1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- INCREDIBLE WEEK COMING UP

Usually I summarize the week in “This Week In Irish Music”, but with more than 6 pages of listings, it is all but pointless. The web calendar will be updated all week, so watch for changes on St. Patrick’s Day at www.azirishmusic.com/sked12.htm.

--- SOME TOWNS REALLY GO IRISH IN MARCH

It is one thing for a town to have a week of Irish programs, but for one town they go further in New London, WI: “Of interest is that the town’s name is actually changed to ‘New Dublin’ every year for the week (from New London).” www.newdublin.com/schedule.htm

--- SUN MAR 25 - TWO IRISH SEISIUNS AT PHOENIX TRADITIONS (ENCANTO PARK) FOLK FESTIVAL

AIMS will have a booth at the Phoenix Traditions Folk Festival on both Sat and Sun, Mar 24 and 25. This year there will be two Irish seisiuns on Sun. At noon there will be a “tunes seisiun” while at 4:00 PM there will be a “singing seisiun”. Bring your instruments.

2. ICC NEWS

--- WED. MAR 14 - LIMERICK SLAMS AT THE CENTER

Anthology, Inc., the leading literary arts organization in Phoenix, has partnered with the Irish Cultural Center to present a raucous competition where poets will present their best Limericks on the night of March 14th, 2007. Doors open at 7:00 pm Show starts at 8:00 pm. The public is invited to come and indulge in the hilariously funny poetry form we have all enjoyed since childhood.

Anthology is offering ten poets the chance to win a $100 prize in a head-to-head Limerick competition. Prizes will also be awarded for the best Nantucket limerick, funniest limerick, and other creative categories. Wikipedia describes a limerick is a five-line poem with a strict meter, popularized by Edward Lear. The first line traditionally introduces a person and a location, and usually ends with the name of the location, though sometimes with that of the person. A true limerick is supposed to have a kind of twist to it. This may lie in the final line, or it may lie in the way the rhymes are often intentionally tortured, or in both.

The show has a $7 cover, and takes place the same week as the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Faire. One of the year's most celebrated cultural events, the Faire runs from 11:00am to 5pm on March 17, 2007 and features Irish Music, Step dancing, Bagpipers, Food & Beverages, and much more.

More information on the Limerick Slam is available at www.anthology.org/Event_Limerick.html

Anthology's mission is to promote performance poetry and associated literary arts in the greater Phoenix community by providing opportunities for artists to perform their work and by making spokenword arts accessible to a diverse audience.

--- FRI. MAR 30 - CAIMIN O'BRIEN "STORIES FROM A SACRED LANDSCAPE: FROM PAGAN COUNTRY TO CHRISTIAN IRELAND"

7:30 PM $8

Presented by the Irish American Cultural Institute www.iaci-usa.org/perception.html

Mr. O'Brien covers the family background, social status, and roles of saints, such as St. Patrick, St. Columcille of Durrow and Iona, St. Ciarán of Clonmacnoise and others. What became of the Druids? How were their symbols and teachings absorbed? Why did the rulers of a pagan Ireland give up their belief in an established religion to (rather quickly) turn to the new religion? What lead to the rise of Monastic orders and monasteries?

5. MEMO FROM THE BRAZEN HEADS

If you would be so kind to let folks know that The Brazen Heads has a last minute change in the St. Patrick's Day schedule:

Rosie's is 2-7pm (originally 2-5)
The Dubliner is 8-midnight.

Also, it is rumored that The Brazen Heads & The Brid Dower Band will be joining forces at the Dubliner for at least a few songs (probably more!) at 8pm.

A safe, hiliarious and joyous holiday to all! Remember to arrive-alive-O.

6. MEMO FROM THE CHUCKAWALLA RHYTHM KINGS

The Chuckawalla Rhythm Kings careen madly about Yuma on their St. Patrick's Day Meltdown. Their March 17 performances include Burgers & Beer/Yuma - 11A-1P, Paradise Casinos - 2P-5P and Club Cali - 7P-10P. By 10 PM, our fingers are sore, our voices hoarse and our skin smeared with green dye...like we had some weird affliction--Colerainitis, perhaps, or Donegal Disease.

Club Cali (aka the California Bakery) on Main Street is a new addition to the line up. It's a magnificent building with tall ceilings, moody recesses and an honest-to-God stage. It'll be the first time in many years our evening performance won't be crammed against a sweaty brick wall with drunks and waitresses slamming the mics into our teeth with every pass. Does that mean we might sing and play in tune? Don't get your hopes up. Have another draft.

Performance details on the web site. See our suitably stupid TV commercial, too, at chuckawallaRK.com.

7. MEMO FROM THE RAKES

Greetings and Happy St Paddys Day to all the Irish,

This is the big day for celebrating St Patrick's' conversion of the native Celts of Ireland to Christianity and the Catholic Church of which he was a bishop. Our symbol is the Celtic Cross a sacred symbol adapted from the druids of which High crosses are seen all over Irelands' and Americas' cemeterys marking the resting places of devout Irish Catholics.. A day when the green pride is seen everywhere on the streets of Phoenix and the surrounding suburbs.

The Rakes will be beginning the weekend festivities in Prescott, Fri 3/16 at Hooligans Pub on historic Whiskey Row, then back to Phx the big day for a private event and a show in Surprise, AZ @ the Brookside, then back up to Prescott to finish off the day at Hooligans show time in Prescott is 8 30-12;30

We would like to thank George O'Brien for his work and dedication in helping to spread Irish music in Arizona and providing Irish Bands with a place to promote themselves.

We musicians reap the financial rewards of Georges' hard work.

Next time you see him be sure to shake the mans' hand and thank him...... Slainte'

The Town of Fountain Hills and the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce invites you and your family to join us at the St. Patrick's Day Celebration at Fountain Park on Saturday, March 17, 2007.

The Phoenix Scottish Pipe Band, The Knockabouts, Oceans Apart and Booya will entertain the crowd from the performance pad, as their Irish music echos throughout the park. Phil's Filling Station will provide the "real" Irish food, including corned beef and cabbage and green potatoes. Kids entertainment will include bouncers for all ages, a climbing wall, a petting zoo, and Irish arts and crafts. Don't miss the Fountain Hills "Leprechaun" as he gives away his Irish goodies to all the "wee folk" in attendance.
