1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- GETTING READY FOR MAR 17
I’ve only started trying to get the scheduling information for Mar 17. Most pubs have only band listings without times, so there is a going to be a lot of phone calling. Starting late this week, I’ll have a special St. Patrick’s Day page on the website.
2. CONTRA DANCE AT ICC ON WED
Come Contra Dance with the Phoenix Friends of Old-Time Music at the Center on Wednesday, February 28th. The dance begins at 7:30 pm and ends at 10:00 pm. Admission is $7.00 per dancer. Each dance is taught and walked through prior to dancing by a caller. A live band plays music from the New England, Irish, French Canadian, and American Old-Time traditions. It is not necessary to bring a partner with you.
The callers for February 28th will be Peg Hesley & Dave Black with music by the PFOTM Open Band.
3. FIRST FRIDAY FEATURES SEAFOOD STEW
As we head into our Lenten Season, Friday's are [of course] days of abstinence from meat. So Chef Steven has created a fabulous Seafood Stew recipe just for First Friday that will warm your cockles and keep you satisfied. Shrimp, Scallops, Whitefish (and possibly other seafood – depending on market price) will be simmered with hearty potatoes and vegetables in a Smokey broth with lots of fresh herbs and cream to delight any seafood lover's palate. A simple salad, rolls and butter will accompany the Seafood Stew. You'd pay $20 - $25 for a “Bouillabaisse” style dish like this at any good restaurant in Arizona, but no other place in the World can serve the Chef's elite gourmet recipe and he's only charging $10.00 meal at our March First Friday Dinner! We get rolling right around 6:00pm. Come early, eat, drink and enjoy the Art walk! You can call Chef Steven at “Your Personal Chef” for any In-Home cooking, Delivered Family meals, Corporate Cooking needs or large Catered Events at (480) 421-CHEF or visit his website at www.ypchef.com..
4. BRIAN BURNS ART SHOW BEGINS ON SAT AT PHOENIX ART MUSEUM
Exhibit Of World-Renowned Brian P. Burns Collection Of Irish Paintings Opening Night Gala to benefit Irish Cultural Center Library Project
With an estimated 450,000 Irish and counting living in Arizona, it's suitable that the Irish Cultural Center of Phoenix's expansion plans are being celebrated by one of the largest and finest private Irish art collections in the world on exhibit beginning with a black tie preview event to be held at the Phoenix Art Museum March 2nd.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Phoenix Irish Cultural Center's library project which once built will be an 11,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility. The library will house a permanent collection of 5,000-6,000 books and materials such as paintings, poetry, music, films, newspapers, magazines, artifacts, etc. The exhibit will be open for viewing March 3rd through April 27th, 2007.
The Brian P. Burns Collection of Irish Paintings features works of mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century Irish art by Willian Orpen, Paul Henry, Jack B. Yeats, Walter Osbourne and more. Additionally, the John J. Burns Library at Boston College is loaning rare books and manuscripts to the exhibition by authors such as William Butler Yeats, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
"It's time that Ireland's contributions to the arts are more celebrated and enjoyed in Phoenix," said Norman McClelland, Shamrock Foods Company Chairman and Irish Cultural Center Library Committee Co-Chair. "The exhibit will help launch fundraising for the library which will ultimately serve as an exceptional resource to the greater Phoenix area and even the Southwest."
"Arizona is again proving to be a major player in preserving and celebrating Irish culture," said Patricia Prior, Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation President. "With this exhibit and corresponding fundraiser, the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation will make significant strides in the creation of the much anticipated library which will greatly compliment our existing programming.
The Phoenix Irish Cultural Center, a private-public partnership with the City of Phoenix, is located at 1106 N. Central Ave. in downtown Phoenix. For more information about the gala or to make a reservation please call 602.257.1750

Hi, George -
Thanks much!
11. CATHIE RYAN BAND CONCERT ON SAT., MAR 10 AT CLINE LIBRARY
On Saturday, March 10, 2007, Flagstaff audiences will have the chance to be delighted by the Cathie Ryan Band, who will be performing at the Cline Library Auditorium at 8:00pm. The concert is presented by Living Traditions Presentations and sponsored by Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society. Tickets are $20. Members of Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society, Northern Arizona Irish Foundation, Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music, NAU Faculty & Staff, and seniors receive a $2 discount. Students and Children are only $10. Tickets are available at NAU Central Ticketing, Cedar Music, Jitters Coffee, and Ticketmaster.com. For more information, contact Kari Barton at 9928-600-1365 or Kari@LivingTraditionsPresentations.com.
Many people may have already heard Cathie Ryan’s honey-pure soprano as she was the lead singer for Cherish the Ladies for eight years. She also performed in Flagstaff in 2005 with Téada’s Irish Christmas in America. Cathie Ryan has held such acclaims as the “Irish Female Vocalist of the Decade” by Irish American News and Billboard states “…her performance is striking.” Cathie Ryan is the daughter of Irish immigrants and was raised in Detroit. “She is equally at home with the lilt of Gaelic sean nos (old style) and the Motown groove of her home city…her own songs have a strength and charm rooted in the combination of these influences.” – BBC Radio 2. She performs a mix of traditional material and her own songs. Performing with Cathie are Emerald Rae and Flynn Cohen on fiddle, guitar, bouzouki and backing vocals. This should be a wonderful evening full of traditional Irish music and songs, as well as contemporary songs. Any person who enjoys beautiful music and songs that have the ability to transport one to Ireland, if only in the imagination, should come see this performance! It’s also a perfect time to gear up for St. Patrick’s Day! See you there!

Laurie Riley - Essence of the Celtic Harp
Scots of the West Valley (SWV) invites members and their guests to evening featuring Laurie Riley, renowned Celtic harpist from Sedona, Arizona.
“I didn’t know a harp could do that!” is a remark often heard at Laurie Riley’s concerts. After more than twenty five years in the concert scene, her energetic harp music is still as fresh and new as a spring breeze. Laurie’s audiences feel her music, which ranges from introspective to energetic as a visceral experience.
She has recorded twelve CD albums, including the beautiful “Flowers of Edinburgh”, authored numerous books on harp playing, made instruction videos, judges harp competitions and teaches in the US and abroad. She was the first American harpist to be invited to judge and perform for the prestigious International O’Carolan Festival in Ireland in 1997 and has toured throughout the US and Canada since 1985 bringing her special talent to thousands of people. She has appeared at over thirty Scottish and Irish events in recent years.
As Laurie states “As a musician, I am gratefully aware that I hold in my hands the experience of music as a metaphor for life, which is offered as a gift to all who gather to listen.”
SWV members and their guests are invited to greet the spring with the sounds of this special Celtic presentation.
For dinner reservations, members should contact Tom Dolan at 623-875-6891.
For more information about the Scots of the West Valley and membership contact President Barbara Denison 623- 975-9583; Membership Chairman Robert Knight 623-876-9488 or email carnousie@cox.net .
--- WEST VALLEY KIRKIN’ O’ THE TARTAN SUN MAR 11
2:30 P.M.
Desert Plains Presbyterian
The Scots of West Valley invites members of the community join them at 2:30 pm on March 11, 2007 at Desert Palms Presbyterian Church, 13459 Stardust Boulevard, Sun City West where they will celebrate the traditional “Kirkin o’ the Tartan.
The Kirkin' o' the Tartan tradition is an old Highland one. After the defeat of the Scots by the English in 1746, the wearing of the tartan and the keeping of any Highland ways or culture was forbidden in hopes this would forever subdue the rebellious Scottish spirit. However, as the Scots were fervent Christians, and canny as well, they clung to their ancient traditions by putting them underground.
The Kirkin' was an important part of this in that one Sunday a year, the populace went to church wearing a concealed piece of the tartan and, at a certain moment set aside in the service, the tartan was touched while the minister pronounced a blessing on all tartans and the Scots once more pledged their loyalty and respect for their old traditions
The first Kirkin” in the United States was held by Scottish-born Chaplain of the US Senate, Dr. Peter Marshall, who was minister of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC. The date was April 27, 1941. Since 1954, the St. Andrew's Society in Washington has sponsored the Washington event, and it has been held in Washington National Cathedral and the event is now held around the world.
During the Kirkin”, which uses some of the Scottish Church form, a display of clan tartans is presented for blessing. Swatches of individual clan tartans are offered, rededicating to God's service the family members identified by the particular tartan.
Join us for this very special event and rediscover your Scottish roots and heritage during the blessing of the tartans. The award winning Mesa Caledonian Band will perform traditional Scottish airs and will also perform after the services. Refreshments will be served at the reception following the service.
Attendees are encouraged to wear their Scottish attire or tartans as part of this ceremony. For more information on this event, contact Sylvia de Freitas at 480-483-7201.
For more information about the Scots of the West Valley and membership President Barbara Denison, 623- 975-9583 or Membership Chairman, Robert Knight at 623-876-9488. The Scots of the West Valley is a non-profit social and philanthropic organization providing fellowship for people of Scottish birth or ancestry who are interested in programs and events that focus on their Scottish heritage, culture and traditions
14. LOOKING FOR BANDS
Dear George O'Brien,
This is Michelle Hagan, Activities Coordinator at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club. It was a pleasure speaking with you yesterday about the possibility of booking some entertainment for The Club. I understand that many of the Celtic style entertainers in the area are already booked for the evening but my hope is that a group that may be playing during the day at the nearby Renaissance Festival would be available for an evening performance at The Club. We are located approx. 5 minutes away from the Renaissance Festival off of Superstition Mountain Drive.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon, as I realize that every day that passes makes it that much more difficult to locate available entertainment. Thank you so much for you assistance in this matter. You can reach me at any of the numbers below.
Please note, I am emailing you from my home email address. Could you please forward any emails to my work email below.
Sincerely,
