1. OUT AND ABOUT
-------------------------------------------------------------------
--- AMAZINGLY BUSY
-------------------------------------------------------------------
There are over six pages of listings for this week’s calendar with things happening all over the state. Go to the http://www.azirishmusic.com/sked_MAR_17.htm for the most up to date listing of what is happening on Monday. It is being constantly updated as more information trickles in.
You may notice my name on the listing at the “Mighty Cup.” This will be my “professional debut” (just barely) as I will be performing at a poetry program.

--- BRAZEN HEADS CD RELEASE PARTY INCLUDED VIDEOS
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Brazen Heads officially released their CD “Who’s Your Paddy” Sunday evening at the Dubliner and used the opportunity to debut the videos for their songs “One Eyed Reilly” (already available on the internet-see link from our front page) and the title track “Who’s Your Paddy”. Both are absolutely hilarious.
Both videos are loaded with sight gags and are even funnier on repeated viewings as one catches more of the gags. I’ll do a more comprehensive review of the CD and videos after St Patrick’s day when I have time to make sure I’m spelling everyone’s name right.

--- PAT MC CROSSAN SHINES AT THE EMERALD BALL
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Rather than bringing in out of town bands, the Emerald Ball featured local performers with Pat McCrossan, Jane Hilton, and Johnny Kerr. This year’s program was a huge success.
The sad truth is that programs like the Emerald Ball have a reputation for being rather stuffy. Performers who are popular with one group are often bored or worse when presented to another group. It takes an extremely an versatile performer to handle this challenge. Pat was born for the job, almost literally.
Pat’s family had a successful “show band” and Pat was performing on stage from his early teens. Show bands played for dances and were a mainstay of the Irish music scene in the decades following World War II. The emphasis was not simply playing for dancing, but to entertain with humor and worked to get the audience involved. Over the years Pat has learned to play all kinds of music from Irish to rock to country to jazz to classical, but always with his own imprint.
By combining with Jane Hilton and Johnny Kerr, the show included step dancing and ceili dancing to go with Pat’s range of “other” dance music: waltzes, swing dancing (Johnny Kerr and his wife were showcased on the floor), and a variety of other styles including doing the twist. There was a little bit of something for everyone. And of course, Pat was his usual outrageous self.
One key to the program was the wide range of age groups at the event. The energy of the younger participants was infectious and helped to get everyone involved.
The fear that the Emerald Ball would be boring was happily dismissed. Pat is many things, but boring is not one them.

Biography by MacKenzie Wilson (All Music Guide) /www.allmusic.com
The Los Angeles-based post-grunge seven-piece Flogging Molly are an interesting mix of traditional Irish music and spunky punk rock. Former Fastway acoustic guitarist/frontman and Dublin native Dave King formed the band with fiddle player Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, accordion player (and former pro skateboarder) Matt Hensley, bassist Nathen Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt, and mandolinist Bob Schmidt.
Getting their start playing regularly at the L.A. bar Molly Malones, Flogging Molly eventually took their music to the road; their explosive and passionate live show was the heart of the band, after all, and the band toured relentlessly around the world throughout their career. Their rowdy folk-rock punk revival sound has been compared to the likes of other Irish bands such as the Pogues and Black 47, but the raucous septet opted for its own unique brashness that defied genre lines.
Flogging Molly released its debut, Swagger, in March 2000 on Side One Dummy and followed up two years later with Drunken Lullabies. Crafting exuberant anthems to raise up a full Guinness to, King often used personal touchstones — such as his childhood in a war-torn Ireland, his father's premature death, and an eight-year exile in the United States — for the band's compelling lyrical content. Within a Mile of Home appeared in September 2004, and the band continued to hit the road hard in support. The DVD documentary Whiskey on a Sunday was issued in July 2006; it was a candid look at Flogging Molly as both a band and seven individuals, and came with a ten-song CD of acoustic and live tracks. In early 2007, as the group geared up for a U.S. headlining run, Hensley amicably departed to spend more time with his family.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_Spring)
Celtic Spring is an Irish American dance and fiddle band from California who combine traditional Celtic music with Irish and Cape Breton step dancing. The members of Celtic Spring are all members of the Wood family, consisting of the father, Greg, on bodhrán (traditional Irish drum), the mother, Mary, on keyboards and their six children: Elizabeth (22), Deirdre (20), Seán (17), Patrick (15), Máire (12) and Aidan (7).
They appeared as finalists on NBC's variety show, America's Got Talent. In the finale of the show, Celtic Spring were in the Top 5 with the then 11-year-old solo singer and eventual winner Bianca Ryan, cloggers All That, music duo The Millers, and yodeler Taylor Ware (then also 11 years old).
Prior to appearing on America's Got Talent, Celtic Spring recently appeared on EWTN's Life on the Rock, Good Morning America, PBS, The Today Show, The Steve Harvey Show, and Nippon TV in Japan.

6. MEMO FROM SHANNON O'BOYLESKI
Hello Friends of what used to be Rick & Steve.
We have two gigs to let you know about, to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
This year, we're going as "Shannon O'Boyleski" since we added Shannon Schumann on flute and whistle, along with our guitars, Irish bouzouki, and harmonica. And, Hana Mattson is also going to lend us her lovely vocals on some trad songs from the Irish tradition.
On Friday, March 14, we're playing the third set at Fiddler's Dream (http://www.fiddlersdream.org/) at 1702 E. Glendale Ave. in Phoenix, one of our favorite places to do St. Paddy's. The first set starts at 8:00 p.m.
On Saturday, March 15, we're playing the second set at The Music Corner
(http://www.themusiccorner.org/index2.htm) a great venue for listening, relaxing, and having coffee, tea, and goodies.
We'll be dipping into the the deep well of Irish traditional tunes and songs, and we're looking forward to seeing you again!
