1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- IRISH ART SHOW DEFINITELY WORTH CHECKING OUT

I finally got over to the Phoenix Art Museum to see the Brian Burns collection of Irish Art. It is well worth the visit.

Made up of roughly 40 pieces, the bulk of the exhibit was art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries reflecting the various schools and styles of the period. It is obvious how much influence 19th century French styles had on the Irish (with several Irish painters having spent time in France) but none of the works seemed in any way derivative.

For most Irish Americans, I’m sure the works of Jack Yeats are the big attraction. Jack Yeats was far more than just William Butler Yeats’ brother as he was an outstanding painter. This exhibit gave a sample of how his style changed over time.

Show will continue through the end of the month.

--- BARRAGE CONCERT IN WICKENBURG SOLD OUT

The Canadian group Barrage will be in Wickenburg on Sat. Their concert is listed as sold out, but it may be worth trying the phone number at the 928-684-6624.

3. IRISH FOUNDATION SPRING PICNIC ON SUN APR 22

Whether you are Irish, Scots, Welsh or just enjoy a picnic, you are invited to attend the Irish Foundation of Arizona's Spring Picnic on Sunday, April 22. It will be held at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central, Phoenix, from Noon until 5:00.

Just $5.00 will buy you all the hot dogs and hamburgers you want. And children under 12 are admitted free. We'd appreciate it if you would bring your favorite side dish, salad or dessert to share.

There will be another fun silent auction with several of framed photos of Ireland, a gift certificate from Phoenix City Grill and lots of other goodies. Contributions to the auction may be brought the day of the picnic or dropped off at the Center beforehand. We'll also being selling our new baseball caps and visors sporting the American and Irish Flags.

There will be activities for the children and a cash bar for the grown-ups. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments to entertain all of us.

So bring your friends and relatives but leave the ants at home. See you at the picnic.

4. MEMO FROM THE KNOCKABOUTS AT CHARLY’S ON SAT

Hey George,

The Knockabouts are back in Flagstaff on Saturday, April 14th at Charly's Pub in the Hotel Weatherford at 9 PM. After taking our fair share of good natured jabs for not playing in Flagstaff on St. Patrick's Day , the Knockabouts promise to make it a fun night for everyone. Just a reminder, I think the high for next week in Flag is around 65 so come on up and get out of the heat. The following week (April 20 - 21) the K'bouts will be in Prescott at Celtic Crossings Pub starting at 8PM.

Thanks
John

6. INTRODUCTION TO TUCSON’S JAMIE O’BRIEN

Hi George,

Jamie O’Brien is a London-Irishman who has sung and played guitar for as long as he can remember. He delves back into his family’s Irish and music hall repertoires, mixing them with songs he’s learnt from friends and fellow musicians over the years.

He’s played extensively in a dozen or more countries on two continents, as a group member (Fánaí, Laune Rangers, RHB), an accompanist or solo. He made Pennsylvania his home for nearly two decades before moving to the Tucson area in 2006. He has a solo album available (My Wild Irish Boy) and looks forward to a new CD being released later this year.

More details on Jamie and his music can be found at www.launies.com.

Thanks for all you're doing.

Regards,

Jamie O'Brien

Dear George, I'd appreciate it if you included this in the next newsletter.

Zoukfest 2007, to be held in Santa Fe, NM, at the College of Santa Fe from June 10 – 16, will have classes in Irish bouzouki, mandolin, fiddle, tenor banjo, and singing—from a great staff put together by Roger Landes, ace bouzouki and mando player.

This year, music credits can be earned by teachers/students, for their ongoing education, from the College of Santa Fe.

The week will also feature classes in some other world-music styles, like Balkan and mid-Eastern playing, for the more eclectic among us. Check out the site for details, registration, etc.: www.zoukfest.com

The class schedule for the week looks like this: www.zoukfest.com/classes/

Also, If you register by April 10th, you can be part of a free tuition drawing, so check it out.

If anyone has any questions, the ZoukFest staff will answer them right away—or feel free to email me below. I love the fact that I can drive there with the instruments from AZ instead of having to fly. I’ve been before and, I’m going again this year!
