The Mesa Highland games is one of the largest Celtic event in Arizona. The bands include Alex Beaton, Golden Bough, the Boatwrights, and Afan.

For the second year in a row, Erin Lanus is the first runnerup. Erin is the lead singer and fiddle player for Wood, Wind, and Wyre. She is a former member of Gaelic Thunder as both a dancer and later as a musician.

The second runner was Christy Martin. Her talent was giving an Irish blessing in English and Irish. The other finalists were Brandee Baker who gave a presentation on making scones and Irish dancer Ann Franevsky. Ann went to the world championships last year

Sandy Carroll and the rest of the volunteers did a fine job in putting on the pageant. Go to their website for more information at www.azcolleen.com.

4. MEMO FROM BRID - SCOTTSDALE CENTER ON MAR 7

Hi George,

I just wanted to pass on my sincerest thanks to everyone who came out to the Irish Cultural Center on the 15th, for the first Sunday at the Center concert. It was terrific to see so many people there, and I for one had a great time. Thanks to John & Steve of Atlantic Crossing for making me a part of it!

As most people will know, I haven't been performing since shortly before the birth of baby Maeve, but now that she is turning five months old, I'm officially back on stage, and my new CD Comings and Goings is finally available! It will shortly be available for sale on www.briddower.com (still under construction), but the easiest way to get a copy right now is to email me at brid@briddower.com.

The Brid Dower Band will be appearing on Sunday March 7th at Scottsdale Center for the Arts, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. We'll have very special guest John Good joining us for that one.

Also, coming into our 'Irish Season', we'll be appearing at the Irish Faire on Saturday March 13th, at 11:00am.

Then on Friday, April 30th, we'll be doing a show at the Wildhorse Ranch Rescue in Gilbert, from 7PM to 9PM. Wildhorse Ranch is a Rescue Ranch for horses that need homes. Contact info is:

7. MEMO FROM BILL AND PATTY CUMMINGS

Hi George,

Attention; all who are interested in hearing truly traditional, high quality Celtic music. We perform dance music from Ireland, Cape Breton, Brittany, The Shetland Islands, Wales, Asturia, and Scottish & English Ballads of the Child collection. We also play Old Time Appalachian Fiddle of Round Peak origin and Cajun dance music of the Southwestern Prairies of Louisiana. We perform mostly in Flagstaff.

We are Bill and Patti Cummings of The Cummings Celtic Duo. We are also the Collins Irish Band when we are performing at Collins Irish Pub. We consist of Bill Cummings on Fiddle, Patti Cummings on Guitar and Bodhran. We occasionally invite guest musicians to play with us when we're playing at Collins.

We travel in the summers to learn from and collect music from world class musicians. Our most regular and recent trips include visits with Clare Fiddler James Kelly of Dublin, currently living in FL, Sligo Fiddler Brian Conway of New York City, NY, and Sandy MacIntyre of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. We also learn from other greats, including Clare Fiddler Seamus Connolly, currently living in Boston, and Cape Breton musicians Buddy MacMaster, Jerry Holland, David Greenberg, and Marie MacLellan. We have learned the fiddle styles of two great American fiddlers now deceased, but recognized by the National Endowment For the Arts before they left our world - The Round Peak Style Appalachian fiddle of Tommy Jarrell, and the Zydeco musicians of Southwestern Louisiana, Canray Fontont and Bois Sec Ardoin. Many of these great musicians, have shared, and still perform their music in their communities and the world wide over They are rich in the music of their cultures and contribute their styles to other musicians who want to learn their tradition.

Bill and Patti Cummings of The Cummings Celtic Duo, are performing our music at The Campus Coffee Bean, on Sundays February 22nd, and 29th, 12:00pm to 2:00 pm - ish! We would be pleased to see folk there!

Thank you George!

Patti and Bill Cummings

8. MEMO FROM SUN VARNISH - A NEW IRISH BAND IN YUMA

There's a new band in Yuma called Sun Varnish, and we'll be playing our debut on March 11 at the Gandolfo Art Gallery at 6 pm, prior to an evening of Irish poetry.

Hanna Coy (flute, tin whistle, mandolin) Richard Robinson (guitar, hammered dulcimer) and (perhaps) Patti Taitanov (vocals, bodhran) We play a mixture of Irish dance & fiddle tunes, ballads, folks/blues, and the occasional klezmer tune.

Also, Sun Varnish is looking for at least one more musician to fill out our sound. If you play fiddle, squeezebox, mandolin, or any other melody instrument and don't already belong to six other bands, we'd love to hear from you.
