1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- Mar 17 Schedule Up and Ready

Go to www.azirishmusic.com/sked12.htm for the latest Mar 17th schedule. I will keep updating it, but it looks to be fairly complete. Below is listed the stage schedule for the Phoenix Irish Faire at Hance Park.

One unusual part of the Irish Faire is dancing by contestants for the TV `Dancing With the Stars` program. I`m not sure if there are going to be any `stars`, but it will certainly be something you won`t see anywhere else.

2. LEARN ALL ABOUT ST. PATRICK'S COUNTRY FROM ARMAGH DOWN TOURISM GROUP
ON THUR AT ICC

On Thursday, March 8, 2007, The Irish Cultural Center located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004 will be co-hosting a reception with the City of Peoria and the NewtownArds Borough Council of County Down, Northern Ireland for Chairman Ronnie Ferguson and Chief Executive Mark Mohan of the Armagh and Down Tourism Partnership. The Ards Borough Council, as part of celebrating and expanding its Sister city work with our partners in the City of Peoria, is delighted to work with the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix to co-host an informal evening to highlight the many virtues of visiting Ards and the wider Armagh Down area of Northern Ireland. Blessed as the region is with beautiful Strangford Lough, the Mountains of Mourne, and developing as the region is some superb christian heritage trails commemorating the journey of Saint Patrick himself, we want to offer our friendship and professional advice to anyone seeking to visit or invest in our region. Internationally renowned golf, almost the same language as our American colleagues (!), an array of unspoilt beaches, beautiful baronial homes and gardens, castles, hidden villages undiscovered by mass tourism, value for money and friendliness, with a touch of Scots - American and its heritage from the 17th Century add even more to our great region. We simply ask that you meet us in Arizona so that we can help inform you more about a wonderful part of Ireland.

Reception will start at 7:30 pm with hor'dourves and cash bar. Information on the area will be available.

For further information, please call (602) 258-0109 or check www.azirish.org/newsletter

3. LIMERICK SLAM AT ICC ON WED MAR 14

Anthology, Inc., the leading literary arts organization in Phoenix, has partnered with the Irish Cultural Center to present a raucous competition where poets will present their best Limericks on the night of March 14th, 2007. Doors open at 7:00 pm Show starts at 8:00 pm. The public is invited to come and indulge in the hilariously funny poetry form we have all enjoyed since childhood.

Anthology is offering ten poets the chance to win a $100 prize in a head-to-head Limerick competition. Prizes will also be awarded for the best Nantucket limerick, funniest limerick, and other creative categories.

Wikipedia describes a limerick is a five-line poem with a strict meter, popularized by Edward Lear. The first line traditionally introduces a person and a location, and usually ends with the name of the location, though sometimes with that of the person. A true limerick is supposed to have a kind of twist to it. This may lie in the final line, or it may lie in the way the rhymes are often intentionally tortured, or in both.

The show has a $7 cover, and takes place the same week as the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Faire. One of the year's most celebrated cultural events, the Faire runs from 11:00am to 5pm on March 17, 2007 and features Irish Music, Step dancing, Bagpipers, Food & Beverages, and much more.

More information on the Limerick Slam is available at www.anthology.org/Event_Limerick.html For more on the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Faire visit: www.phxirish.org

Anthology's mission is to promote performance poetry and associated literary arts in the greater Phoenix community by providing opportunities for artists to perform their work and by making spokenword arts accessible to a diverse audience.

4. ARCHEOLOGIST CAIMIN O'BRIEN AT ICC ON MAR 31

Mr. Caimin O'Brien, an archeologist with the Irish Government (Department of Environment, Heritage, and Local Government) will speak at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 North Central Avenue in Phoenix. Mr. O'Brien is a Trinity College graduate.

In his slide presentation and lecture, Mr. O'Brien covers the family background, social status, and roles of saints, such as St. Patrick, St. Columcille of Durrow and Iona, St. Ciar n of Clonmacnoise and others. What became of the Druids` How were their symbols and teachings absorbed` Why did the rulers of a pagan Ireland give up their belief in an established religion to (rather quickly) turn to the new religion` What lead to the rise of Monastic orders and monasteries`

Mr. O'Brien has an extensive slide presentation of historical documents, landscape archeology, historic buildings, art and poetry. Images of ruined monasteries, stained glass windows, illuminated manuscripts (think Book of Kells), religious carvings and stonework are part of the explanation of the ancient process of the evolving of religion, which created the world of the round towers made so famous by the popular book, "How the Irish Saved Civilization."

Mr. O'Brien has had rave notices from his earlier appearances. You will want to get there early for a good seat. Tickets are $8.00 per person at the door.

10. MEMO FROM JAN ALEXANDER

Yes, George! I'm having sooo much fun with these two groups.

Iona is composed of five fun and talented women. We feature fiddle, harp, flute and whistle, banjo and mandolin, bodhran, and Dadgad guitars. Although I am the lead vocalist, we all sing and do harmonies. We do a mix of jigs, reels, polkas, hornpipes and ballads as well as some funny pub-type songs. We've had a lot of fun working out arrangements that start out as a beautiful slow tune on the harp and end up as a driving reel. We will be playing at the Highland Games in Camp Verde on March 31.

Iona is:
Jan Alexander- guitars, harp, lead vocals
Yvonne Holland fiddle, guitar, vocals
Pamela Craig flutes, whistle, vocals
Meg Bohrman accordian, whistles, lead vocals
Noela Elliott banjo, mandolin, bodhran, vocals

Kiss for a Fig is my newest band. I was really honored to have been invited to play in this group! Callahan Howard, the young woman with the incredible voice decided to form a band for herself. We feature Steve Elliott on fiddle, concertina and whistles; Kent Gugler on banjos and mandolins and myself on Guitars, bodhran and harp. Callahan also plays bodhran. She is the lead singer in the group (which is kind of different....and fun... for me) I sing a few songs and harmonies. We've only been practicing for a couple of months but already we have some knock out arrangements. I'm psyched! We will be playing from 6-9 at the Celtic Crossings Pub on St. Patrick's Day and again at the same place on March 31, 8-11.

Also, Crosswind will be featured at the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival in Sedona with sets at 12:30 and 1:30.. We've added a drummer Gary Simpson which has added a lot to our energy and 'dance-ability'.

Thanks so much for asking about my bands!!! And thanks for all you do to promote celtic music in Arizona! Happy St. Patrick's Day to you!

Warmly,
Jan
