1. OUT AND ABOUT
----------------------------------------------------------
--- FINNEGAN'S SEISIUN DEBUT A HUGE SUCCESS
----------------------------------------------------------
There were questions about whether there is room for another seisiun, especially since there is a highly successful seisiun at Fibber Magee’s in Chandler. There has not been a public seisiun on the west/north side since 2003, so no one knew how well this seisiun would do. It did just fine.
After a slow start, the seisiun attracted 18 players for an impressive debut. Finnegan's seisiun is scheduled for every Sun from noon to 3:00 PM, but this one was going so well that it did not break up until 4:00 PM. There were several people there who have not been active in the seisiun scene, most notably John McMorrow of The McMorrows.
I did not feel so lonely doing vocals with other vocalists including John McMorrow, Tommy Hamilton (co-manager of Tim Finnegan’s), and Noel O'Cualain (Rabharta) singing as well. I’m hopeful can we can get more vocalists involved.

From Siobhan O’Connor Tobin
Hello Neighbor,
In an effort to provide support and funds to a victim of random violence… O’Connor’s Pub is holding a fund raising event on May 10, 2008. Katie Blair, a single mother with four children, was assaulted by a group of random wrong doers. Katie and one of her daughters were beaten to an extent that hospitalization, surgical intervention and time away from their employment was necessary.
The economic impact of the hospital bills and time away from work has caused an unforeseen hardship.
I am writing to invite your business to donate an item or gift certificate for the silent auction. All auction items are donated by businesses like yours - as well as friends and family of Katie.
Thank you for your thoughtful contribution.
Sincerely,
Siobhan Tobin

6. GRAND CANYON STATE FEIS IN SCOTTSDALE ON SUN JUNE 1
Grand Canyon State Feis
The Hilton Scottsdale Resort & Villas
6333 North Scottsdale Road
Scottsdale, Arizona
Sunday, June 1, 2008
Welcome to the First Annual Grand Canyon Feis! For our new venture, we have booked the Scottsdale Hilton Resort and Villas, located in the heart of the most fabulous shopping and golf suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. A beautiful four-star hotel, the Hilton is offering a discounted feis room rate of $99/night, and planning to provide “by-the-pool” dining options for Saturday evening.
We are presently firming up an exceptional roster of talented musicians and adjudicators, including several from Ireland. Check out our website for the latest information at www.grandcanyonfeis.org.
We hope the care we are taking to organize our feis will enable all our guests to have a memorable and enjoyable experience here. We plan to stage a timely and well-run event. To further that end, we have engaged Forsworn to facilitate the entry and results process (www.feisworx.com).
The closing date for entries is Wednesday, May 21st, 2008. Please observe this date in order to ensure your dancer’s inclusion in the feis program. A $20 later fee per dancer will be charged for entry after that date. Any financial support is always greatly appreciated, and opportunities are available for advertising and trophy donation. See our website (www.grandcanyonfeis.org) and Feisworx for details.
Even though our feis is new, many of the committee members have had many years experience in running feiseanna, and are committed to hosting a grand event.
Come visit us in sunny Phoenix, get in an extra feis before the Nationals, and have a lovely Irish weekend of dancing, with shopping, golf, and resort fun as well.
Looking forward to a great weekend in June!
Sincerely,
Grand Canyon State Feis Committee
www.grandcanyonfeis.org
[EDITOR’S NOTE: Most people outside the dance community may be a bit confused about where this dance school and feis have come from.
Several years ago Heather McElliott left for the east coast and her school was taken over by Riverdance star Michael Patrick Gallagher. Later they merged with the Tir Conaill Irish Dance Academy of Tucson, headed by Chris McGrory. Chris is also a very a well known accordionist who has recorded four Irish dance CD’s. Tir Conaill already hosts the Old Pueblo Feis (Sept 8).]

8. READINGS FROM “QUEST FOR THE MODERN CELTIC SOUL” ON TUE MAY 6 AT DESERT RIDGE BARNES AND NOBLE
An Irish Affair
Join Barbara Euser and Connie Burke as they present thirty slides of Counties Cork and Waterford and read from selected stories in their latest travel anthology, Venturing in Ireland: Quest for the Modern Celtic Soul, Barnes & Noble Bookstore Desert Ridge Marketplace 21001 N. Tatum Blvd. Phoenix on May 6, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Ireland, land of soft rain, green grass, poets, writers, strong drink, and even stronger women. Enough of the clichés, Ireland and the Irish have been stereotyped to death, ever since the first talking pictures when American actors thought they could speak with an Irish accent.
However in June this year at least one cliché was true, an invasion of strong women from all over the world stormed Cork, oh and they were writers and poets, so maybe the clichés work. The Writer's Workshop brought all the women whose stories appear in this book together. To eat, drink, play and work, and in the spaces between be soothed by the soft accents, baffled by Irish humour and encouraged to drink the black brew, Guinness (sure it's good for what ails ye).
The stories recount each women's own special response to this special island, to each other, their lives and loves far away and the delicious feeling of liberty and fellowship which comes from being able to take time out of the everyday and enter into a magical realm, were friendship is celebrated through exploration, discovery and the creation of stories.
Stories tell us a lot, about ourselves, about a place, and of course about the writer, and these writers have wonderful stories to tell. I am proud they chose my homeland for their unique gathering and even prouder that the resulting book demonstrates the power of place in inspiring imaginations and nurturing creative souls.

12. BUILLE IN FLAGSTAFF ON THUR MAY 15
Living Traditions Presentations is proud to bring you another Irish music experience, by the name of Buille. ‘Buílle’ means blow, stroke or beat, or in this presenter’s opinion, you’ll be blown away by the artistry and amazing music performed by these three well-known musicians. This concert is sponsored by NAU Community Music and Dance Academy and Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society. Buille will be performing Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 7:30pm in Ashurst Auditorium on NAU’s north campus. Doors will open at 7:00pm. Tickets are available from NAU Central Ticketing (928-523-5661) Cedar Music, or Jitters Coffee. Tickets are $25, $23 for NACHS, FFOTM, NAU/CCC Faculty/Staff, and Seniors, and $15 for children (17 and under) and NAU/CCC students.
About the Band
Buille first came into being during the summer of 2004. It combines the unique talents of Niall Vallely on concertina, Paul Meehan on guitar and Caoimhín Vallely on piano. They have just completed their debut album which will be released on the Vertical label in June. The album consists mostly of new music composed by Niall Vallely over the past couple of years. While based in traditional Irish forms, the music draws on a wide range of influences from the worlds of jazz and classical music in particular.
Armagh-born Niall Vallely has established himself in recent years as one of the most original and distinctive voices in Irish music. A former member of Cork-based band NOMOS, he has been acclaimed throughout the world as one of Ireland's greatest concertina players. He has played with Michaél Ó Súilleabháin, Karen Casey, Tim O’Brien, Paddy Keenan, and many others.
Paul grew up and started learning Irish music in Manchester in the midst of a flourishing scene . In his early teens Paul moved back to Middletown, County Armagh with his family. He quickly established himself as a rising star on the banjo, while more recently spending a lot of time on the guitar. He has toured with Karen Casey band and is a member of Lunasa. He’s also performed with Altan, Paddy Keenan, Tommy Peoples, Liz Carroll, and many others.
Like his older brother, Niall, Caoimhín grew up in Armagh and began tin whistle lessons at the Armagh Pipers Club before moving on to learn the fiddle. He also started classical piano lessons at this time.
What the experts think…
Together “Buille is as fresh a breath that's blown through traditional (and roots) circles in a long, long time.” – The Irish Times “Buílle is mostly Niall's own tunes, often in the Irish or Scottish idiom, and invariably played with the type of flair and musicality which most of us can only wonder at…Miss it if you dare.” – Irish Music Magazine
“…of all the albums issued in pursuit of the holy grail of trad-jazz-classical fusion,
"Buille" ranks near the top in vision and execution. If Niall Vallely, Caoimhín Vallely, and Paul Meehan have not quite hit upon something startlingly new in sound, they have most assuredly raised that sound to a new level of skill, sophistication, and soul worthy of any Irish music devotee's interest.” - Irish Echo
13. VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT FOR CHANNEL 8 PLEDGE DRIVE ON THUR JUNE 5
Hello Everyone,
On the evening of June 5, a production of Celtic Thunder will be aired on our local PBS station, Channel 8. A few of the group members of Celtic Thunder are scheduled to be in the KAET studio during that time. KAET will be offering the pledge callers tickets to a future concert.
We think it would be fun to get a group of the Irish to volunteer for that evening. KAET will announce the name of our group on air as being volunteers in the studio.
DATE: Thursday, June 5, 2008
TIME: 5:45 - 10:00 pm
PLACE: KAET-TV studio on the Tempe campus of ASU
DINNER: Complimentary dinner is being provided by Fry's Marketplace.
Please respond by phone 480 946-5008.
Looking forward to volunteering with you.
Sincerely,
Anne
[EDITOR’S NOTE: Celtic Thunder is the brainchild of Sharon Browne and Phil Coulter. It is a collection of five male solo vocalists from wildly different backgrounds. I can find nothing to indicate they are schedule to play Arizona this year, but their American tour takes them to Utah and Colorado, so it is not out of the question they may add Arizona.
