1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- SPECIAL PAGE FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY ON WEB SITE
There is a new page which gives the hour by hour list of who is playing where. I made this up primarily for venues looking at how might be available. It is pretty overwhelming.
--- THE CLARE VOYANTS TO OPEN FOR BARE NAKED LADIES ON ST PATRICKS DAY IN TEMPE
St. Patty's Day Throwdown: 3-11 p.m. March 17. Featuring the Barenaked Ladies, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, Howie Day, the Thrills, Blue October, the Clare Voyants and the Rising. Tempe Beach Park, Rio Salado Parkway and Ash Avenue, Tempe. $15. Ticketmaster at (480) 784-4444.
--- GOOD WEATHER FOR PARADE AND FAIRE
It looked bleak as late as 8:00 am with wind and rain, but the sky cleared and everything went forward. The crowd seemed to be pretty good with great music on both stages. I hope to have the photos up by the next weekend.
--- ICC COTTAGE DEDICATION ON SUNDAY
The Irish cottage at the Irish Cultural Center will be dedicated on Sunday beginning at 2:00 pm. There will be entertainment starting at 3:00 pm featuring the McMorrows, Pat McCrossan and Kim Feeley, Owen Keating, the Phoenix Scottish Pipe Band, and the McElligott School of Irish Dance.
In conjunction with the St. Patrick's Day Parade and Faire on Saturday, March 13, the Irish Culture Center and the Irish Cottage will be open to the public. The Irish Cottage is the newest construction at the Irish Center. It is a replica of a 19th century stone cottage located in Bunratty Folk Park in County Clare, Ireland. It will be the home for The Book of Kells, which is on loan from Sean and Janet Lee. The cottage will also serve as a library with emphasis on Irish and Celtic pioneer history in Arizona. The gift shop in the cottage will offer unique Irish and Celtic merchandise. For more info (602) 258-0109 or see www.azirish.com.

--- FLOGGING MOLLY TO PLAY THE MARQUEE THEATER ON MAR 17
Flogging Molly is a nationally renowned Celtic Punk band that will be visiting Phoenix for St. Patrick's Day. According to All Music Guide: "The Los Angeles-based post-grunge six-piece Flogging Molly is a interesting mix of traditional Irish music and spunky punk rock. Former Fastway acoustic guitarist/frontman and Dublin native Dave King formed the band with fiddle player Bridget Regan, guitarist Dennis Casey, accordion player Matt Hensley, bassist Nathen Maxwell, drummer George Schwindt, and mandolinist Bob Schmidt. Their rowdy folk-rock punk revival sound has been compared to the likes of other Irish bands such as the Pogues and Black 47, but the raucous septet opted for their own brashness. Flogging Molly released their debut Swagger in March 2000."

2. PHOENIX TRADITIONS FOLK FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND
[From Acoustic Scene E-Letter, Maxine Jewett" sfma@inficad.com]
If it's time for the Encanto Park Festival, it must be Spring again. On Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21, Encanto Park will host it's 15th Annual Phoenix Folk Traditions Music Festival. Enactor Park is at 2605 N 15th Avenue in Phoenix. It's FREE (certainly, my favorite word!) and it offers folk, blues, celtic, country, cowboy, old time, originals, bluegrass, traditional, storytellers, workshops, jam sessions, venue information and every musician friend of yours who (should that be "who" or "whom"?) you have not seen since the last Encanto Festival. Music in a beautiful park on two beautiful days with lots of good friends combines to make for a very good weekend.
Irish/Celtic performers include On the Dole, Rick and Steve, New Traditions, and Irish Song Jam, and Four Shillings Short. Four Shillings Short will run a workshop as well.
Call 602-261-8993 for more info or TTY / TDD 602-262-6713.

6. MEMO FROM MYTHOS
Hi,
I know many of you have taken part in the Full Moon Drum & Dance Circles at
Papago Park and other spots in the Valley over the years. I organized those circles
for about 12 years. During the last year and a half I have been so busy with my music
that the only circle I've organized was for the last Solstice.
A few weeks ago, a friend who danced at our circles for many years called me and said she has rented our old spot, Center Stage at Ramadas 9 & 10 for her birthday, and she is
planning on having a Drum Circle and Potluck, just like old times! And you are ALL INVITED!
So gather up your drums, rattles, shakers, blankets, chairs, food, drinks and get yourself
over to Papago Park on Friday, March 19th from 6pm (potluck) till 10:00 pm. the Park has requested no glass containers and BYOB (beer only) Everyone is Welcome Come & Dance & Drum for Spring, the Equinox (on May 20th), Geri's Birthday, and EVERYTHING
The directions:
On Galvin Parkway (between Van Buren & McDowell) Galvin Parkway is called Priest in Tempe...the Botanical Garden is just north of the Zoo Entrance...- turn right for the Phoenix ZOO, take your first left (Park Entrance) continue on the curvey road until after the long wooden fence on your right (as the road curves to the left / north) (I hope it's still there) take your first right after the fence which is a hairpin turn (don't take the normal right) and there is a small sign that says Ramadas 9 & 10 and that drive leads to the parking area for Center Stage & the Ramadas 9 & 10.
Please forward this to anyone who loves to drum and dance and/or anyone who used to be part of the Full Moon Drum & Dance Circle and say Hi to them for me!!
Love
Connie Fisher (Mythos)

8. JOHN ROBERTS - TRADITIONAL SONGS OF THE BRITISH ISLES
TUCSON
THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 7:30 PM WILDE PLAYHOUSE
135 E. Congress, Tucson
TICKETS: Advance tickets $10 ($2 discount for TFTM members, students, seniors)
Tickets available at Wilde Playhouse (135 E. Congress) and at the Folk Shop (2525 N. Campbell). Admission $2 more at the door.
INFORMATION: 293-3783, office@tftm.org, www.tftm.org
Tucson Friends of Traditional Music welcomes back JOHN ROBERTS for a concert in collaboration with one of Tucson's newest arts (and food & drink!) venues, Wilde Playhouse, downtown at 135 E. Congress St..
John Roberts sings traditional songs of the British Isles and those songs as they evolved upon transport to the U.S.. He accompanies his songs with anglo concertina (a type of small squeezebox) and banjo, as well as doing a few songs unaccompanied, and he plays the odd tune by itself, too.
Roberts's performance in Tucson will be a collaboration between TFTM and the Wilde Playhouse. Come downtown (or stay after work) for a wonderful evening of old songs that you can enjoy while sipping imported beer or ale, wine, coffee, tea, or soft drinks and munching on sweet or savory snacks (plan to have soup, salad and/or a sandwich for dinner before the show, or save room for a wine and cheese platter!).
Prepare to sing along on some fine choruses, sit back and dream through the ballads, and laugh at tongue-twisting music hall numbers from this veteran folk music performer.
Roberts will appear on Thursday, March 25, at 7:30 pm, at the Wilde Playhouse, 135 E. Congress, downtown (across from the Chicago Store). Advance tickets are $10, or $8 for TFTM members, students, and seniors, and are available at the Wilde Playhouse and the Folk Shop (2525 N. Campbell) or through TFTM. Admission will be $2 more at the door.
For more information, contact TFTM (Becky) at 293-3783 or office@tftm.org. On the web, visit www.TFTM.org and www.WildePlayhouse.com

BIOGRAPHY:
Born in Wales and raised in Kidderminster (west of Birmingham), England, Roberts got involved with the emerging folk music scene as a teen and into college, playing in a skiffle group (a sort of British jug-band fad of the late 50's and early 60's) and then delving into traditional songs of the British Isles as the folk clubs there found the value of their own roots. When he came to the States in 1969 to attend graduate school at Cornell University, he met Englishman Tony Barrand and a 35-year singing partnership was begun.
After Cornell, Roberts and Barrand moved to Marlboro College in Vermont, where their friend Margaret MacArthur (who performed here in January) introduced them to the archives of song collector Helen Hartness Flanders. Starting from this great source of Vermont and New England songs, they added song treasures from the American and Canadian branches of British folk song to their repertoire focusing on the northern songs often neglected in favor of those from southern Appalachia.
In the intervening 35 years, Roberts, on his own and in his partnership with Tony Barrand, has performed around the country, at pubs, folk clubs, festivals, coffee houses, maritime museums, and even art museums, and he has been on staff at the Augusta Heritage and Country Dance and Song Society music and dance camps. He has also collaborated since 1974 with Tony and two others in the seasonally-themed performances of song and "mumming" (ritual folk theater) as Nowell Sing We Clear. Not content with that, in the past few years he has also been performing in a trio called Ye Mariners All, which performs maritime song, and he has played for morris dancing and for English country dancing.
John Roberts has recorded over a dozen CDs with Tony Barrand and the members of Nowell Sing We Clear, as well as appearing on several other compilations. In 2003 he was featured on the first CD from Ye Mariners All. He plans to release a solo album in 2004. Oh, and he has a "day job" doing music typesetting (especially guitar and banjo tablature) for Mel Bay, Homespun Books and Tapes, and Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop.
Visit www.GoldenHindMusic.com for more information on John Roberts.
9. JUST IN TIME FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY FOR THAT SAW DOCTORS FAN IN YOUR LIFE
The first ever live Saw Doctors CD - Live in Galway will be released in March along with the first ever Saw Doctors DVD - In Concert: Live in Galway
The Irish release date for the CD/DVD is Friday March 12 - the UK release date is Monday March 15 and the USA release date is Tuesday March 16 - both the live CD and DVD will be in all good record shops on these release dates. Unfortunately, Shamtown Records had to slightly alter the original Feb release date due to some unforeseen production problems with the DVD - thankfully all these production issues have been sorted out and the test pressings of the DVD look and sound great in 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound.
Both the live CD and the DVD are compiled from a famous concert in Galway, Ireland last July during the Galway Races. The live CD is 73 minutes long with 16 tracks including N17, Share The Darkness, Clare Island, Hay Wrap, What A Day, and I Useta Lover.
The DVD will feature 80 minutes of last July's Black Box Concert in Galway as well as a new fifty-minute documentary about the Saw Doctors that was filmed last summer in Brooklyn, New York, on the beach on Clare Island and during a massive pub session in the Rustic Vaults in Tuam, Co. Galway.
Pre-ordering is now available at your local music store. Visit the band's website at www.SawDoctors.com
The Saw Doctors will not be in Phoenix during their March tour but they are performing on the following dates on the West Coast:
March 25 The Knitting Factory, Los Angeles
March 26 The Mystic Theatre w/Todd Snider, Petaluma
March 27 Bimbo's 360 Club, San Francisco
