On Saturday, February 9, 2008, the Phoenix St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee will be presenting The 25th Annual Arizona Colleen Pageant at St. Paul’s O’Carroll Hall at 330 W. Coral Gables, Phoenix. There will be live music, a talent show (put on by the contestants), buffet dinner, raffle drawings, silent auction items and the excitement of seeing a young woman crowned as the 2008 Arizona Colleen.

6. MEMO FROM OCEANS APART

-------------------------------------------------------------
Oceans Apart Bulletin

February 2008

---- News ----

In Welsh, February is Mis Bach (the little month), and with the cluster of Celtic Saint's days in March (David/Dewi Sant [Cymru/wales] March 1st; Piran [Kernow/Cornwall] March 5th; Padraig/Patrick [Erin/Ireland] March 17th) March should be called Mis Mawr (the big month!). But there's a few things on the slate before we let the mad March hare out of it's cage.

I don't know if you've noticed, but at the home-grown level, there seems to be less and less traditional Celtic music in the pubs, concert halls and in some locales, even at the festivals. It's not surprising that a generation or two or three born, brought up and inundated with rock music should want to listen and party to the music that has accompanied their passage. While admitting this and that Celtic rock certainly puts bums in seats, and eases gallons of Guinness down throats, we should not forget where this whole thing started: in slate-floored kitchens with fiddles ,flutes and pipes played by uncles an aunties, while nephews and nieces polished the floor. So what's the point?

Without your active support of traditional music, both in the pubs, concerts and festivals, and by buying the occasional CD from deserving artists, I belive that the more traditional elements will be marginalized. Already, some venues have forgone the older forms of music for the electronic kind, others are considering doing the same. Don't get me wrong... there is room for both, but, right now, there is a real threat to the continued vibrancy of the tradition. We thank you for your continued support in this.

7. YOUNG AMBASSADOR

The Saint Patrick Centre in county Down, Northern Ireland, is about to launch a new cultural program which invites young people in Arizona to come to Ireland, experience the cultures of the northern part of the island and build a life long association with the people there. The Centre, which is a major tourist attraction and reconciliation site located in ‘Saint Patrick’s Country’ beside the patron saint’s grave has established a non profit support organisation called the Friends of Saint Patrick in America. Their aim is to build on the interest and links which already exists in Arizona and promote a greater understanding of the shared cultural heritage of Northern Ireland. Central to the focus of the Friends of Saint Patrick for 2008 is The Young Ambassador Program which seeks twelve prospective Young Ambassadors from throughout North America to travel to Belfast in July/August 2008 to explore various aspects of traditions particular to that part of the island of Ireland.

While there, the Young Ambassadors will develop their own cultural research projects, which could focus on traditional music, dance, Scots Irish connections, Irish language or other areas of interest. “Northern Ireland also provides a developing model for community reconciliation,” said Dr. Campbell, Director of the Centre “so political and peace studies projects will also be considered.”

n Arizona the Irish Cultural Centre Director Mary Moriarty and Councilmember Vicki Hunt of Peoria City Council will be helping to select applicants for the project. “Places are limited,” said Dr. Campbell, “but we have a special affinity with Arizona and the greater Phoenix region in particular, so we would like good representation from this area.”

Funding for the Young Ambassador Program is provided entirely by Foras na Gaeilge (an Irish language organization), the Ulster Scots Agency (representing the Scots Irish culture and traditions) and the Northern Ireland Bureau in Washington, DC.

The Young Ambassadors will be selected through an on-line application process ( www.youngambassadorprogram.com) and the deadline for applications is, appropriately, March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day.

“The aim of the Young Ambassador Program is to establish a network of informed individuals within our organization who can form a lifelong bond with Ireland and can actively represent various aspects of that culture throughout their lives,” said Kathy McGorray Dougherty, coordinator of the Minnesota Friends chapter.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: This program is not the same as the Youth Ambassador being run by the Phoenix Sister Cities Program. 602-534-3751. office.of.protocol@phoenix.gov. www.phoenixsistercities.org/templates/section-view.php?id=45.

“The purpose of Phoenix Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Exchange Program (YAEP) is to offer opportunities for Phoenix high school students to appreciate and understand the cultures of our sister cities through an abroad/home stay experience. Phoenix Sister Cities sponsors this program for Phoenix youth as an investment in the future. We all know that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.”

The selection of country is not certain with the Phoenix Sister Cities program because it seems like very student chooses Ennis, Ireland as the first choice.]

Nine Siblings in Leahy Bring Family Band to Tucson Imagine “Riverdance” on Overdrive

Imagine “Riverdance” but with dancers who also play musical instruments - expertly. Add the sound of Leahy’s step-dancing and you have a powerful percussive instrument. The band, featuring three violins, two keyboards, bass, guitar, banjo, mandolin and drums, reportedly “tore up the stage at Merlefest,” America’s largest folk music festival in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Their first CD, Leahy, released in 1996 went double-platinum in Canada and earned two Juno awards for Best New Group and Best Instrumental Group (the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy®) That album reached No.4 on the Billboard World Music Chart. Their second CD, Lakefield, named for their hometown in Ontario, was released in 1998 and took home another Juno for Best Country Group. In the US, the Twain tour and a PBS special, “Leahy in Concert,” put them on a fast track.

Their set may include a Scottish medley, an Irish jig, a ragtime piece, a bluegrass hoedown or a Hungarian-influenced Gypsy lament. Influenced by Irish, Scottish, classical, jazz, folk and more, Leahy expands the boundaries of traditional Celtic music.

12. MEMO FROM TONY NORRIS

Dear George,

It seems like it's been snowing for a month of Sundays. That's right. Every Sunday. The snow has been blowing past my window all day. Just a hundred and thirty miles south of us folks are watching the super bowl today. I can't take my eyes off the storm.

Sue is healing well from her surgery and bravely recovering from my cooking. She is cheerful and I am grouchy. I'll tell you about a couple of events that are right around the corner.

This Wednesday it's time for the Vintage Series at The Wine Loft. Several Flagstaff writers and musicians have been working on a project called SHELTER FROM THE STORM Coming Home to Flagstaff. Kate Watters and Michael Wolcott will be my guests this month as we tell our stories of how we came to the little town by the big mountain and why it feels like home. We'll be joined by some special guests as we paint an intimate portrait of Flagstaff with our songs, poems and stories.

8pm The Wine Loft, 17 N. San Francisco St., Flagstaff no cover. Read Michael's column in FLAGLIVE about SHELTER at http://www.flaglive.com/flagstafflive_story.cfm?storyID=166733 You can also see our downhome video promo on FLAGNEWS at http://flgnews.com/dates/020108/tony.htm
