1. OUT AND ABOUT
-------------------------------------------------------
--- ARIZONA STARTING A COMHALTAS CEOLTOIRI EIREANN CHAPTER
-------------------------------------------------------
Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (translated as “A Gathering of Irish Musicians”) and is also known as CCE. CCE is the international organization for promoting Irish traditional culture. Last weekend, the North American Provisional Chairperson, Helen Gannon, came for a visit to help get a CCE chapter organized in Arizona.
At the organizing meeting, officers were elected including Mary Connor was elected Chair, Johnny Kerr as Vice Chair, and Marnie Allen as Secretary. Chris Boydson was selected to do the website, Rich Baily to do publicity, while I’ll be in charge of “Event Planning” (a position I invented since I do it all the time anyway). There will be functional directors in charge of music (Pat McCrossan), dance (Jim Daugherty), and the Gaelic language (Vicki Champion).
CCE is a membership organization, so joining the Arizona Chapter will include membership in the international CCE. http://comhaltas.ie. They have a lot of resources such as downloadable tunes, a directory of music camps, concerts, teaching materials, a list of seisiuns all over the world and their 400 chapters.

--- SEANACHIE CONCERT A REAL BLAST FROM THE PAST
-------------------------------------------------------
Back in Jan. of 2000 Steve Colby, Kenny Mulqueen, and Dennis McMorrow formed a pub/party band called Seanachie. When they split up in 2004, it marked the end of an era. But on the request of Eileen Mulqueen, they got together again on Sat. night for a “reunion” performance. It was a blast.
It went remarkably well for three guys who had not played together since the breakup and had only a couple of rehearsals. Obviously any group with Steve Colby at the lead is going to sound awfully good, but the blend was pretty impressive.
If anything, the band said had more fun than they expected. They are already planning to another performance in six month. It is something we’ll all be looking forward to.

--- FIRST FRIDAY MAR 7
-------------------------------------------------------
For the first two weeks of March, Pat Mahoney displays colorful and attractive pottery art. Every PM Mosaic Pot incorporates the fundamentals of EcoArt. Eco Art also known as Environmental Art, is an artistic movement intended to improve our relationship with the natural world. As the concern over environmental issues such as global warming, pollution, fuel economy, and hazardous waste increases, artists are responding by developing active and practical art committed to promoting a greater awareness of these issues. These ideals are represented in all PM Mosaic pieces. PM Mosaic Pots was founded by Phoenician artist Pat Mahoney, a resident of Phoenix for over twenty-two years. PM Mosaic Pots come in a broad range of versatile home and garden products merging mosaic design with the growing movement for conservationism. Inspired by the beauty of Arizona and the Pop Art movement, all PM Mosaic products add color and interest to any setting. To insure that the product is structurally sound and remains environmentally friendly, each piece over $300 can be repaired free of charge for the lifetime of the product. Your own leftover tile or broken ceramics can be incorporated into a piece to compliment your own pool or interior. Contact Pat Mahoney at (602) 380-4524 or pmmosaics@gmail.com for more information.
Our annual art showing in March is the Sister Cities International Young Artists Competition sponsored by the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission. Youth can help to extend the mission of Phoenix Sister Cities and celebrate the uniqueness of cities, towns, and communities throughout the world, earn recognition and win cash awards for their creativity and ability to interpret the theme effectively. The 2008 theme is “A Reflection of Your Community”.
They will be displayed during the month of March and awards will be given out at an awards ceremony. After being exhibited in Phoenix, the winning artwork will be entered into the Sister Cities International Young Artist Competition where they are eligible to win more prizes. For more information visit www.phoenixsistercities.org or call Phoenix Sister Cities at 602-534-7359. Chef Steven Howard is offering a traditional Irish Favorite that everyone loves and can coincide with our Lenten "abstinence from meat" tradition. The Chef will be doing a Fish n' Chips Dinner. Classic Cod dipped in a Bass Ale batter will be fried to order and served with the Chef's Seasoned Fried Potatoes and Stilton Cheese Lime Cream Cole Slaw. Malt Vinegar and Home made Tartar Sauce will be available to bring back the memories of comfort food from the old country. We’ll get started fryin' stuff up around 6:00pm and its only $10.00 per plate. One of the top five finalists from NBC’s America’s Got Talent will be performing in Flagstaff Friday, March 14, 2008 at Flagstaff High School’s Main Auditorium at 8:00pm. The group is called Celtic Spring, although sometimes they are referred to as the von Trapp family of Celtic music. And with good reason. Celtic Spring is a music and dance group comprised of six siblings and their parents. The Wood family has entertained audiences from national television to major festivals such as Milwaukee Irish Fest as well as across the nation and world.
The Wood children, Elizabeth (21), Deirdre (19), Sean (16), Patrick (14), Maire (10), and Aidan (6), were born into a family of Irish descent (their mother’s grandparents came from Ireland) and reside in Southern California when they are not touring. Each child plays the fiddle and is a championship level Irish Step dancer. The performance they bring to audiences is filled with outstanding step dancing and equally outstanding fiddling. Celtic Spring’s awe-inspiring performances feature a rich variety of music from the Celtic lands and beyond, including original compositions. There will be a great variety of dancing from the kids, as well as fiddling, each taking turns to perform, and then performing a task attempted by many, but achieved by few….fiddling and dancing simultaneously.
This talented family is a true inspiration to watch perform and will be enjoyed by people of all ages. As an educator and presenter, I would love to see more families attend events that are happening like this in our community, so I am encouraging your family to start off spring break and St. Patrick’s Day with the Wood family and Celtic Spring. To further encourage you, I am offering children’s tickets for only $5 each! Adult tickets are $25. Tickets for NACHS and FFOTM are $23 and NAU/CCC student tickets are $15. Tickets can be purchased at Cedar Music, Jitters Coffee, or by calling 928-600-1365 or emailing Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com. I hope you will be able to join me for this family show of Irish-American talent!

March 2008
The month of Celtic saints is upon us again. I'm not sure that they would unequivocally endorse all the activities to be witnessed around the world during the month, but would heartily endorse the yearly revival of the ancient hospitality and love of live; would enjoy the re-telling of the tales and histories in verse and song, and would willingly take the glass to toast the spirit of the heros, the poets, the immortals.
Oceans Apart will be close to the valley all month; come and celebrate with us.

About the 25th Silver Anniversary of the St. Patrick's Parade and Irish Faire
Our theme this year is 'Silver on the Green'
The 25th Annual Phoenix St. Patrick’s Day Parade proceeds down Third Street from Virginia to Margaret Hance Park. Spectators will be entertained by the bagpipers, marching bands, Irish step dancers, floats, dignitaries, celebrities and police, fire and military units.
The Irish Faire takes place on the west side of Margaret Hance Park, near downtown Phoenix, where the parade concludes. The Irish Faire offers something for every member of the family. The Faire features Irish music and step dancing, food, refreshments, arts and crafts, a genealogy booth, Irish merchandise vendors and of course, St. Patrick himself. A children’s area features clowns, kiddy rides, face painters, a petting zoo, pony rides, a climbing wall and more.
The Irish Cultural Center offers a replica of a traditional Irish Cottage, the Book of Kells Museum, Genealogy Research, Gift Shop, Art Walk Exhibit in the Great Hall and traditional Tea and Scones. Come join the fun and eat, sing, dance and be merry at the 25th Annual St. Patrick’s Parade and Irish Faire.

Start out the Patrick's Day season with a gala event at Tucson's FOX Theater on Wednesday March 5th. This jam packed evening of high spirited music will lead off with music by Tucson's award winning band, Round the House, followed by the sensational David Munnelly Band, and includes performances by former Riverdance lead Darren Maguire and championship dancers from the Maguire Academy.
Round the House will be sharing the stage with an absolutely fabulous band from Ireland, the David Munnelly Band. Featured on PBS, NPR, & BBC World Television - they showcase a driving Mayo-style of playing with a bit of the jazz-influenced Roaring 20's Irish American style thrown in (they even travel with a tap dancer). Button accordion wizard & leader of the overall mayhem David Munnelly performed with The Chieftains for 4 years. His multi-award winning band creates a tight, spirited sound. Not only that, but singer, Shauna Mullin is truly one of the most gifted traditional singers we have heard. We are lucky to get them in Tucson, which is why this concert is on a Wednesday - they are off to LA for the weekend. Check out their Website at http://www.davidmunnelly.com

Dublin’s Traditional Irish Cabaret is a celebration of Irish music, laughter, song and dance. Ireland’s greatest comedian, Noel V. Ginnity instantly draws audiences into fits of laughter with his eventful brand of humor, which has delighted audiences for nearly 30 years. Combined with traditional Irish ballads and dance, this will be a rollicking afternoon of good fun from the Emerald Isle.
Noel has chosen a talented group of Irish entertainers to bring a taste of Ireland to American audiences. Tenor Paul Hennessy has been sharing the stage with Noel at his Dublin show for the past twelve years and was also a member of the original three 'Irish Tenors' with whom he performed at several concerts. Soprano Emer Hartnett is a native of Cork. Her broad training and diverse talents have enabled her to work in all fields of music from opera to rock, musicals to cabaret. Paul and Emer sing old favourites such as "Danny Boy", "Galway Bay" and "I'll take you home again Kathleen" and also some modern day classics.
Dublin's Traditional Irish Cabaret is a lively blend of traditional Irish dance, ballads and tunes. The dancers thrill audiences as they twirl and tap with exuberance to the musical accompaniment of the accordion, uileann pipes, guitar and piano.
The accordion is played by All-Ireland-Champion Ailbe Grace from the beautiful Glen of Aherlow in Tipperary and the Uileann pipes are played by piper Tommy Keane from Dublin. The pianist for the show, Pat Marnane, all the way from Tipperary, is also the show's musical director.
Dublin's Traditional Irish Dancers have been hand picked by producer Stuart O'Connor. Stuart is assisted by Ciaran Keating. The show provides a wealth of entertainment for all the family, bringing a touch of nostalgia to every Irish heart.
