2. ART SHOW FOR FIRST FRIDAY AT THE ICC

FIRST FRIDAY ANNOUNCEMENT

Just a reminder, First Friday is February 6. Along with our seisiun musicians, Chef Frank is bringing all our favorite Irish foods, Seven layer Lasagna, Green Salad with Balsamic Vinagrette with Garlic and Bread Bailey's Cups.

February Artist Patricia Brock Thompson – Mixed Media Artist “Hmm, what shall I do with my life when I retire?” The question of the ages…perhaps in the recesses of the artist’s mind as she sat “Waiting for Santa” (solar print from photo collection of Arthur Brock c.1946) she dreamed of creating art.

Born in Chicago, Pat was raised in a predominantly German neighborhood on the north side, living there from 1942 until 1970 when She moved to Phoenix, a more open and sparsely populated place to raise my daughter and son. Having attended Catholic school for twelve years she received no encouragement in art other than crayon and coloring book, the (“stay-inside-the-lines” school of art!)

Pat’s limited exposure to the arts was limited to music and photography. Her father was musician and photographer, playing violin and converting their house into a photo studio. At family holiday gatherings during the 1940’s and 1950’s, Pat’s maternal grandfather Francis Patrick Aloysius Jordan, encouraged ‘sing-along’; in particular, the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Irish songs. Her professional career was in the medical community as an office manager, a medical staff secretary and as medical records administrator at a local hospital.

During her employment in her husband’s solo medical practice, she met Ruth Magadini, a local artist who, while she was taking her blood pressure, asked “do you want to paint?” Pat began explaining she had not done anything ‘artful’ since grade school and she quickly admonished her , “Mine was a yes or no question!” Pat stepped out of her comfort zone and said, “yes, o.k., that might be fun.” A week later Ruth guided her to an artist’s supply store for the first time, after which she applied oil to a canvas, and never stopped discovering the various ways to express her self. . Pat has had no formal art education however avidly attends workshops throughout the valley under tutelage of printmakers, watercolorists, and other media experts. Among the many who have encouraged and inspired her, Diane Burkhardt, Linda Haas, Toni Hungerford, Sue Hunter, Carol Jenna, Marlys Kubicek, Karen Leeds, Pat Scheurich, Joan Thompson, and illustrator/artist Christopher Magadini.

She considers herself a mixed media artist as she incorporates ink over watercolor, collage over prints, and colored pencil over anything. Her art education has been through local workshops and instructors, mainly at Brio Fine Arts in Scottsdale and Phoenix Center for the Arts. As Pat has often stated, “making art makes me smile” and she wishes the same for those who view her collection. Pat can be contacted at pattbrockthompson@cox.net or 602-550-4293

One of the many publications to laud the new release of Day After Tomorrow the Boston Globe says, “A half century into her career, folk icon Joan Baez is making a return of sorts – not to vintage material, but to songs that evoke the spirit and message of her defining early work…Baez has never sounded wiser, or more deeply human.”

The Americana Music Association recently honored Baez with the prestigious “Spirit of Americana” Free Speech Award at their annual Festival and Conference in Nashville. Earlier this year, Baez returned to Harvard University’s Sanders Theatre for a show to benefit Club Passim, the Harvard Square successor to the legendary Club 47. --- BEOGA CD: "THE INCIDENT" (COM 4499) $15.00
------------------------------------------------------------

The unique sound of Beoga, the five-piece traditional band based in County Antrim, features the twin dueling accordions of Seán Óg Graham and Damian McKee, along with four-time All-Ireland bodhrán champion Eamon Murray and pianist Liam Bradley along with the vocals of one of Ireland’s premier young singers, Niamh Dunne,

Beoga’s 2007 release, Mischief, made the Boston Globe’s “Best of 2007” list with their signature mix of Irish traditional music with nuances of bluesy riffs, Astor Piazzola-style jazz and a raunchy New Orleans jamboree vibe.

Beoga’s third album The Incident delivers more fresh and lively compositions from the Irish quintet. An explosive and quirky collection of melodies and songs with the Beoga stamp present from the start, The Incident is set to capitalize on the group’s popularity as they captivate audiences on a global scale with their blend of passion, energy and vitality.
