1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- BRAZEN HEADS VIDEOS SET NEW STANDARD

A few weeks ago the Brazen Heads presented two videos to support their new CD, “Who’s Your Paddy”: “One Eyed Reilley” and “Who’s Your Paddy”. From an artistic standpoint, their videos break new ground.

Most band videos are pretty simplistic. They are simply a presentation of a performance. In some cases, Celtic performers use professional video teams to produce DVD’s and use segments for online videos (Celtic Woman is a good example). But visually they are still just videos of performances. The other most common approach is a generic slide show of photos like pictures of Ireland.

The Brazen Heads videos go far beyond anything other Celtic performers are doing. The difference is that the Brazen Heads have scripted a series of sight gags that match the lyrics of the songs.

In terms of style, the Brazen Heads videos resemble the classic MTV videos of the 1980’s when record labels put big money into the video process. The Brazen Heads lack that kind of money, but made up for limited money with their creativity.

“One Eyed Reilley” reminds one of some of the segments of the classic Beetles movie “Help”. Drummer Roy Plisko wears an eye patch and makes faces as “One Eyed Reilley”, but it is guest Michael Fitzpatrick who provides most of laughs as a guest performer on the cow bell. The sight gags come fast and furious.

“Who’s Your Paddy” is the video debut of Shala Pero as Annie who simply steals the show. The “plot” is that Annie has a baby and no one knows who is the daddy/paddy. One at a time, everybody in the band comes to her room and then gets pushed into the closet as someone else arrives. Describing it does not do justice to the gags and how effective Shala is as the center of attention. Her expressions are just priceless.

More than just being effective at promoting the CD, their videos offer a chance for the performers to show their comic talents and personalities. The thought that went into the production of these videos puts them in a class of their own.

The videos can be seen at www.thebrazenheads.com/page4.php

--- BERTIE AHERN, IRELAND’S TAOISEACH TO STEP DOWN ON MAY 6

[EDITOR’S NOTE: I don’t generally cover general news, but this is a huge event to anyone with an interest in Ireland].

Bertie Ahern has been the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) since 1997 and has presided over one of the most extraordinary periods in Irish history including the emergence of the Celtic Tiger economy and as part of the peace deal in the North. After being elected three time, his exiting will mean a major change in Irish politics.

Beyond being a political leader, Bertie has been a controversial celebrity. His long time relationship (ended in 2003) with Celia Larkin upset the Catholic leadership of Ireland. One daughter, Cecelia Ahern is a successful novelist whose book “PS, I Love You” was converted into a movie. His other daughter, Georgina, is married to Nicky Byrne who fronts a successful Irish pop band: Westlife.

Lately, Bertie has been under attack for alleged corruption but has remained popular. It is not clear what will happen once he steps down, but Emigrant.ie notes there is speculation that he will run to become the President of the European Council, a post that comes into being with the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.

2. ROUND THE HOUSE AT ICC ON FRI AS PART OF DANCE-WICH DELIRIUM WEEKEND

Dear Phoenix & AZ Contra Dancers,

Do not miss the Dance-Wich Delirium Weekend coming up very soon! Please support the Phoenix Friends of Old-Time Music events that feature real-life musicians, callers, and dancers in a world of high-tech distractions. Your response determines whether or not we will continue sponsoring these special events.

Round the House will be bringing a dynamic performance of Irish music to the Irish Cultural Center and lively dance music to Kenilworth School. They describe their style as traditional Irish music with a twist of Tucson. They have captivated concert and festival audiences for over ten years with innovative arrangements of traditional songs and lively dance tunes that shine with rhythm, lilt and drive. They are known for creating exceptional rapport with audiences and have an enthusiastic following that is growing every year. Their 2007 recording, “Safe Home,” is played on folk and roots radio programs throughout the U.S. and has received outstanding reviews. Round the House has been awarded the Tucson Area Musicians Award for best traditional ethnic band for six years running. In addition, individual members have won awards for best guitar, best strings, and best female vocalist.

Several dancers from the Bracken School of Irish Dance also will be featured during the concert, displaying the intricate rhythms, precise timing and complex patterns and footwork of step-dancing. Their teacher, Thomas Bracken, has inspired and trained Irish dancers in Arizona for nearly a dozen years, and his students have achieved recognition at regional, national and world competitions and championships. This concert will appeal to audiences of all ages, and is especially family friendly, with discounted ticket prices for children under 12. See below for all the details.

Susan Petrick from Reno, NV will be calling with Round the House for two dances Saturday, April 12. The afternoon event features challenging contras, a thrill for experienced dancers. If you know the basic moves, please join us. Susan also will call the regular 2nd Saturday dance that evening; newcomer lesson at 7 pm. Susan Petrick has been calling for 8 years. Her programs feature great flow and a teaching style that is clear and concise. She calls throughout the Midwest and East as well as up and down the West Coast. Let’s be sure to give her a Phoenix welcome!

6. MEMO FROM TONY NORRIS

Dear George,

I'm fresh back from Mexico and the Fourth San Felipe Folk Festival. This year the festival was hosted by Tim at The Lighthouse, a lovely Mediteranean style resturant that looks out over the fishing town of San Felipe from one of the highest points around. We performed on the balcony with the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe right behind us. Performers included Jesse Anderson, Warren Miller, Aaron Norris, Steve Lord, Colin Spring and Barkley Coggins. Our audience watched a brilliant sunset and ate fresh seafood while the band played on .......
Barkley posted some photos on FLICKR. See them at

Spring is sproinging in Flagstaff -- green shoots slipping up through the dead leaves and apple blossoms ready to burst out of their fat buds. Enjoy it all and I'll see you soon, Tony Norris
