--- FRI. FEB 9 - PATRICK BIXBY WAITING FOR BECKETT: A CENTENARY CELEBRATION
Friday, February 9, 2007, the Center is home to a unique celebration of Samuel Beckett's 100 th birthday. The program begins at 7:30 PM, and the cost is only $5.00.
Samuel Beckett-Nobel laureate, icon of the avant-garde, and Irishman-wasn't big on birthdays. Even after his death, there remained some question with his biographers about the precise date of the writer's entrance into the world. While Beckett acknowledged his birthday as 13 April 1906, pleased no doubt by the ironic coincidence of Friday the 13th and Good Friday, his birth certificate marks the date as 13 May 1906. Perhaps this confusion helps to explain his fascination with a lecture by Carl Jung on the subject of "the never properly born," which the young Irishman attended in the mid-thirties. He liked to think of himself that way, never properly born, so it is all the more fitting to celebrate the centenary of his birth just a bit late. Beckett is, after all, famous for making us wait.
Come celebrate the life and work of the author of Waiting for Godot with a screening of that landmark play, preceded by a brief lecture from Dr. Patrick Bixby on Beckett's oft-overlooked Irishness. Although Beckett left Ireland all-but-for-good in the 1930s, and although his career first flourished in the artistic circles of Paris , his literary imagination never strayed far from his native land. The centenary is an apt occasion to remember his insistent attention to things Irish, from the landscapes of his writing to his eccentric Hibernian characters to the particular lilt of their language.
Patrick Bixby is Assistant Professor of British Literature at ASU at the West Campus and Consultant to the Editors of The Correspondence of Samuel Beckett, a four volume collection of Beckett's letters due from Cambridge University Press beginning in 2007.

3. EXHIBIT OF WORLD-RENOWNED BRIAN P. BURNS COLLECTION OF IRISH PAINTINGS START MAR 3 AT PHOENIX ART MUSEUM
Opening Night Gala to benefit Irish Cultural Center Library Project
With an estimated 450,000 Irish and counting living in Arizona, it's suitable that the Irish Cultural Center of Phoenix's expansion plans are being celebrated by one of the largest and finest private Irish art collections in the world on exhibit beginning with a black tie preview event to be held at the Phoenix Art Museum March 2nd.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Phoenix Irish Cultural Center's library project which once built will be an 11,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility. The library will house a permanent collection of 5,000-6,000 books and materials such as paintings, poetry, music, films, newspapers, magazines, artifacts, etc. The exhibit will be open for viewing March 3rd through April 27th, 2007.
The Brian P. Burns Collection of Irish Paintings features works of mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century Irish art by Willian Orpen, Paul Henry, Jack B. Yeats, Walter Osbourne and more. Additionally, the John J. Burns Library at Boston College is loaning rare books and manuscripts to the exhibition by authors such as William Butler Yeats, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
"It's time that Ireland's contributions to the arts are more celebrated and enjoyed in Phoenix," said Norman McClelland, Shamrock Foods Company Chairman and Irish Cultural Center Library Committee Co-Chair. "The exhibit will help launch fundraising for the library which will ultimately serve as an exceptional resource to the greater Phoenix area and even the Southwest."
"Arizona is again proving to be a major player in preserving and celebrating Irish culture," said Patricia Prior, Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation President. "With this exhibit and corresponding fundraiser, the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation will make significant strides in the creation of the much anticipated library which will greatly compliment our existing programming.
The Phoenix Irish Cultural Center, a private-public partnership with the City of Phoenix, is located at 1106 N. Central Ave. in downtown Phoenix. For more information about the gala or to make a reservation please call 602.257.1750.

8. GEAR STOLEN FROM FLOGGING MOLLY IN KINGMAN
Nathen Maxwell's gear was stolen!
We need your help! Our own Nathen Maxwell was on a road trip when his car was broken into in Kingman, Arizona and some of his most prized musical equipment was stolen. We're hoping that you, our fans, can help us out by posting the information on your MySpace pages and just keeping an eye out to see if any of this gear turns up. Here is what was taken:
National Resophonic bass guitar - This is a one of a kind left handed bass that is not in production anymore. The photo of Nathen on this post shows the bass.
National bass case that also contained a Highlander IP1X Inline pre-amp and a Korg Toneworks PX3B personal effects processor.
KoAloha Koa wood Concert Ukulele
Ampeg Combo amp
As you can imagine, Nathen is very saddened by this loss, especially of the National bass guitar. If you have any information or see any of this gear around, please send a message to FloggingMolly@villamartists.com
