Celtic Woman
Celtic Woman was the product of a dream by music producer Sharon Browne who wanted to showcase some of Ireland's finest female vocalists and performers. She produced a PBS program which has been aired on over 200 stations around the USA., a CD which has sold over 500,000 copies and the DVD has sold over 50,000 and is going strong.
"Swept away by the sounds of Ireland's 'Celtic Woman' " - Boston Globe
"Ireland's newest musical sensation" - Irish Echo
"Celtic Woman finds it's musical niche" - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
The women that make up Celtic Woman: Mairead Nesbitt, Meav Ni Mhaolchatha, Orla Fallon, Lisa Kelly, and Chloe Agnew.
Celtic Woman is the realisation of a dream for Composer and Musical Director, David Downes and Show Producer, Sharon Browne. Together with Dave Kavanagh, Executive Producer of the Show, they created Celtic Woman to feature the very special talents of four young Irish female vocalists and a very exciting young fiddle player. The five women vocalists, Chloe, Lisa, Meav and Órla and fiddle player Mairead are led by David Downes, a prodigious young Irish talent, who has previously worked as musical director of Riverdance. Celtic Woman portrays the unique voices and styles of each of the girls as soloists as well as fantastic ensemble numbers. Performing beautiful and much-loved songs, Celtic Woman features unique renditions of Irish songs such as: "Danny Boy," timeless classics like "Ave Maria", contemporary songs such as Enya's "Orinoco Flow" and Clannad's "Harry's Game", and a host of spellbinding original songs created by David Downes.Celtic Woman started life as a 90-minute show for PBS, which premiered in the US in March 2005. The show was broadcast on over 300 stations and such was its success that it was developed into a full scale touring production. The Celtic Woman CD & DVD were released through Manhattan Records (EMI) on March 1st 2005. Since its release the CD has been certified gold and the DVD has been certified platinum. The CD has also been No 1 in the Billboard World Music Chart for over 60 weeks.

ICC - www.azirish.org/main.shtml
Robin Huw Bowen's influence on the world of Welsh folk music and harping has
been far-reaching. Of the few harpists worldwide who can play the triple
harp, he is the foremost professional now specializing solely in this
particular field. He is recognized internationally as the leading exponent
of the Welsh national instrument and ranks among the most important figures
that Welsh traditional music has produced. At the Machynlleth Festival 2000
Robin was awarded the Glyndwr Award for "an outstanding contribution to the
arts in Wales".
Although Robin's repertoire closely reflects that of the Welsh harp in its
heyday (mid-17th to the end of the 19th Century) his playing and
interpretation of the music continue the unbroken tradition. Whether it is a
fiery tune from the repertoire of the Welsh Gypsies, a long forgotten
hornpipe or a slow air showing off the intricacies of his harp's three sets
of strings and the unique style of variations on the melody, Robin Huw Bowen
is a master musician.
The Press Are Saying...
Robin is a stunningly good harpist...the notes trip off the strings with
rhythmic precision and melodic empathy.
Just to remind you all that Robin Huw Bowen, Master of the Welsh Gipsy Harp, will be in concert at the Irish Cultural Center (www.azirish.org/main.shtml) , this Thursday at 7:00 pm
Tickets ($15:00/$12:00 seniors and children) are available at the door or in advance at 602-258-0109

4. FRI MAY 4 - LASAGNA AND A NEW ARTIST FOR FIRST FRIDAY
This gallery of photographs by Tamara Ryan shows the progression of her interest in Arizona photography since the 1980’s. As a member of the Lake Havasu Art Guild in the 1980’s she received accolades for her photography. To see some of the earlier images ranging from the 1960’s through the 1980’s you may visit her website: http://www.tamryan.com. Other photographs on display will be of South and West Wales, United Kingdom. After moving to Mesa, Arizona in 1997, she became interested in following some of her Welsh family roots by visiting Wales in 2002, 2003 and 2006. In 2004 she produced a DVD Postcard of Wales which may be purchased at the Irish Cultural Center’s gift shop and through her website: http://www.walesdvd.com.
Tamara is, also, a member of the Welsh League of Arizona and has been taking the Welsh language course here at the Center since 2005. A selection of images from her trip to South and West Wales will be on display during the month of May 2007 at the Irish Cultural Center, as well. Be sure to visit the Welsh League of Arizona’s website to view some of the Welsh League’s events and photo pages at http://www.welshleagueofarizona.org.
Chef Steven is taking the month of May off so our $10.00 dinner will be fresh baked lasagna catered by Calabria Italian Deli located near the corner of the historic 3rd Avenue and Roosevelt.
As usual, there will be a seisiun and musicians are encouraged to come by and help out.
5. SUN MAY 6 - DR. NIALL BRADY RETURNS TO THE CENTER SUN AFTERNOON
Dr. Niall Brady speaks about The Medieval Rural Settlement Project on Sunday, May 6, 2007 2:00 PM. Admission is only $5.
Dr. Niall Brady, lead archaeologist and Project Director for the Medieval Rural Settlement Project, one of eight ongoing archaeological investigations carried out by The Discovery Programme. The Discovery Programme ( www.discoveryprogramme.ie ) is a non-profit research institute funded by the government of the Irish Republic. Dr. Brady's visit is made possible by the Office of International Education and the Study Abroad in Ireland Program at Mesa Community College. Students in that program will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Brady this summer in Ireland. The Discovery Programme is an archaeological research institution dedicated to investigating Ireland's past from earliest times and presenting the results to as wide an audience as possible.
[EDITOR’S NOTE: The opportunity to have Dr. Brady speak came up at the last moment, which explains the unusual program time. His presentation last spring was a huge success and several students signed up to work on his dig.]
6. FRI MAY 11 - MICHAEL PERKINS PRESENTS MOVIE EVELYN AT THE ICC
Mike Perkins returns to the Irish Cultural Center to present a treasure of a film -- Evelyn. The film begins at 7:30 on , Friday May 11. Mr. Perkins will lead a discussion about the film and the relevance to Irish history. Admission is only $5.
Produced by the movie's star, Pierce Brosnan and directed by Bruce Beresford (''Driving Miss Daisy''), the 2002 movie Evelyn was based on a true story. Brosnan plays a man who fought the authorities of the 1950's for the rightr to raise his children and in the process would change Irish law and perhaps even Irish society.
"A drama based on the true story of Desmond Doyle and his young children, Evelyn, Maurice and Dermot. Abandoned by his wife, Doyle does his best to make it as a single dad, raising his kids alone in Ireland in 1953. Their life isn't easy--but above all else in the world, Doyle loves his children. Unfortunately, when his wife's mother reports her daughter's abandonment to the authorities, the power of the Church and the Irish courts take his children away and put them in orphanages. Doyle is devastated. Vowing to reunite his family, he enlists the help of new friend Bernadette Beattie, her solicitor brother Michael, their American lawyer friend Nick and Nick's mentor Tom Connolly. Together they attempt to do what has never been done before--challenge a law before the Irish Supreme Court. Doyle's fight to keep his family intact becomes an uplifting testament to the strength of a father's love and the power of the human spirit. " Yahoo Movies Http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808403930/details
The movie Evelyn has an incredibly fine cast including Pierce Brosnan
Aidan Quinn, Alan Bates, Stephen Rea, Julianna Margulies and Sophie Vavasseur (as Evelyn). Of course, this is also one of the most genuinely sweet films to come along in quite some time.

Robin's style reminisces the carefree, Welsh gypsy harpists of the last
century, who clung to the tradition of the triple harp even as the
respectable London soiree crowd were trading theirs for fashionable new
pedal harps. His infectious, always sensitive, sometimes irreverent,
arrangements delight in taking the triple harp out of the parlor and into
the public house for a bit of fun.
