1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- VIDEO OF PARADE AND FAIRE FROM CHANNEL 12 ON WEB
There is a two minute clip from Channel 12 at http://www.azcentral.com/video/ in the section title Arizona Republic Video on the right hand column. It includes sections of the Parade plus a short feature of dancing by Celtic Dance and music by the McMorrows.
--- RECOVERED YET?
In clearing my database, I checked and there were 111 performances listed on Mar 17 and I found some (like below) that I missed listing.
The Faire went well (unless you were trying to run it!!), and the heat was not as big a problem as feared. Compared to last year with the cold and rain, it was a great improvement, but it would be niece if we could find a happy medium.
Friday’s ceili was very well attended with the music provided by harpist Sarah Marie Mullen who will be featured this coming Friday with Michi. I helped out on the bones (at least I hope it was considered “help” and one tune. Sadly most of the music I know are vocals and no one seemed interested in dancing to “Whiskey In The Jar”.
Saturday was the debut of the Waywards featuring Jane Hilton on the fiddle, Johnny Kerr (on whistle, bodran, and accordion) and a vocalist Skye Alexander from San Francisco. They sounded great and Jane tells me that Skye will be visiting Phoenix regularly, so their band will be available for gigs.
--- SORRY WE MISSED IT
The Phoenix Bach Choir had a couple concerts last weekend at Trinity Cathedral and performed several pieces written by Michael McGlynn, founder of Anuna (of Riverdance fame) who wrote Dulaman. One of the performers was Jane Hilton.

--- FRI. MAR 23 - MICHI REGIER (FIDDLE) AND SARAH MARIE MULLEN (HARP)
MICHI: FIDDLE - MICHI REGIER - From www.michimusic.com
Early on, Michi's favorite places to play included: the Mesa Amphitheatre, Gammage Auditorium, Carnegie Hall, Koussevitsky Shed, and a cabin by the water in Sweden, Maine.
Over 17 years of training; the usual round of competitions, symphonies, and scholarships sent her to the Tanglewood Institute....but in the meantime, Michi learned to spin, weave, and busk on the streets of Renaissance festivals. The romance of reenactment kept Michi fiddling through her college years, co-founding "Knot Sisters" and later "The Bringers."
Always jamming with other bands between shows, Michi began working in the studio with groups such as "Volgemut," "Three Pints Gone," and "The Muses." She was inspired to record her own CD, Curved Space. in 2002.
A solo performer now, Michi acts as a musical ambassador, bringing stories and music back from her travels to folk at home.
In 2003, Michi made her way to Ukraine. At first, she was looking for gypsies. Not finding any, she came home with other treasures; an education in folklore and a passion for Ukraine. Michi's next project, "Tales from the Fiddle Tree," due out in November 2006, came from this adventure and was first performed in the L'viv Philharmonic.
In 2004, Michi packed up her car and drove to Mexico, where the orphans of "Casa de Elisabet" were starting to learn violin. She became such a part of the family, even bringing her mom down for Christmas, that now they return with donations whenever possible.
HARP - SARAH MARIE MULLEN - www.sarahmariemullen.com
Sarah Marie Mullen has been in love with the harp since kindergarten, and it shows! Drawn most often to the 32 or 34 string Celtic harp, Ms. Mullen has a lovely style and feel to her playing. The arrangements on this CD are quite beautiful and you can tell that a great deal of thought went into their preparation.
Although an instrumental album, The Wild Woods is meant to "evoke a story of a young knight and his fey love of a faerie princess," according to Mullen. Sometimes sprightly, other times wistful, the tracks on this CD have one thing in common no matter what the sound--they are classy through and through.
Whether it is the years of experience she has in playing the instrument or just her innate musical talent that brings such a fresh sound to her playing is hard to say. The album has a particularly refreshing arrangement of the traditional "Greensleeves" that really highlights Mullen's ability and style. Her fingers fly over the strings and you can actually feel the expressiveness come through--a tough thing for a harpist to do.
Those who love to listen to Celtic harp will be quite pleased with this CD and will love the amount of tracks it holds as well--17. Transformative and uplifting, this is a really nice group of songs and they are extremely well-played too.
--- FRI MAR 30 - ARCHEOLOGIST CAIMIN O'BRIEN SPEAKS OF ANCIENT IRISH
Friday, March 30, Mr. Caimin O'Brien, an archeologist with the Irish Government (Department of Environment, Heritage, and Local Government) will speak at the Center. Mr. O'Brien is a Trinity College graduate.
In his slide presentation and lecture, Mr. O'Brien covers the family background, social status, and roles of saints, such as St. Patrick, St. Columcille of Durrow and Iona, St. Ciarn of Clonmacnoise and others. What became of the Druids? How were their symbols and teachings absorbed? Why did the rulers of a pagan Ireland give up their belief in an established religion to (rather quickly) turn to the new religion? What lead to the rise of Monastic orders and monasteries?
Mr. O'Brien has an extensive slide presentation of historical documents, landscape archeology, historic buildings, art and poetry. Images of ruined monasteries, stained glass windows, illuminated manuscripts (think Book of Kells), religious carvings and stonework are part of the explanation of the ancient process of the evolving of religion, which created the world of the round towers made so famous by the popular book, "How the Irish Saved Civilization."
Mr. O'Brien has had rave notices from his earlier appearances. You will want to get there early for a good seat. Tickets are $8.00 per person at the door.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Sunday, April 15th, join your friends at the Irish Cultural Center,! The event will run from 1 to 5 pm, and admission will be a minimum $5 donation; all proceeds will benefit the Irish Cultural Center. Children 12 and under may attend for free. Additional parking is available on Culver St. between 3rd Ave. and Central.
Haven’t yet finished your taxes? No problem! Volunteers will be on hand to help those of us who ask the question, “Why do today what I can put off until tomorrow?”
Owe the IRS money this year? It’s payback time! Dunk the Tax Man with your eagle eye fast ball in our dunking tank!
In addition to live Irish music and dancing, there will be lots of children’s activities, so bring the whole family! Food will be available, so be sure to bring an appetite as well.
------------------------------------------------
There may be other guest performers announced in the next few weeks. As far as I can tell, this is the first time ALL the Irish born performers of the area will be featured on the same program.]

Founding members Steve Twigger, Patrick Murphy and Steve Wehmeyer officially formed Gaelic Storm in 1996 on St. Patrick’s Day, appropriately enough. They became a celebrated act in their adopted hometown of Santa Monica, Calif., where they packed O’Brien’s Irish Pub every Sunday night with their traditional, urban Celtic sound. Then came 1997, and a little film called “Titanic” and their appearance as the “steerage band”. Ten years, five albums and two national tours later, Gaelic Storm continues to routinely sell out venues worldwide.
Featured in the film, “Titanic”, Gaelic Storm tours aggressively and plays over 125 dates a year. Gaelic Storm routinely breaks attendance and merchandise sales records, pushing their popularity beyond the World music genre and into the mainstream music consciousness.
Gaelic Storm released their fifth album “How Are We Getting Home?” in August 2004 which debuted at #3 on the Billboard World Music Charts and #10 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and re-entered the September 2005 World Albums Chart at #3. Their previous four albums have all charted high on the Billboard World Music Chart, including reaching the #2 position on three different occasions. Since their self-titled first album and their appearance in the film Titanic, Gaelic Storm continues to thunder onto stages around the world attracting larger and larger crowds.

10. AN IRISH LIFE - AN IMPORTANT NEW IRISH COMMUNITY PROJECT AND HISTORICAL ARCHIVE
“Irish Diaspora” is a term commonly used to refer to Irish emigrants and their descendants, 40 million of which are in the USA. An Irish Life is a new Internet community portal, which has been designed to provide the means for all people of Irish descent to record their life experiences for posterity and to become part of an important Irish historical archive.
We are looking for stories and biographies of all Irish Americans, anybody of Irish descent regardless of how distant the connection with Ireland. The purpose of the site is to document how the lives of the people of the Irish Diaspora have developed, where the families of the people who left Ireland so long ago have settled and what their lives have been like.
This archive is to be located at www.anirishlife.comand will feature stories about the Irish people, both here in Ireland, and also from the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, indeed anywhere around the globe. The archive will feature collections of life stories, memoirs, family journals, obituaries, short biographies and tributes. All articles submitted to the site are to be stored online as a permanent Irish historical archive, accessible from anywhere in the world. This archive will be unique because the content is not written by historians, but by ordinary Irish people themselves.
www.anirishlife.com is set to become an important historical record of a worldwide community linked by a common history and a shared identity.
Your Support
We invite submissions from anyone of Irish descent to submit articles and memoirs about themselves, their families or friends. The unique material and photography collected will subsequently be published in a series of books on the Irish Diaspora.
