--- REN FAIRE ALIVE AND WELL
Every year I made the trip to the Arizona Renaissance Faire to check out the Celtic Acts. And get a feel for the program. There is a comfortable feeling of seeing old faces and meeting new people, long missing acts, and new acts. Thee have been some positive changes and the performers seem happier than in some past years.
One of the sad part of the process is that even after five hours, I missed some of the acts, though not for lack of trying. . I met an exceptional new vocalist from Texas that goes by the name “Abby Green” and a local who is here for just the second time whose stage name is Calliopea. A newly formed string quarter called “Pierides” played mostly Celtic. I didn’t catch up to fiddle player who goes by by the name Neid Fyre who is here for the first five weekends and is does some Celtic.
One curious act is called the Medieval Baebes from Britain. They have six femail vocals plus musicians. I did not get their entire story but they are pretty good. This coming weekend is their last.
Some of the returning acts I saw included Tartanic (drums and pipes). Puckerbrush Players, the Pirate Shantyman and His Bonny Lass (not much music any more), Patrice Ruane on the spinet, and Sarah Marie Mullen on the harp. In addition to stage performer Neid Fyre, some of the street performers I missed include Caitlyn DeAmbra, Wyllow Ravencroft, and Twig the Fairy.

Phoenix, Arizona – On Saturday & Sunday, February 21 & 22, 2009 the Arizona Scottish community and about 20,000 of their closest friends from the four corners of the world will gather at Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix to celebrate their culture.
The event is comprised of many things: World-class athletic competitions, Highland Dance, Re-enactment presentations, Clans, Food, Live music, Bagpipe & Drum bands from all over the globe and lots of fun for the wee lads & lassies.
Have you ever seen a big burley man in a kilt toss a telephone-pole-like caber? Did you know that the origination of pipe bands comprised of pipers, side drummers, a bass drummer and occasionally a tenor drummer occurred sometime after the battle of Waterloo in 1815? How about that right along with the ancient stories of daring warriors and master pipers you will find dance as a crucial part of celebrations and ceremonies of the Highlands?
Join the Caledonian Society of Arizona on Saturday & Sunday, February 21 & 22, 2009 and enjoy a day about Scottish Culture – Eat, sing, dance, visit the clans, learn about your own Celtic Roots and enjoy a weekend of Scottish merriment!

One of the many publications to laud the new release of Day After Tomorrow the Boston Globe says, “A half century into her career, folk icon Joan Baez is making a return of sorts – not to vintage material, but to songs that evoke the spirit and message of her defining early work…Baez has never sounded wiser, or more deeply human.”

10. NOTE FROM TONY NORRIS
Dear George ,
As I walked across Wheeler Park the other morning I saw two dogs stuck to trees and a politician with his hand in his own pocket! But don't let these sub-zero temperatures scare you. Join me, Bill Vernieu and Warren Miller next Friday, Feb 20th at 7:30 by the fireplace in the Zane Grey Ballroom as we present the 15th Cowboy Campfire.
In the old days local cowboys would tie their horses out back on a Saturday night and rent a room at The Weatherford. Then they would proceed uptairs to the ball room to celebrate - with a neat shot of rye or a glass of foam by the crackling fireplace. Soon they would be singing the sad songs of lost dawgs and the brown eyed beauties of Oldtown. A crowd would press in as one cowboy sang about his family back home. One would recite a fragment of a remembered poem while another stretched the truth till it snapped like a wire fence in a stampede.
It's a cowboy campfire. To be precise it's the 15th Annual Cowboy Campfire: Three Tenors on Horseback
Meet the Tenors:
Bill Vernieu's versatility on mandolin and guitar, his encyclopedic knowledge of cowboy songs and boyish good looks charm all comers. He’ll make grandpa cry when he recites The Buckskin Mare and last year, Aunt Pearl dropped her false teeth when he told about his first time shopping for a bra.
Warren Miller returns to the campfire with a great collection of new songs and poems. He was one of the fellers that started it all as a founder of the National Cowboy Gathering in Elko, Nevada 25 years ago. He was the director of the Arizona Cowboy Poetry Gathering for 20 years. He is recognized across the country as an authority on the folklore of the cowboy. An excellent musician, singer and reciter of the old poems, he’ll warm your heart.
Tony Norris is a veteran of the cowboy music and poetry festivals. His rich tenor voice, big Martin guitar and savvy singing of Western songs and his wry, funny stories of the Southwest will delight the whole family.
Seating at The Zane Grey Ballroom is limited so don’t delay getting your tickets-- available at The Weatherford Hotel, 23 N Leroux, 928-779-1919 or by calling Tony at 928-526-6684 or Bill at 928-525-3001. Tickets are $12 children and FFOTM members, $15 general admission.
Hope to see you there,
Tony Norris

Band member bios:
Alan Doherty (flutes/whistles/vocals) is widely recognized as a lead soloist on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. His freewheeling, "soaring flute playing" is a major part of Gráda's sound.
Nicola Joyce (vocals/bodhrán/fiddle/whistles) comes from a long family line of musicians. She grew up in Galway, in the west of Ireland and learned to play instruments and sing from a young age. Before joining Gráda, she studied music in Limerick and began performing extensively around Ireland at sessions and concerts. Her influences are numerous, but include singers such as - Dolores Keane (her long time neighbour!); Karen Casey; Tom Waits; Ella Fitzgerald; and Joni Mitchell.
Gerry Paul (guitar/bouzouki) has spent half his life living in New Zealand. Dubliners regard his anitopdean rhythm section pairing with fellow Kiwi Andrew Laking as the "engine room" behind Gráda.
Andrew Laking (double bass/vocals/guitar) was born in New Zealand and comes from a varied musical background, including jazz, Latin, folk and gypsy styles. He has been in big demand as a session musician, having recorded for producers such as Bill Whelan (composer of Riverdance).
David Doocey is rapidly becoming known as one of Ireland's finest instrumentalists, having won numerous awards on both fiddle and concertina. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and moved back to Ireland with his family in 1998 where he now resides in Mayo. He performed with many top Irish and American musicians, before joining Gráda in 2008.
