St. David's Day Party
Graham and Kathleen have very kindly offered their home for our March celebration of St. David's Day. We will have numerous interesting activities (a raffle conducted by Carwyn Edwards, a quiz from Graham, our own version of the Ryder Cup and more) as well as special refreshments for lunch.
Kathleen has volunteered to make her special cottage pie and salad, and we are ordering Cornish pasties from The Cornish Pasty Company. Bottled water and lemonade will be provided, and you are welcome to "bring your own bottle" (or can) for other libations. We will all chip in to cover the cost of our food.

2. MICHI RETURNS TO PHOENIX THIS WEEKEND - MAR 5-7
Hello Phoenicians! This is your ten-day warning....I'm coming back to town.
I have planned the gig weekend of all gig weekends
(an excuse to see as many friends as possible and visit my old haunts).
Hope to see you at one of the gigs below.
Smooth Violins and Crunchy Fiddly Bits guaranteed!
--- FRI - MAR. 5TH - MICHI AT THE IRISH
CULTURAL CENTER.
1106 North Central Avenue
Phoenix, AZ 85004
7pm - with the Knotty Harper Band
http://www.knottyharperband.com/
8pm - with Sarah Marie Mullen
http://www.sarahmariemullen.com/
9pm - with YOU - seisiun (aka, jam session, Irish style).
It's on the First Friday artwalk, so admission is free - but we will happily
take donations and sell our CD's.
This will be the most Celtic of the weekend's shows.
I've just finished my parts on Sarah's new album "We Brought the Summer
With Us" - for which we dove into the 1800's finding new harp-laden treasures.
Ask her how you can pre-order the album!
Chris and Shanan of The Knotty Harper band are each well-respected musicians
in the Phoenix Irish community. On top of that, they know how to entertain.
Chris is a professional clown. Shanan is the 'flute diva.' Humor and beauty
and Michi makes three.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- SAT - MAR 6TH AT FIDDLER'S DREAM
COFFEEHOUSE
1702 East Glendale Avenue
$5.00
(look for the sandwich board sign - 1 block north of Glendale Ave on the East
side of 17th Street)
8pm - with the Knotty Harper band
http://www.knottyharperband.com
9:20pm - with Joshua Safford
http://www.ravenstory.com/
The Knottys, you know by now - but we are saving our wierdest repertoire for
Saturday night. We are calling this show "A World Tribute to Irish Music"
- because we love Irish tunes, but we can't help but mess with them! Wait till
you hear the "Balkan Washerwoman," reflecting our love of the Slavic
soul. Edge-of-the-chair tempos and cross-continental mashups are closer than
they appear.
And for Act 2......
The Absinthe Minded Professors Storyteller Joshua Safford and Violinist Michi
Regier present "Fantasy and Fugues of Queen Victrola" a collection
of steampunk tales in which; we meet a most extraordinary gentleman's hunting
club, discover the rather gory prequel to the nutcracker, and journey to a future
that never was -- all accompanied by Clockwork Violin.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--- SUN. MAR 7TH -- "RHYTHM &
ROOTS" WWW.RADIOPHOENIX.ORG/
Noon - 2pm
- here's the part where you don't have to leave the house -
- Cause I'll be with the Knotty's on your mobile device -

Hosted by our friend Sule Greg Wilson. If we're good, maybe he'll even play
something with us!
http://www.radiophoenix.org/
The show is 2 hours, but we will be playing the first hour. After that, I catch
the plane back to Chicago.
Cheers, and I can't wait to see you!
as always,
your devoted fiddle-in-ist

History ~ The Phoenix St. Patrick's Day Parade began in 1983. Its purpose is
to preserve and enhance the heritage and traditions of the Irish Culture as
well as share that culture with the citizens of Arizona. This year will be the
27th Anniversary. The Parade has marching bands, Irish step dancers, bagpipers,
police and fire vehicles, government dignitaries, floats, the 2010 Arizona Irish
Colleen with her court and a whole lot more.
Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything
green and orange, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate
its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal
and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.
So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day St.
Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the
Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations.
The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception
of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a
religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional
day for offering prayers for missionaries before the serious celebration begins.
In America cities with a large Irish population like Phoenix, St. Patrick's
Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades,
"wearing the green", music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities
for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far
as to dye rivers or streams green!
