1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- FLAGSTAFF SEISIUN MOVES TO CHARLY’S

George-

Kari

--- GAELIC SPORTS BROADCASTS AT DUBLINER

We are trying to get the Gaelic Football and Hurling games to be shown at the Dubliner Irish Pub again this year but don’t know if there is enough interest. The cost is $200 per person to get in for the whole season (usually Sundays but some Saturdays – it runs from May through September). Otherwise it is $25 entry fee per game. We would to know if there will be enough people that are willing to pay for the season or at least will be coming for a game here and there as last year we had a difficult time covering the entire cost of getting the games aired. Please email or call Johnny McGuinness by week of May 16 to let him know if you are interested. We’d also appreciate it if you would forward this email or message to any of your friends/coworkers/people you know that may like to watch the games.

Games began Sunday, May 18

7:30 – 9:00pm, Saturday, July 26 th

Admission: Free!

Celtic duo Oceans Apart with special guests Jane Hilton (fiddle) and Ryan Bowman (percussion), in collaboration with The McTeggart Irish Dancers and The Phoenix Pipe Band , present an evening of Irish, Scottish, Welsh and North American traditional dance and music.

There have been increasing efforts over the past few years by national and local organizations such as the Irish Cultural Center, Welsh League of Arizona and area Caledonian and Celtic societies to involve the various ancient nations of the British Isles and Ireland in cooperative endeavors. The Trans-Celtic Gala is something of a milestone in this area. Attendees will be treated to Irish step dancing, Scottish pipe and drums, Welsh and American song (ancient, modern, thoughtful and hilarious), in a non-stop succession that will keep you wondering what will come next.

Greetings,

By now many have received the most recent Comhaltas update from Mary Hill-Connor. We are so excited about our first general meeting at the Irish Cultural Center on Fri, June 27th. It will be a grand time!

Topics we cover will include how we work with other Irish organizations. We have our first opportunity coming up! We would like to show our support in helping with a volunteer opportunity answering phones at KAET during pledge week. We can team up with the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee on the evening of Thur, June 5th from 5:45 until 10:00 PM when the Celtic Thunder segment will be aired. I've answered phones for television fundraising before and it's really a blast!

Volunteers need to be available and at the KAET television studios (located on the campus of ASU) from 5:45 P.M. until approximately 10:00 P.M. (although I heard it may not run quite that long).

If you are interested, please let us know and we'll get you further details! cyndy@fourpeaksirisharts.org

4. MEMO FROM CJA - LOFT ON SAT

Dear Fans,

It has been 2 years since we last performed a full show and we have missed you! There have been many changes in our lives and after deciding that CJA is worth keeping alive, we have spent this time reinventing who we are as a band and writing new songs to fit.

So……. come and see us On Sat, May 24th, 7:00 pm at The Loft, Tempe, Arizona. $5:00 cover (if you’re broke then come anyway!) with proceeds going to the Child Crisis Center.

Visit our website and listen to our new song, “For Any Fate”, and then for a healthy dose of teen angst listen to “Anger” written and performed by Krystle. .. www.cjaonline.com/fanpage.htm

See you on Sat and don’t forget to BRING A FRIEND!

CJA (Krystle, Joanne and Leiticia)

5. MEMO FROM TONY NORRIS

Dear George,

When I awoke yesterday morning I found four or five inches of heavy wet snow shrouding everything! The high temp the day before had been 69 degrees. Sue and Timber [Ruth's boyfriend: it's a long story] had just finished tilling and fertilizing her garden and she was grinning like a Cheshire cat thinking about the moist receptive bed waiting for the seeds she will be planting this weekend.

It's been a busy couple of weeks. I was a featured artist for the 11th Northern Arizona Book Festival and the keynote speaker for the Northern Arizona University Young Authors Festival. Sue and I slipped off to our cabin on the Sea of Cortez for a week. We watched a young humped-back whale from our porch. It looked like a VW bus with a tail as it repeatedly leaped clear of the water and crashed back down in great splashes.

Bill Burke and I played music for a wonderful production of Canyon Movement's THE QUILTS OF GEES BEND, dances inspired by the the beautiful quilts and their makers from the little Alabama backwater of Gees Bend. The show will repeat during NAU's Quilt Festival July 14th.

Check it out at www.canyonmovementcompany.org .

This weekend, May 17-18 at 2pm I appeared at the Arizona Folklore Preserve in lovely Ramsey Canyon near Sierra Vista "Where Arizona's songs, legends, poetry, and myths are collected, presented for audiences of today, and preserved for the enrichment of future generations." Read all about the preserve at http://www.arizonafolklore.com/index.htm . Seating is very limited so reservations are recomended -- call (520)378-6165.

On May 30-31 I return to Salt Lake City's Thanksgiving Point for the Utah Lamb and Wool Festival with SONGS AND STORIES OF THE SHEEP CAMP. [www.thanksgivingpoint.com/ ]

My grandson Noah Aldridge joined me recently on FLAGNEWS to help me sing Froggie Went A Courtin'. check it out at flgnews.com/dates/050208/tony.htm .

Be well my friends,
Tony

--- HISTORY & FACTS:

Phoenix, AZ ~ It’s the Second Annual Bloomin’ Beerfest, a celebration that combines the fine old Irish tradition of Bloomsday with the fine new American tradition of a beer tasting. Co-sponsored by the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation and the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, the event will mark the 104th anniversary of Leopold Bloom's fictional journey through the streets of Dublin in the James Joyce novel, Ulysses. Bloom’s journey included stops at more than a few pubs. At the Bloomin’ Beerfest the available brews will originate with fifteen of Arizona’s top craft brewers.

Bloomsday is celebrated throughout the world by Irish people and Joyce fans alike. The name “Bloomsday” derives from Leopold Bloom, the novel’s Jewish protagonist. He is accompanied, among others, by Stephen Dedalus, a young writer and Joyce’s alter ego; June 16 was the day in 1904 on which Ulysses was set.

Following tradition, Arizona’s 2008 Bloomsday celebration will feature dramatic readings from Ulysses, presented in the Cultural Center’s authentic stone cottage. The wares of about a dozen of Arizona’s premier craft brewers and the energetic music of The Chuckawalla Rhythm Kings will be housed in the Center’s Great Hall. The Chucksters, voted Yuma’s Best Band three years running, are a premier pub band, known to throw in the bawdy lyrics and frequent toasts designed to keep a beer drinker happy.

The Hall will also ring with two sets of traditional and contemporary Irish and Scottish tunes performed by The Fiddlers of the Academy, led by Jane Hilton. This diverse group includes students of all ages brought together by their passion for Celtic music. Students travel from throughout the valley and outlying communities to study and play together in The Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies housed at the Irish Cultural Center. Irish and festival food will be available for purchase.

The price of Bloomin’ Beerfest tickets includes admission to the event, 16 tickets which can be presented to taste the wares of participating craft brewers, and a souvenir tasting mug. Presale tickets can be purchased online for $25 from May 5 through June 5 at www.azbrewguild.com ($35 at the door). Beer tasting ticket sales are limited to 500 persons. Non-beerfest admission to the Bloomsday celebration is $10 at the gate.

The Proceeds of this event benefit the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation (ICLF), the 501(c) 3 corporation that operates the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix in partnership with the City of Phoenix. The ICLF operates the Center and its educational and cultural programs to preserve and showcase Irish culture for the education and enjoyment of the people of Arizona.

ICLF’s partner in this event, the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, is a statewide organization of small brewers dedicated to producing quality ales and lagers. They also produce events to familiarize the public with the fine brews produced by their members. Event sponsors include the 2008 Arizona Irish Festival, Barmigo.com, and the Best Western Hotel Downtown Phoenix.
