1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- IRISH BORN PERFORMERS FEATURED AT SLAN FUNDRAISER ON APR 15

Last week I mentioned that the Irish born performers would be featured, but of course there will certainly be a lot of non-Irish born performers performing as well. It goes without saying that recognizing the contributions of the Irish born does not diminish the overwhelming importance of Irish American, Welsh, Scottish, and German performers who have all done so much to Arizona on the Celtic music map.

The program will go from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sun, Apr. 15. Program will include Brid Dower Band, Pat McCrossan, Brazen Heads (with Liam Mackey) as well as special guests Seamus King and Declan Fox.

--- FRI. MAR 30 - "STORIES FROM A SACRED LANDSCAPE: FROM PAGAN COUNTRY TO CHRISTIAN IRELAND" BY CAIMIN O'BRIEN

7:30 PM $8

Mr. Caimin O'Brien, an archeologist with the Irish Government (Department of Environment, Heritage, and Local Government) will speak at the Irish Cultural Center, 1102 North Central Avenue in Phoenix. Mr. O'Brien is a Trinity College graduate.

In his slide presentation and lecture, Mr. O'Brien covers the family background, social status, and roles of saints, such as St. Patrick, St. Columcille of Durrow and Iona, St. Ciarán of Clonmacnoise and others. What became of the Druids? How were their symbols and teachings absorbed? Why did the rulers of a pagan Ireland give up their belief in an established religion to (rather quickly) turn to the new religion? What lead to the rise of Monastic orders and monasteries?

Mr. O'Brien has an extensive slide presentation of historical documents, landscape archeology, historic buildings, art and poetry. Images of ruined monasteries, stained glass windows, illuminated manuscripts (think Book of Kells), religious carvings and stonework are part of the explanation of the ancient process of the evolving of religion, which created the world of the round towers made so famous by the popular book, "How the Irish Saved Civilization."

Mr. O'Brien has had rave notices from his earlier appearances. You will want to get there early for a good seat. Tickets are $8.00 per person at the door.
--------------------------------------------------
From Website of Irish American Cultural Institute: www.iaci-usa.org/perception.html

Caimin O’Brien, a native of Birr, Co. Offaly, works as an archaeologist with the Archaeological Survey of Ireland, which is a section of the National Monuments Service of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. He graduated from University College Galway with a degree in archaeology and later earned an M. Litt. in Medieval History at Trinity College Dublin. His publications include Stories from a Sacred Landscape: From Croghan Hill to Clonmacnoise, the Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly, The Medieval Churches of County Offaly and the Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary, North Riding.

His lecture will be based on his recent publication-Stories from a Sacred Landscape: From Crogan Hill to Clonmacnoise. In his talk he will look at the social background of the evangelizing saints who introduced Christianity to Ireland. He will look at the family background and the social status of important saints like St. Patrick, St. Columcille of Durrow and Iona, St. Ciarán of Clonmacnoise and many more. Why did Christianity gain such a stronghold in Ireland so quickly and without bloodshed or martyrdom of the saints? Why did the rulers of Pagan Ireland give up their belief system that had slowly formed over the centuries and turn to a new religion in a short time period? These and many more questions will be explored through an analysis of the historical documents, landscape archaeology, architecture, art history, poetry and the folk beliefs of Irish people. By combining these varied sources it is hoped to give a rounded and comprehensive analysis about the impact of Christianity on medieval Ireland.

This talk will be illustrated with beautiful images of early Christian Monasteries in their landscape and their magnificent illuminated manuscripts, stained glass windows depicting the early saints, and some wonderful examples of religious art through the beautiful carvings still visible on many medieval churches in the Irish countryside. Alongside these, there will be a collection of images detailing the fold beliefs of the Irish people such as Holy Bushes, Holy Wells and Cursing Stones-many of which are still places of religious activity in modern Ireland.

8. READER HAS ANDY IRVINE MANDOLIN FOR SALE

Hi George,

I am sure you will not remember me, or my friend Fred from Germany--- we met you in Prescott some years ago at a that big music festival they have up there every year.

In any case, I thought you might be a good person to ask regarding a mandolin I am going to be selling. It is a Gibson A4 with case from about 1910's.

The special thing about THIS particular instrument is that I bought it from Andy Irvine (formerly of PLANXTY) while he was giving a pub concert in Dusseldorf in the early 1990's. After the concert Andy, Fred and I went for some drinks at one of the Irish Pubs in Dusseldorf and had a great time chatting.

Andy had the mandolin for sale in Hamburg and had not sold it, so then he had it with him in Dus. The manager of the pub he was singing at, Brian, was a good friend of mine and Fred's, so that is how we got to chatting afterwards privately.

I had asked Andy if he knew of anyone who wanted to buy some (other) Gibson mandolins which I had for sale (I lived in Germany at that time). He laughed and said "I have not sold the A4 I have been wanting to sell in Hamburg even yet!" He then showed his to me, and it was in perfect condition in every way with a beautiful tone, and I was so impressed that I ended up buying his instead of selling him mine!

I had another reason why buying the mandolin from Andy directly had a special meaning. I fell in love with an Irish fellow once (1000 years ago) listening to Planxty while I was in Ireland. So it was nice later to be able to own an instrument played by Andy himself. You may know the song "West Coast of Claire" in which Andy had a fabulous mandolin solo --- well, that was the song I associated with that boy as well, since Claire was where we met.

I never thought I would ever want to sell that instrument. However, things happen in life, and, in the last 4 years, I have had thyroid cancer, herniated an L4 disc, have a bad knee and even had emergency gall bladder surgery. The month before my cancer was found, my mother had just died after an 11 month illness, and I was her caretaker.

Needless to say, all that left me with a mountain of bills. So now I am selling the instruments I have collected ( have 4 Gibsons in total).

But, the reason I am writing to you is that I thought you might know of someone for whom owning and instrument which ANDY owned might have some special meaning, like it did for me.

I even had a poster from his concert in Dus on which he wrote "To Lucie and Fred -- Next time we meet I want to hear YOU play the A4!" It is signed by him as well.

I will be putting actually all my instruments up for sale in probably in April, just though the paper, the Mandolin Cafe Website, or Ebay. Ebay is not so good for fine instruments in my opinion-- one wants to hear and feel a nice instrument -- I personally wouldn't want to buy one off Ebay.

So, in case you might know of someone who would be interested in Andy's A4, please do give them my email address.

Thanks again for taking the time to read my email!

11. QUESTION ABOUT SONG "MY OLD MAN'S A DUSTMAN"

I have been spending the last hour or so trying to track down two songs that might have been song in British pubs in the 1930s and your website keeps popping up and even though you are an Irish music website I thought you might be able to help me.

I am helping a WWII British POW compile his memoir and he remembers that one of the men in his unit who was from London used to sing the song "My Old Man's A Dustman". I see that on your website that you have the song listed as traditional and I've seen other websites where they list Lonnie Donegan as the writer of the song. I know that Donegan's version came out in 1960. My question to you is, could that song have been sung in London pubs in the 1920's and 1930's?

He also mentions another song for which he doesn't know the title, but recalls the lines: “In and out urinals, picking up the finals, don’t know shit from clay." I haven't been able to find anything on the internet and was wondering if it may ring any bells for you.

Thank you for any information you can give me.
