--- READER’S THEATER PERFORMS SAMUEL BECKETT ON FRIDAY

On Friday, February 23, 2006, at The Center joins Arizona Readers Theater as we end our celebration of Waiting for Beckett: A Centenary Celebration. Members will read selections from Molloy, Krapp's Last Tape, Watt , and Beckett's poetry. Admission is $5.00 and the presentation starts at 7:30 pm.

Nothing is funnier than unhappiness, I grant you that. ... Yes, yes, it's the most comical thing in the world. And we laugh, we laugh, with a will, in the beginning. But it's always the same thing. Yes, it's like the funny story we have heard too often, we still find it funny, but we don't laugh any more. Samuel Beckett, Endgame.

Of all the English-language modernists, Beckett's work represents the most sustained attack on the realist tradition. He, more than anyone else, opened up the possibility of drama and fiction that dispense with conventional plot and the unities of place and time in order to focus on essential components of the human condition. Writers like Václav Havel, John Banville, Aidan Higgins and Harold Pinter have publicly stated their indebtedness to Beckett's example, but he has had a much wider influence on experimental writing since the 1950s, from the Beat generation to the happenings of the 1960s and beyond. In an Irish context, he has exerted great influence on writers like John Banville, Derek Mahon, Thomas Kinsella.

Beckett is one of the most widely discussed and highly prized of twentieth-century authors, inspiring a critical industry to rival that which has sprung up around James Joyce. has divided critical opinion. For further information, call us at the Center (602) 258-0109.

The Cathie Ryan Band—A Celtic Trio-  The Boston Globe says, “Cathie Ryan is a thrilling traditional vocalist whose honey-pure soprano is equally at home on probing original ballads about a woman’s place in the modern world…. Her singing is simply sublime…”  Instrumentalists and backing vocalists, Greg Anderson and Sara Milonovich, compliment Ryan’s beautiful soprano voice in a concert full of music that stays true to its Celtic roots.  The performers truly share the music with the audience and will infect in them a love of Celtic music.  Ryan’s crystalline vocals and insightful songwriting has made her one of America’s foremost Irish-American musicians in the Celtic genre.

Cathie Ryan- has established herself as one of Celtic Music’s most popular and enduring singer-songwriters after a seven year run as lead singer of Cherish the Ladies.  Throughout her career, she has released four highly applauded CDs on Shanachie Records: Cathie Ryan, The Music of What Happens, Somewhere Along the Road, and her latest The Farthest Wave.  She is also featured on more than forty compilations of Celtic Music.  In 2003 Cathie was included in the famous Irish music collection, A Woman’s Heart – A Decade On placing her amongst Irish music’s finest female vocalists and songwriters. It was the first time Americans were featured in the series and she shared the honor with Allison Krauss, Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris.  Irish Magazine voted Ryan as one of the Top 100 Irish Americans, Chicago’s Irish American News named her Irish Female Vocalist of the Decade and the L.A. Times called her, “One of the leading voices in Celtic music.”

Sara Milonovich-began playing the violin at the age of six and joined the Adirondack Fiddlers just one year later at the age of seven.  She currently plays the fiddle, flute, whistles, and mandolin, as well as providing backing vocals and has been with the Cathie Ryan Band since 2003.  Milonovich has played with various classical ensembles throughout New York, including the Empire State Youth and Repertory orchestras.  In 1998, she released the CD Mrs. Ippy Fiddle, which was a nominated semi-finalist for the 1999 Grammy awards.  Over the last three years, she ha toured the US and Ireland as a member of the Celtic/bluegrass/roots band the McKrells.  Her song Cead Caloigne Sneachta (The First Snowfall), from the McKrell’s holiday album, placed sixth in the 2001 Just Plain Folks Awards for best holiday song.

Greg Anderson- is one of folk music’s most respected multi-instrumentalists.  He has been a prominent name within the New York Irish music scene for some time and has been the musical director of the Cathie Ryan Band for eight years.  He plays guitar, bouzouki, cittern, tenor guitar, bass and keyboards as well as providing backing vocals.  Throughout his career, Anderson has played with some of Irish music’s top performers including, James Keane, Tommy Sands and John Whelan.  Anderson is also in high demand as a producer and arranger for a wide array of musical genres.

Due to limited seating – get your tickets early!!  For further information or to receive a season brochure, call the ASU Kerr Cultural Center at (480) 596-2660.  Kerr’s box office is open weekdays between the hours of 10am-5pm, Saturday (October - April) 1-5pm and one hour prior to all ticketed events.  Student, senior and group rates are available for most events.  The Kerr Cultural Center, a facility of ASU Public Events, is handicapped accessible.

The intimate adobe studio is located at 6110 N. Scottsdale Rd., which is off Rose Lane, west of Scottsdale Road, directly south of the Borgata of Scottsdale.   Tickets can also be purchased at ASU Gammage and through any Ticketmaster outlet.

Partial funding for Kerr’s 2006-2007 Season of Guest Artists is provided by the Arizona Commission on the Arts appropriations from the Arizona State Legislature and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

--- KICK OFF TO SAINT PATRICK'S DAY PARTY AND CONCERT FRI, MAR 9

-------------------------------------------------------
Tucson's own Irish traditional band, Round the House, www.roundthehouse.com and Phoenix-based Oceans Apart, www.oceansapartmusic.com, are joining together for the inaugural "Kick off to Saint Patrick's Day Party". This rollicking evening will unfold at the beautifully renovated Fox Theater, 17 W. Congress, in downtown Tucson at 8 pm, Friday, March 9, 2007. The evening will feature great Celtic entertainment: songs, music and dancing guaranteed to welcome everyone into an Irish mood. The bar will be open at 7 pm with Guinness and other beverages available for purchase. Put on your shamrocks and come to the party - it will be "great craic" as they in Ireland!

The evening will open with a performance by Oceans Apart, who combine music from the oral Celtic traditions of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the American songs that evolved from these Celtic Roots. The crossover doesn't stop there, as you may also hear a show tune from the 1940's, novelty song, or American or Canadian favorites from many eras.

The festivities continue with Round the House, celebrating the March 2007 release of their third CD, "Safe Home", as they return from a tour that includes stops in Colorado and their second appearance at the North Texas Irish Festival. Round the House lifts the authentic style of traditional music right into the modern day with driving rhythms and dynamic arrangements. Along with lively jigs, reels and polkas, the band features lyrical singing in both English and Irish. They are five-time winners of the TAMMIE for best traditional/ethnic band in Tucson and their members have also received other solo awards over the years. Their new release, "Safe Home" is already receiving great pre-press reviews.

Irish dance will also be featured at the Fox on March 9th. An elite trio of championship step dancers from the Maguire Academy of Irish Dance, www.maguireacademy.com, will provide lively footwork in both soft and hard shoes throughout the evening. Special guest, Darren Maguire, Maguire Academy teacher, who also danced the lead in Riverdance for 10 years, will be making a special appearance.

For further information contact roundthehouse@att.net, Sharon Goldwasser, 298-3014 or Claire Zucker, 869-8553.

[Ticket prices and availability will be posted when we get that information.]
