1. OUT AND ABOUT

----------------------------------------------------------
-- SIGNUP TO SEE GAELIC SPORTS AT THE DUBLINER
----------------------------------------------------------

We are trying to get the Gaelic Football and Hurling games to be shown at the Dubliner Irish Pub again this year but don’t know if there is enough interest. The cost is $200 per person to get in for the whole season (usually Sundays but some Saturdays – it runs from May through September). Otherwise it is $25 entry fee per game. We would to know if there will be enough people that are willing to pay for the season or at least will be coming for a game here and there as last year we had a difficult time covering the entire cost of getting the games aired. Please email or call Johnny McGuinness by week of May 16 to let him know if you are interested. We’d also appreciate it if you would forward this email or message to any of your friends/coworkers/people you know that may like to watch the games.

Games begin Sunday, May 18

3. BUILLE AT ASHURST HALL IN FLAGSTAFF ON THUR

Living Traditions Presentations is proud to bring you another Irish music experience, by the name of Buille. ‘Buílle’ means blow, stroke or beat, or in this presenter’s opinion, you’ll be blown away by the artistry and amazing music performed by these three well-known musicians. This concert is sponsored by NAU Community Music and Dance Academy and Northern Arizona Celtic Heritage Society. Buille will be performing Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 7:30pm in Ashurst Auditorium on NAU’s north campus. Doors will open at 7:00pm. Tickets are available from NAU Central Ticketing (928-523-5661) Cedar Music, or Jitters Coffee. Tickets are $25, $23 for NACHS, FFOTM, NAU/CCC Faculty/Staff, and Seniors, and $15 for children (17 and under) and NAU/CCC students.

About the Band

Buille first came into being during the summer of 2004. It combines the unique talents of Niall Vallely on concertina, Paul Meehan on guitar and Caoimhín Vallely on piano. They have just completed their debut album which will be released on the Vertical label in June. The album consists mostly of new music composed by Niall Vallely over the past couple of years. While based in traditional Irish forms, the music draws on a wide range of influences from the worlds of jazz and classical music in particular.

Armagh-born Niall Vallely has established himself in recent years as one of the most original and distinctive voices in Irish music. A former member of Cork-based band NOMOS, he has been acclaimed throughout the world as one of Ireland's greatest concertina players. He has played with Michaél Ó Súilleabháin, Karen Casey, Tim O’Brien, Paddy Keenan, and many others.

Paul grew up and started learning Irish music in Manchester in the midst of a flourishing scene . In his early teens Paul moved back to Middletown, County Armagh with his family. He quickly established himself as a rising star on the banjo, while more recently spending a lot of time on the guitar. He has toured with Karen Casey band and is a member of Lunasa. He’s also performed with Altan, Paddy Keenan, Tommy Peoples, Liz Carroll, and many others.

Like his older brother, Niall, Caoimhín grew up in Armagh and began tin whistle lessons at the Armagh Pipers Club before moving on to learn the fiddle. He also started classical piano lessons at this time.
What the experts think…

Together “Buille is as fresh a breath that's blown through traditional (and roots) circles in a long, long time.” – The Irish Times

“Buílle is mostly Niall's own tunes, often in the Irish or Scottish idiom, and invariably played with the type of flair and musicality which most of us can only wonder at…Miss it if you dare.” – Irish Music Magazine

“…of all the albums issued in pursuit of the holy grail of trad-jazz-classical fusion, "Buille" ranks near the top in vision and execution. If Niall Vallely, Caoimhín Vallely, and Paul Meehan have not quite hit upon something startlingly new in sound, they have most assuredly raised that sound to a new level of skill, sophistication, and soul worthy of any Irish music devotee's interest.” - Irish Echo

9. CONCERT REVIEW: CELTIC WOMAN

George O’Brien - Arizona Irish Music Society

Last Mother’s Day I was asked to attend the Celtic Woman concert as a reviewer for the Desert Shamrock. As expected, it was a great show. My only problem was to figure out what to say.

I imagine there must be at least a dozen people who have not seen at least part of a Celtic Woman shows on PBS. For those people who have never seen their show, it is actually pretty simple. They start with a very talented and good looking female solo vocalists and, a fiddle player They are supported by some musicians and backup vocalists. They rotate through each woman as performer (sometimes with backup) and do a few ensemble pieces.

Celtic Woman (woman rather than “women”) is the realization of a dream for Composer and Musical Director, David Downes and Show Producer, Sharon Browne. Downes had been the music director of Riverdance and looked to produce a show focused strictly women performers, but with the production values of Riverdance. It has been a huge hit from the very start.

Most of the material covered at the concert were included on their “A New Journey” CD and DVD and including Celtic standards such as Caledonia, She Moved Through The Fair, Dúlaman, Sail Away, Carrickfergus, and Scarborough Fair.

The material was not all Celtic. Examples include Chloe’s version of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and Lisa Kelly’s “Beyond the Sea”, but generally the music has at least Celtic feel. Also, included original material by Downes like “The Sky and the Dawn and the Sun” and “At the Ceili”.

PERFORMERS

One key to the Celtic Woman show is that it is that their vocalists are fairly well matched. When the group was started, only Meav Ni Mhaolchatha had a major reputation. But Celtic Woman has been able to substitute for Meav and others without missing a beat. The Celtic Woman website has a list of seven performers including Meav (who recorded with them but does not tour since she is currently focused on her solo career), The show now uses four vocalists, but not always the same four.

Each woman has her own voice, but Chloe probably has the most distinctive sound. Starting with the group at the age of 16, whe has an impressive range which is really showcased on her “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”. Although young, she is a veteran who produced her first CD at the age of 12 and had been on her mother’s TV show at the age of 6.

Orla Fallon is the only vocalist to play an instrument. She accompanied herself on the harp on a couple of pieces including one of my favorites,“Carrickfergus” Orla has a haunting voice and the harp is a great addition.

Lisa Kelly gave the first solo performance of the show singing “Caledonia”. Besides having a beautiful voice, Lisa may have the most notable stage presence that comes from growing up in musical theater family and moves like a dancer.

I’m honestly not sure who the fourth vocalist was: Alex Sharpe or Hayley Westenra. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific, but I have a lot of problems every time a woman changes their hairdo. I’m guessing it was Hayley, but don’t hold me to it. Both came to Celtic Woman with great credentials. Alex’s background includes quite a bi success in musical theater while Hayley of New Zealand has had two very successful solo albums (combined 3 CD’s million sold).

While Cletic Woman is mostly known for the great vocals, a case could be made that the real “star” of the live show is fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt. She dancess while playing and brings a lot of energy to a show. My reaction to her performance is that a beautifl pixie had been let loose on stage. Her just coming on stage invariably led to applause.

How good is Máiréad? Her biography on the Celtic Woman website gives just a hint of her credentials: www.celticwoman.com/trellis/Mairead/

“Her blend of traditional Irish and classical styles earned her Irish Music Magazine's title of Best Traditional Female (2003) and has given her the opportunity to work with such illustrious acts as Nigel Kennedy, Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, Clannad, Emmylou Harris, Aslan, Chris De Burgh, Jimmy Webb, and Irish acts Donal Lunny's Coolfin, Sharon Shannon, Paul Brady, Frances Black, Cooney and Begley, and Jimmy McCarthy. She's played on the original soundtracks of the shows Riverdance, Lord of the Dance and Feet of Flames and subsequently performed in three world tours as the original lead fiddle in Lord of the Dance and Feet of Flames. She tours with her own band and has also played and recorded with the Afro-Celt Sound System.”

The five women are backed by an eight member choir (4 men and four women) who not only sing but participate in one of the dance numbers. Unlike the shows on the videos which has a full orchestra, the touring show has just five musicians: Des Moore - guitar, Eoghan O'Neill - bass, John O'Brien - uillean Pipes, whistle, bazouki, Ray Fean - percussion, Nicky Bailey - Percussion, and Feargal Murray - piano , keyboard. The percussionists have a very elaborate setup including huge gongs and are featured on some of the pieces. Neither the accompanists nor the choir are really featured, which is too bad. They are extremely good.

The shows on the videos had entire orchestras, but the six musicans were able to get the job done. I only counted a couple of instances where they resorted to using recorded music to enhance the live performers.

PRODUCTION

Clearly this is a very talented group at every level. But what separates Celtic Woman from most shows is the way it is produced. It is hard to write about it because my “trad side” says that things like the set, the lighting and the way the performers move around should not matter. But no one questions just how impressive the production side is at making this a great show.

Ordinarily lighting and staging is pretty secondary when it comes to Irish music. Clearly David Downes’ experience with Riverdance is evident as the lighting (and other effects like smoke) makes a huge difference. It appeared there was a totally different lighting scheme for every piece from lighted steps, spotlights through fog, lights for a starry night background, switching spots during a dueling bodhran intro, and so on. I don’t know who to credit (Drew Ngagey was the- Lighting Director), but the lighting was very effective.

The stage designer had a major challenge. The stage set on their videos is absolutely huge. Their Christmas concert was in an outdoor venue. But the set was an integral part of their presentation since it tied in so closely with the show’s choreography. While Máiréad Nesbitt on the fiddle was the only performer that did much real dancing, almost every piece involved some kind of choreographed walking around on stage.

I have not reviewed the early videos recently, but my impression was that there was much more choregraphed movement than in earlier shows. In the second set there were several pieces where the women would swing their skirts around in tempo with the music. The most impressive example was on a piece titled “At the Ceili” where three of the women dance with some of the guys from the chorus.

The show does a great job of keeping the attention to the audience without resorting to a lot of pop songs. “Over the Rainbow” was pretty much the only exception and it is likely to remain in future shows because Chloe does such a great job with it. Some of it was that it felt like they did a slightly higher percentage of up tempo pieces. As it was, they finished the second set with three back to back high energy production numbers that each produced standing ovations.

Overall, Celtic Woman provided an outstanding show. With the great response they got, I’m sure they will be back fairly soon.

DVD’s of Celtic Woman can be obtained at the gift shop at the Irish Cultural Center at 1106 N. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ. 602-258-0109.
