1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- TO FRIENDS OF LAURIE RILEY

Dear music friends,
I am a friend of Laurie Riley. I am sending this e-mail to you in the hope that you will pass it on to others who know Laurie, who is a long-time professional folk music performer and organizer. She has been battling major health issues and has recently been diagnosed with anaplasmosis and bartonellosis, acute chronic diseases similar to Lyme disease, requiring extended or lifelong treatment.

She is currently disabled, and her health insurance company pays only a small fraction of her medical bills. Therefore, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in Sedona called Cornucopia Community Advocates is collecting tax deductible donations for her.

Tax-deductible donations may be sent to Cornucopia Community Advocates at 95 Spotted Fawn Court, Sedona AZ 86351. Checks should be made to "CORNUCOPIA" and should be designated "Healthcare – Laurie Riley".

A donation receipt will be sent to you by Cornucopia for tax purposes. (Please do NOT send your donations to Laurie directly, as they are only tax deductible when they go through the organization.) Cornucopia's Tax I.D. is # 86-0990310.

Many thanks,
Rebecca Heller

Not only that, but singer, Shauna Mullin is truly one of the most gifted traditional singers we have heard. 11. MEMO FROM CHRISTOPHER DEAN

Christopher Dean in Concert ...Irish, Scottish, English, and American traditional and contemporary folk music performed on 6 & 12 string guitars, mixed with Celtic and American folk lore, history, stories, and humor.

"...I fell in love with the woody resonance and bell-like sustain of Christopher Dean's Taylor guitar and with the delicious picking style that he is rightly known for. The tunes and songs he plays are evocative of the Irish and Scots landscapes. The playing is emotional and reflective without being maudlin or sentimental. The melodies lift the spirit and weave a magic that sustains long after the last notes fade."
- Jools Thatcher, DuggUp/Saturday Soundings, Melbourne, Australia

"...many guitarists seem to concentrate on playing the instrument rather than the music. The music of Dean is exactly the opposite of this position. Very rarely have we heard a more sensitive and expressive guitarist who communicates through his Taylor guitar."

13. ARIZONA TOUR BY FIDDLER DONNA HEBERT

Hi,
I'm sending this email to my music friends to spread the word about a rare opportunity to hear and learn from a noteworthy fiddler, Donna H bert. Donna teaches fiddling at Amherst College in Massachusetts, and is an expert on French-Canadian and Franco-American fiddling. In the 1970s I learned some tunes in this style from master New Brunswick fiddler Clarence Langen, and I find the style to be really delightful. Donna's repertoire includes crooked tunes (l airs tordus), cross/open tunings, seated foot-tapping (taper du peids), turlutter (lilting the tune with the voice) - fun to play and great to listen to.

Over the past few months I have worked to create opportunities for her to perform and teach in this area as part of her southwest tour. I hope there will be a strong turnout from the local music community to take advantage of what she has to offer. Donna is the author/publisher of "Fiddling Demystified for Strings", a teacher-training curriculum for fiddling. Fiddling wizard Darol Anger in his foreword to Fiddling Demystified says, "Donna gets it all right!"

Check out her websites; they have a ton of information about her music:
www.dhebert.com & www.fiddlingdemystified.com

Donna will be traveling with Groovemama, her trio consisting of Donna, guitarist Max Cohen and fiddler Jane Rothfield. At the end of February she will be a clinician at the American String Teacher Association national convention in Albuquerque. Following that, she will give a workshop for teachers and fiddlers at ASU on March 6. This will be the perfect opportunity for teachers and fiddlers to interact with her in an up-close setting. On March 7, Groovemama will give a concert at Fiddler's Dream, and on March 8, Groovemama will perform for the contradance sponsored by the Phoenix Friends of Traditional Music. Three great ways to experience this fiddle phenomenon. Here are the details:

WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS AND FIDDLERS
Thursday, March 6, from 7pm - 9pm at Arizona State University, Gammage Room 311. Admission: adults, $15; students & seniors, $7.50 (free to ASU students and faculty) More info: Marg Schmidt, marg.schmidt@asu.edu, 480-965-8277 or Peter Rolland, peterrolland@cox.net, 480-969-9744

CONCERT AT FIDDLER'S DREAM COFFEE HOUSE
Groovemama with Donna H bert, Jane Rothfield & Max Cohen Friday, March 7 starting at 8pm * Admission: adults, $10; children 12 & under $5
1702 East Glendale Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85020; Phone: (602) 997-9795

CONTRADANCING WITH LIVE MUSIC BY DONNA H BERT & GROOVEMAMA Saturday March 8, at Kenilworth School, 1210 N. 5th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85003. Map at http://pfotm.org/kenilworthmap.html 7-7:30pm free dance lesson; 7:30-10:30pm Contra Dancing with live band: Donna H bert & Groovemama & caller Tod Whittemore.

Admission Fees: $9.00 for general admission; $7.00 for Phoenix Friends Of Traditional Music Members & Students; ?$3.00 for dancers under 18. Noted New England dance caller Tod Whittemore (now residing in Tucson) will teach and call the dances. No dance experience is necessary; this is a lot of fun. Even if you've never done contradancing before, you will really enjoy it. Tunes from New England, French-Canada, and the British Isles; couples, singles, families, and dancers of all ages are welcome. Shoe policy: "Any wide-heeled, soft-soled shoes are fine. Running shoes will do.......To tell what kind of soles your shoes have, try pressing them with your thumbnail. You should be able to make a dent. If you can't, the shoes are too hard for our floor. The heels should be at least 1.5 inches in diameter and made of a non-marking material. You can check this by scraping the edge of the heel on a piece of white paper. If it leaves a black mark that can't be rubbed out, leave them at home." Websites: pfotm.org/phoenix.html & pfotm.org/dancecalendar2008.html

Sunday March 9, at First United Methodist Church, 915 E. 4th St. (between Park & Tyndall) in Tucson Afternoon music workshop, Potluck and dance; dance begins at 6:30pm; general admission $9; members $8; students $7 Contra Dancing with live band: Donna H bert & Groovemama & caller Tod Whittemore. For more info check out tftm.org/contradancing/cdancing.htm

I hope you can make it to one of Donna's fiddling events while she is in town. Let's make it happen!

Best wishes,
Peter -
