Claire is a virtuoso on both instruments and it will be her first Tucson appearance. Their CD "Secret Orders" is one of the finest releases in Celtic music in the past few years. 2duos includes Aaron and Claire, along with Gudrun Walther and Jergen Treyz of the band Cara. This quartet just released a CD, and Cara has a new live CD and DVD. Some dancers will join in a finale along with all 7 performers on stage.

8. TRIP TO PRESCOTT

The Highland Games in Prescott were blessed twith very nice weather last Sat. I was pleasantly surprised by how it actually cooled off in the afternoon. After over a week of 100 degree weather in Phoenix, this was wonderful.

I got a late start and ran into some heavy traffic so I did not arrive until about 10:30 AM. My first stop was at the main stage where a I caught Oceans Apart who were followed by the Knockabout. It was impressive how many people were in audience from the start;

One of the interesting part of the main stage was how Ron Baron and others from the Knockabouts did the sound. I didn’t ttalk to the organizers, but this could have been an economy move that proved to be a real plus. There is a recurring problem at events with sound engineerrs who don’t understand acoustic music; Their pub system was strong eought that the music could be heard all the way on the other side of the field. It seemed to work quite well.

I wandered around the grounds. Their vendor area was a bit tight but they seemed to attract good crowd. I wandered up the clan and organization tents and said hello to some familiar faces. I arrived late and had missed the parade of the clans in opening, but still touched base.

I finally worked my way to the Irish Cultural Center tent at far end of the fain grounds. In a sense, the ICC seemed to act as a clan tent for the Irish. I stayed about half hour and helped answer questions about Irish name history along with July O’Nahar (Desert Shamrock) and Gaelan O’Ryan (graphic artist for the ICC). While Mary Moriarty was out.

The games had a shuttle bus to take people to the top of the hill to go to the second stage. I stayed to take pictures of the dancers. The first group was the Royal Country Dancers followed by highland dancers combining two schools. I don’t know much about Scottish dancing, but I enjoyed their shows. One of the Scottish performances included some four year olds.

I did not stay for the pipe bands because I wanted to back to hear Tom Thomas. He does a wide variety of Celtic material including Welsh. When he did a Welsh lullaby, John Good joined him to sing in Welsh.

Tom was joined on stage by the “Celtic Cloggers” who did clogging to Celtic music. They did a very entertaining show and I expect they will get invited to some other festivals.

I had to leave early, but I came away impressed by their overall show. I had a good time.
