4. FIRST ANNUAL BLOOMIN' BEERFEST ON SAT. JUNE 16 AT ICC
Irish Cultural Center
Advance Tickets - $25
5 PM to 10 PM
On Saturday, June 16, at 5pm, the Irish Cultural Center, in downtown Phoenix, will open its gates for Arizona's First Annual Bloomin' Beerfest, a unique event that combines the fine old Irish tradition of Bloomsday with the fine new American tradition of a beer tasting. Co-sponsored by the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation and the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, the event will mark the 103rd anniversary of Leopold Bloom's fictional journey through the streets of Dublin in the James Joyce novel novel, Ulysses . Bloom's journey included stops at more than a few pubs. At Arizona 's first Bloomin' Beerfest the available brews will originate with twenty of Arizona 's top craft brewers, rather than with the brewers of Irish beers and ales.
Bloomsday is celebrated in Ireland and throughout the world by Irish people and Joyce fans alike. The name “Bloomsday” derives from Leopold Bloom, the novel's protagonist; June 16 was the day in 1904 on which the events in Ulysses were set. In the novel, Bloom travels around Dublin meeting fascinating characters and making full use of the city's pubs. To literary and Joyce lovers around the world, Bloom represents both the Everyman of modern society and the heroic Ulysses of Homer's great epic poem, The Odyssey.
Arizona 's 2007 Bloomsday celebration will feature the talents of local actresses who will perform traditional readings from Ulysses, such as “Molly's Lament,” throughout the evening. Expect to see Molly's coffin enshrined in the stone cottage at the heart of the Irish Cultural Center . Live music will lighten the mood and traditional Irish and festival food will be available for purchase.
Music will be provided by Oceans Apart, which features Steve Colby on vocals, guitar, banjo, and Irish bouzouki and John Good on vocals, flute, whistle and Welsh bagpipes.
The price of Bloomin' Beerfest tickets includes admission to the event, 16 tickets which can be presented to taste the wares of participating craft brewers, and a souvenir beer mug. Presale tickets can be purchased online for $25 from May 24 through June 14 at www.azbrewguild.com ($35 at the door). Beer tasting ticket sales are limited to 750 persons. “ Readings only” tickets are offered at $5 and can be purchased online, at the Irish Cultural Center and at the gate. Children under 6 years of age will be admitted free of charge.
The Proceeds of this event benefit the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation (ICLF), the 501(c)3 corporation that operates the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix in partnership with the City of Phoenix. The ICLF operates the Center and its educational and cultural programs to preserve and showcase Irish culture for the education and enjoyment of the people of Arizona.
ICLF's partner in this event, the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, is a statewide organization of small brewers dedicated to producing quality ales and lagers. They also produce events to familiarize the public with the fine brews produced by their members.

8. MEMO FROM IRISH FOUNDATION
JUNE MEETING
Our June meeting will be on the 6th at the ICC, 1106 N. Central, Phoenix, starting at 7:00 PM. We will be deciding when to have our July meeting. Our normal date would be the 4th so we will move it to a later date depending on when the floor of The Great Hall is going to be replaced. We'll also be making plans for Christmas in July.
IRISH BRUNCH
There was a small turnout for the brunch at Rula Bula on May 20 but everyone enjoyed the delicious food and a chance to visit. We'll be planning another get together at R. T. O'Sullivans or Skeptical Chymist later in the summer.

9. LETTER FROM EAST DURHAM, NEW YORK
[EDITOR’S NOTE: Leslie Dykeman wrote to me asking about our ceili at the ICC on June 22. He mentioned he’s from East Durham which hosts a couple of major festivals and workshops].
For such a little town - East Durham gets quite a crowd!
I'm not a musician - though I did buy a fiddle when my son left for college
- but found that I really have no ear - and coudnt pick up the tunes! In the evenings there are many seisuns which are hosted by the local pubs - and there are MANY - all in one very tiny geographic area - this helps to keep the festival contained (and of course this area of NY is home to many people from "the city" who vacation up here). also in the evenings the pubs not holding the sessions hold set dancing - one bar per night. They are very crowded and there is are a significant number of set dancing locals up here - Boston 2.5 hour drive, Hartford area NYC and northern nj and the island all feed dancers - and Kingston and Albany have set dancing groups. The Albany group meets on Tuesday nights (I have a conflict) and gets at least two sets - for dancing - taped music.
Of course now that it's online (isn’t everything!) you can get to see the teachers - who pretty much return year after year. The last day of the festival - on a saturday - there are dance demonstrations - by the local dance schools (we have three), set dancing, and an all day/evening concert.
Cherish the Ladies have been there twice!
If you were to come - I would suggest Southwest Airlines to Albany - NOT NYC - you would need a car to get there - and you would need to bring 4 seasons of clothing! Our weather is UNPREDICTABLE! The hotels I believe all include breakfast and dinner and I think that they assign you to a table for the week! and they are quaint places - no holiday inns here!
Its maybe a 30 - 40 minute drive from Albany - IF you wanted to commute (HA gas was $3.19 at the pump yesterday!) You'll like the change of scenery - lawns, trees, hills, and enjoy the ride - frost heaves, construction, guard rails!!!
The people are all very friendly -
Patrick O'Dea used to come every year from Ireland to teach - but this festival runs right after the Willie Clancy festival and Patrick says that he is too tired afterwards. Patrick who is a very good dancer (sean nos) and teacher makes a pilgramage to the states in Feb/March and teaches Albany, NY, Philly, Washington and LA or SF. You might want to think about having him stop in your area (and he doesnt drive!!!)
A set dancing group is very hard to put together - as of course you need 8 people - and that means 4 people who are either men or are willing to dance the men's part (which I can do for SOME dances). Of course that helps when you need to fill in a set at a dance cause you can usually find a place on the dance floor - everyone ALWAYS NEEDS A MAN!
There is a local music and dance weekend run at the Nevele (old name) run by a woman named Gertrude Byrne - who also hosts a summer festival in Leeds ny (right down the road from East Durham). This festival (nevele) is mostly entertainment type music - not seisuns - and in another part of the hotel - non stop dancing. The first year I attended the Killefenora Ceili Band played and we wound up getting an exercise high dancing to them. Totally spoiled by dancing to the best first!!!
I dont know if you are from the east coast (so maybe I am being elementary about what I am telling you and you know this already!).
I'll try to be in touch when I get to town. If anyone from you org is coming here for any of the festivals I will be more than happy to answer any questions, give directions, etc etc etc.
There is also a very large dance festival in saratoga (www.danceflurry.org) and there is always a set dancing class there. It doesnt usually feed many people to our group but take a look at what's offered. I manage the advance ticket sales. Again the same offer of hospitality extends. This one you DONT have to pack for 4 seasons - it's in February. Well, uh the main dance hall has so many people dancing that we've been told to turn off the heat - and we don’t even have it on!
