Celtic Woman (woman rather than women) is the realization of a dream for Composer and Musical Director, David Downes and Show Producer, Sharon Browne. Downes had been the music director of Riverdance and looked to produce a show focused strictly women performers. It has been a huge hit from the very start.
On the surface, the “concept” of Celtic Woman seems rather unpromising. Take four solo women vocalists and a fiddler, set them up on a stage and back them up with a virtual orchestra of musicians. Unlike the Irish Tenors who were mostly geared to the classical music audience or the humor and music cabaret shows that hit the US every March, Celtic Woman was geared to the same audience as Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, and the and the other Flatley inspired shows. The question was whether there was an audience for people to simply watch singers without dance or some other form of action. Whatever the fears, Celtic Woman is a huge success.
If there is criticism of Celtic Woman, it is usually that the show appears to more traditional eyes as “over produced” and “glitzy”. The same was said of Riverdance. But the women of Celtic Woman are all extremely talented as well as beautiful. In any case, the show works.
After three DVD’s, repeated exposure on PBS, and sold out shows in Europe and America, the answer has obviously been “yes”. Through the creative use of lighting, staging, and selection of material; the team of Downes and Brown have taken the show from simply a showcase of excellent performers into a very effective show.
The performers in Celtic Woman continue to change. In original members Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon, Lisa Kelly, Mairead Nesbitt, and Meav Ni Mhaolchatha (who has left to continue her solo caree), the group Hayley Westenra and Lynn Hilary to replace Meav and Alex Sharpe to fill in for Lisa Kelly who left on maternity leave. The plan appears to be that they will always have five performers for the live shows, but will alternate certain vocalists for each show.
I will admit that I have not seen their show live. It is well out of my price range. But if the videos are any indication, they are pretty impressive.

APRIL 2008
---- News ----
Oceans took a few days off after the "mad month of Mars", well we did some work on our in-progress Christmas album, (should be ready by December!) thanks to Kyle Harris, and we've been preparing our albums for digital download on the major Internet companies( by individual track or by the CD), thanks due to Anthony Hindson. And then there are the taxes (thanks Steve), and not to forget planning a Pan-Celtic Gala show (thanks J), to involve Irish, Scots and Welsh material, dance, song, guest musicians, pipes and drums, live projection (Thanks Mark Foshee).... More on that later. Then, in our spare time, we spent a few hours with our long-suffering wives. So, please forgive the tardiness of this posting. and hope to see you at the end of April gigs!!

4. READINGS FROM “QUEST FOR THE MODERN CELTIC SOUL” ON MAY 6 AT DESERT RIDGE BARNES AND NOBLE
An Irish Affair
Join Barbara Euser and Connie Burke as they present thirty slides of Counties Cork and Waterford and read from selected stories in their latest travel anthology, Venturing in Ireland: Quest for the Modern Celtic Soul, Barnes & Noble Bookstore Desert Ridge Marketplace 21001 N. Tatum Blvd. Phoenix on May 6, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Ireland, land of soft rain, green grass, poets, writers, strong drink, and even stronger women. Enough of the clichés, Ireland and the Irish have been stereotyped to death, ever since the first talking pictures when American actors thought they could speak with an Irish accent.
However in June this year at least one cliché was true, an invasion of strong women from all over the world stormed Cork, oh and they were writers and poets, so maybe the clichés work. The Writer's Workshop brought all the women whose stories appear in this book together. To eat, drink, play and work, and in the spaces between be soothed by the soft accents, baffled by Irish humour and encouraged to drink the black brew, Guinness (sure it's good for what ails ye).
The stories recount each women's own special response to this special island, to each other, their lives and loves far away and the delicious feeling of liberty and fellowship which comes from being able to take time out of the everyday and enter into a magical realm, were friendship is celebrated through exploration, discovery and the creation of stories.
Stories tell us a lot, about ourselves, about a place, and of course about the writer, and these writers have wonderful stories to tell. I am proud they chose my homeland for their unique gathering and even prouder that the resulting book demonstrates the power of place in inspiring imaginations and nurturing creative souls.

5. MEMO FROM THE BRAZEN HEADS
George,
On behalf of the band I wanted to say a very large thanks for such a glowing review of our videos, we appreciate it more than this short note can express. We did also want to make sure to say large thanks to both Tim Finnegan's Pub and everyone that showed up to the pub that early Sunday morning to play our "pub crowd", we couldn't have done it without them.
For those of you interested or curious--both of our videos were self produced in conjunction with Zebra Motion Arts, a Phoenix based video production company.
