[EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a very good band and I’m glad it the late scheduling should not keep the audience down. I’m expecting a big turnout by musicians]

Thursday evening, March 5, 2009 -Beoga In Concert!

JUST ADDED - Seisuinwith the band beginning at 6pm! An Irish seisuin (session) is a gathering of musicians playing together. Beoga will be having a seisuin prior to the concert, at 6pm. Admission to the seisuin is $20, and a combined concert/seisuin ticket is just $35.

8:00pm ~ Beoga (Irish word for ‘lively’) are a five-piece traditional band based in County Antrim, Ireland. The band was drawn together after ‘jamming’ in a ferocious music session at the All-Ireland Fleadh in August 2002. Their unique sound features the twin duelling accordians of Seán Óg Graham and Damian McKee, along with four times All-Ireland bodhrán champion Eamon Murray and pianist Liam Bradley. The bedrock of Beoga’s music lies firmly within the Irish tradition, but they are not afraid to incorporate other genres’ nuances into their music. From bluesy riffs to Astor Piazzola-style jazz, to a raunchy New Orleans jamboree vibe, their music always returns to a wonderfully bouncy traditional sound.

With a repertoire of fresh self-penned tunes and inventive arrangements, the debut album 'a lovely madness' earned 9/10 in Ireland’s Hot Press music magazine and was one of the Top Trad/Folk Albums. Concert will be in the large room.Admission is $18 advance, $20 at the door; doors open at 7:30pm, music starts at 8:00pm. To reserve tickets for the concert and/or your place playing along with Beoga, please call 602-997-9795 with your contact info and we Will get back with you!

2. NOTE FROM MARTY MANNING

Hi George,

Just a quick note that we are planning the Beth & Bill morning show live broadcast at Rosie's starting at 6am March 17. Right now we are waiting for Seamus to return from Ireland to firm up a few things, but I have spoken with Jay Johnson, the GM, and he tells me that they have a few things in the works to help with the parking situation, since the former Toys R' Us next door is now in the process of becoming Chapman BMW. I'll get you more details as I can. Keep up the good work!

10. ARIZONA NATIVE TO COMPETE IN IRELAND FOR WORLD TITLE

In a historical partnership, the 26th annual Arizona Colleen Selection’s Alexis Hodel will carry her title as Arizona Rose to the 50th Annual Rose of Tralee International Festival in Ireland. County Kerry hosts a series of events each August including an elaborate parade with 60,000 attendees and culminating in two nationally televised programs with a viewing audience of 900,000.

Anthony O’Gara, Managing Director with the Festival said, “In an unprecedented move, 50 Roses from home and abroad will travel to Tralee…There will be nine Roses representing Irish Centers – Kerry, Cork, Dublin and six others chosen at the Irish Regional Final – and Roses from our long established Centers in Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Dubai and mainland Europe.”

After the Rose Tour sightseeing and promotional appearances throughout Ireland, and additional days of competition, the group will be narrowed to 32 Roses who will then appear when the selection nights are screened on Ireland’s national television on August 25 and 26, 2009.

Crowned with the dual title of 2009 Arizona Colleen and Arizona Rose, Hodel is sponsored by Heritage Partners Murphy’s Law Irish Pub in Chandler and The Bracken School of Irish Dance. Born and raised in greater Phoenix, 20-year old Alexis is pursuing her degree in Kinesiology at Arizona State University, while also working as an Irish dance instructor at The Bracken School of Irish Dance. Alexis is a four-time consecutive world qualifier in Irish dance and has competed in Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and across the United States. She plays piano and was a member of the Phoenix Girls' Choir. In high school, Alexis excelled in athletics, receiving a Varsity Letter in women’s basketball. She enjoys travel and outdoor activities. Her future goals include continuing her dance instruction with young people and becoming the lead instructor at Bracken. For her talent, Alexis narrated a video she prepared highlighting her background in music, sports, and Irish dance, and then performed hard shoe to “Breakout” by Lord of the Dance.

As Arizona Colleen, she serves as a spokesperson for the Irish Community in area events, including as Queen of the Phoenix St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire on March 14. Hodel’s first official appearance will be at the Sister City signing on February 28 between the City of Chandler and via Live Webcam with Tullamore, Ireland.

“Colleen” refers to an Irish maiden reflecting that contestants must have some Irish ancestry, be single, without children, ages 18-27, and are judged on poise, communication skills, and talent. In identifying exceptional female communicators, a short essay is also required as a tribute to the great Irish writers and poets like C.S. Lewis and W.B. Yeats. The prize package includes a 12-day trip to Ireland; $1,000 scholarship; on-camera TV coaching with local celebrities Kari Lake, FOX-10 anchor and Debby Rosenthal; guest of the Queen at the Arizona Renaissance Festival during Celtic Weekend March 15; and other gifts.

Arizona Colleen 1st Runner-Up is Katie Caufield sponsored by American Safety Shoe Co. A 26-year old graduate of Arizona State University, Katie has an MBA from the University of Phoenix where she currently serves as a Faculty Services Manager and an online instructor. The 2nd Runner-Up is Sheila Mast sponsored by Lis Doon Varna Irish Pub in Peoria. Sheila is a 25-year old two-time cancer survivor, pursuing her BA in Nursing at Grand Canyon University, to be followed by a Master's Degree in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology.

The Phoenix St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Faire Committee sponsors several events to honor Arizona girls and young women who have at least a wee bit of Irish ancestry. These are Little Miss Shamrock for ages 6-12 held in November, as well as the Arizona Colleen and Rose of Tralee Selection each February. Participating builds self-confidence and introduces families to the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix.

Mr. O’Gara said the decision to allow 50 Roses to travel to Tralee will help showcase the Festival, Kerry and Ireland to a wider national and international audience. It is a tremendous opportunity for Arizona sponsors to contribute to the not-for-profit Arizona Colleen Programs and be noticed. Alliance Beverage, Diageo – Guinness USA, and Rula Bula Irish Pub in Tempe are among the first 2009 Rose Sponsors. To make a donation, contact Ann at 602-568-3455 or ann@azcolleen.org for details.

The 2009 Rose of Tralee will receive a prize worth $40,000 to fund a year of worldwide travel that includes fares and accommodation, a generous clothes allowance and spending money. She will receive the use of a car during her reign. This is in addition to the Newbridge Silverware Tiara, Perpetual Trophy, and quality gifts from their line of jewelry. The winner represents those of Irish ancestry all over the world and participates in educational and cultural exchanges, as well as representing children’s charities. Information is available at www.roseoftralee.ie. ###
