1. OUT AND ABOUT
--- IRISH ACOUSTIC SHOWCASE PUT ON HOLD
For the past two and half months the Irish Acoustic Showcase has featured the Lis Doon Varna Players with a series of guest players added to the band. With Jim and Voni leaving, we decided to take a break. We are expected to return after a short break.
None of this will effect the seisiun which continues each Wed from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
Steve tells me he plans to book various solo and duo acts during our absence. I’ll try to keep everyone up to date on the program on our website. I don’t expect to know by newsletter publishing time this week, but I’ll have it up on www.azirishmusic.com as soon as I get it.

2. GRADA - TUE. MAR 24 - FIDDLER'S DREAM IN PHOENIX
[EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a great band and well worth checking out. I’ve pushed up the deadline to give an extra push.]
7:00 PM $20
Fiddler's Dream
17th St. & Cactus Wren, Phoenix, AZ
800-595-4849 - www.fiddlersdream.org
Visiting Arizona is the band The Irish Times has called Irish music with “enough steam in its heels to leave most of its peers at the starting blocks.” This band is Grada. Grada is a group that is not well known in the United States, but is finally receiving the sort of recognition they deserve, having received a fat of awards and reviews that have propelled them into the elite circle of Irish super groups.
Grada is a quintet of talented musicians from Ireland, New Zealand, and England. Alan Doherty (flutes, whistles, vocals) is widely recognized as a lead soloist on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack. His freewheeling, “soaring flute playing” is a major part of Grada’s sound. Nicola Joyce (vocals, bodhran, fiddle, whistles) comes from a long family line of musicians. She grew up in Galway in the west of Ireland and learned to play instruments and sing from a young age. Her influences are numerous, but include Dolores Keane, Karen Casey (Cherish the Ladies), Tom Waits, Ella Fitzgerald, and Joni Mitchell. Colin Farrell (fiddle, whistle) was born in Manchester, a city that has probably the strongest and most vibrant Irish Traditional music seen outside of Ireland. Before joining Grada, Colin had already made a name for himself, performing and recording with an array of great musicians in Europe and the USA, including the well-known group, Flook. Gerry Paul (guitar, bouzouki) has spent half his life in New Zealand and is considered part of the “engine room” behind Grada along with Andrew Laking (double bass, vocals, guitar). Born in New Zealand, Andrew comes from a varied musical background, including jazz, Latin, gypsy, and folk styles. He has been in big demand as a session musician, having recorded for producers such as Bill Whelan (Riverdance).
Grada may not be a household name in the US yet, but they are worth seeing. Having seen them at last year’s Milwaukee Irish Fest, I was blown away by the stunning vocals, energetic tunes, and the ability to use outside influences such as jazz without losing the sound of traditional Irish music. Grada is a truly captivating band. www.gradamusic.com

7. MARQUARDT FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
[EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing post for www.azirish.org]
The Char and Jim Marquardt scholarship has been established to acknowledge their significant contribution to the Valley Irish Music community. The mission of the Char and Jim Marquardt Scholarship is to continue Char and Jim’s tradition of nurturing local Irish music by assisting qualifying students of the art and tradition.
The Char and Jim Marquardt scholarship will be awarded once per term and will pay half of the tuition for the selected students of the Phoenix Irish Cultural Center (ICC). Interested candidates may apply for the scholarship by submitting the designated application for the upcoming term. A committee, consisting of the members listed below, will review the applications and select the recipients. A scholarship will cover only the term for which it was awarded. A new application and selection process will occur before every term.
The Char and Jim Marquardt scholarship is funded by memorial contributions from members and friends of the Valley Irish Music community. The administration and committee membership is renewable every term.
The initial beneficiaries of the Char and Jim Marquardt scholarship are the students of the Music Academy of the ICC. However, the scope of this scholarship may change at the discretion of the Committee Members.
