ALTAN COMES TO PHOENIX ON MARCH 3
Arizona Irish Music Society
www.azirishmusic.com
George L. O'Brien
Altan has achieved renown as one of the very best traditional Irish groups in the world. They are really special.
FORMED: 1985 With its northern Ireland-style twin fiddling and accordion melodies accented by acoustic guitar and bouzouki, Altan has grown into one of the top traditional bands in Ireland. "The Boston Globe" called them, "one of the hottest groups in the Celtic realm these days", while, "The Wall Street Journal" referred to them as "the preeminent Irish band in the world today". "The New York Times", praised them for their "clarity and coordination of its textures".
Tickets are $26. $28 and $32.
Orpheum Theater - Doors open at 7:00 PM
MORE ON THE BLACK BROTHERS In order to help promote the Black Brothers concert, March 11th. I've launched a web site for them at http://www.azirishmusic.com/black_bros/ It includes a biography, article from Irish Music Magazine, and information about their album. Take a look.
BRINGERS GET TV EXPOSURE If you watch the Renaissance Faire segment of the Safeway TV commercials, look quick and keep an eye open for Mich Regier, Vash, Byron Miller. There is a more prominent shot of Michi with fiddle. The band claims to have been hearing about it, but have not seen it yet.
The Bringers have been doing seven performances a day at the Ren Faire as well as performing at Rula Bula last Thursday and Griffins on Saturday. They will be doing a concert at the Glendale Library on March 15th and expect to be playing at Griffins on March 17th.
MORE NEWS FROM GRIFFINS People who have not visited Griffins lately will be impressed with all the redecorating Jack and Letta have done. The walls have been painted light green with a dark green trim that has proven very popular. The outside has some really cute "faux windows" with window boxes decorated with shamrocks.
The place has proven very popular with the musicians and their seisiuns have done pretty well except last Thursday when the Bringers were at Rula Bula. This weekend will feature One Eyed Fiona.

ABOUT THE MESQUITE BEAN BAND (Editor's Note: Several weeks ago, I received a message from the Mesquite Bean Band asking to be included on our directory. Since they are based in Tuboc, I have not have not had a chance to see them. So I thought it might be helpful to AIMS subscribers if they described themselves.)
Hi George, Hope this is what you had in mind? Best, Jennifer
The Mesquite Bean Band Tubac, Arizona
We're a local group of musicians in Southern Arizona in the area of
Tubac... who got started playing together out of friendship and love of
music.
Roy Simpson, the lead guitar & vocalist, has traveled extensively, and
is the local contact person for the Findhorn Community in Scotland. He
has Irish/Scots roots. He also leads circle dances from Findhorn.
Danny Horton, our Jack of all trades: Flute, penneywhistle, mandolin &
blues harmonica visited Ireland in his college days and fell in love
with the music. He is also a veterinerian, so he keeps all the band
members cats in good health.
Jennifer Oberg-Sordyl the fiddle & vocal part of the show, grew up in a
musical family of 9 kids. She loves the jigs & reels and feels it
expresses the Irish roots on her mothers side of the family. By day she
is a violin/fiddle teacher with 75 students from ages 3 to 63.
Bob Nible our bassist extra-ordinaire is retired, and has been playing
all his life. You often see him at the local Old Time Fiddlers
gatherings and he volunteers extensively with young musicians doing
contests and competitions.
We all have eclectic tastes in music, and that sometimes shows up in our
performances, which are about 60% Celtic music: Jigs, reels, ballads...
But balanced out with a little Bob Dylan & Jerry Garcia, some
American-Old Timey Bluegrass, as well as some down & dirty blues
playing.
