerrig (Old Stones)
---------------------------------------------------------

MYSTERIOUS MONUMENTS – STONES FROM ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS

Pat Anderson shares with many of us a fascination with Neolithic Monuments found all over Europe and especially in Britain. However, she has delved into the subject more deeply than most people and found a unique way of documenting the works of these very early settlers by creating an embroidered map of Europe - marking locations of important Neolithic sites. She is going to share her findings with us at our February meeting.

Bonus: Start the New Year right with the 2009 Calendr Cymraeg-Saesneg Ddwyieithog - Bilingual Welsh-English Calendar .

Ashley Pritchard is a Welsh League of Arizona member and also a member of Lynn Watts’ Tucson Welsh language class. He has created this labor of love by superimposing haunting American Civil War images over images of actual letters written by the Welsh who served in that conflict. He has made this available online. It’s a must-see, handsome work by someone who typifies the creative energy and enthusiasm embodied by our Welsh League members. As we approach our 10th anniversary, we are proud to take part in reconnecting people with their roots in Wales. Thank you, Ashley!

Americymru Web Site Americymru.ning.com

Several of us in Welsh League have been enjoying a new Web Site for the past several months. Americymru is an American-Welsh friendship network. If you are Welsh, of Welsh descent, or a Cymruphile why not join Americymru. All are welcome – Croeso! There are discussion groups, groups about language, Welsh recipes, and genealogy. You will find videos, photos of Wales, and interviews with Welsh League of Arizona members, as well as many other interesting artists and musicians.

The Irish Cultural Center is on Central Avenue just south of McDowell Road and the bridge over the I-10 Freeway. It is located in Hance Park but has its own entrance and generous parking lot entered from Central Ave. The easiest way to reach it is to drive down Central south of McDowell, cross the bridge and take the first right into the driveway. The building is made of stone with a slate roof and looks like a large cottage. Here is a web link to a map to the Irish Cultural Center

For additional information, please contact the Irish Cultural Center at 602-258-0109. Many of their events are of interest to all with Celtic heritage. To receive notices of other events at the Center visit their web site at

All Are Welcome
Welsh League of Arizona is an inclusive group. If you are interested in the culture of Wales and enjoy a good time relaxing and mingling with lively people you are welcome. You do not have to be of Welsh ancestry or speak Welsh – but you might be surprised at how many are learning in Arizona.

Welsh League of Arizona is proud to be a member of the Arizona Celtic Cultural Association. This group promotes co-operation among all the Celtic groups in the state. See more at their web site: azcelts.org

8. MESSAGE FROM IRELAND

Hello George,

just letting your readers know that Strictly Cash are still around and are putting on a San Quentin 40th anniversary commemoration show next month. It's hard to believe that 40 years have passed since Johnny Cash did that famous concert at San Quentin prison. The Man in Black is more popular than ever here in Ireland, and we still sing his song, 40 Shades of Green, which he wrote in 1960.

More about us, and our show on www.strictlycash.net All the best, Strictly Cash.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: It’s a slow news period, but this is kind of interesting. Several local bands cover Johnny Cash songs and he covered some Irish stuff.]

9. RENAISSANCE FAIRES COMING

------------------------------------------------------
--- TWO RIVERS IN YUMA - JAN 30, 31 AND FEB 1
------------------------------------------------------

Dates and Times:
Friday, Jan. 30th: 10 am - 6 pm
Saturday, Jan. 31st: 10 am - 6 pm
Sunday Feb. 1st: 10 am - 5 pm

Enter a place where time stood still. Where romance, chivalry and adventure yet live. Come for the day or join us and become a part of this, our stage.

Two Rivers Renaissance Faire was born of a love for all things Renaissance. A time when chivalry was alive and well. When people were realizing art, science and exploration. The Renaissance Faire celebrates the music, food, and fun of the olde world village marketplace. Come experience life in Renaissance Europe. This will be another fun and exciting family event, unlike anything else in Yuma.

Two Rivers Renaissance Faire will again bring to life the history of the European Renaissance for the people of Southwestern Arizona. It was during the Renaissance that the age of exploration really began. Explorers left Spain, traveled halfway around the world and ended up in what would eventually become Yuma. Celebrate this time in history, remembering a simpler way of life.
