1. OUT AND ABOUT
------------------------------------------------------------------
--- FIDDLE CLASS DRESS REHEARSAL AT JUNE 5 FIRST FRIDAY
------------------------------------------------------------------
FOOD - Friday, June 5, is First Friday at the Irish Cultural Center This month's menu includes chicken fajitas with onions, peppers, tortillas, sour cream and salsa with a delicious flan custard for dessert.
FIDDLE CLASS DRESS REHEARSAL - That evening, our very own Academy fiddlers will be rehearsing for their performance at the Blooming Beerfest. Come by at 6:30 and give a sneak peek at these premiere performers.
SEISIUN:- There will be an Irisih seisiun starting a little after 7:00 PM.
ARTIST - Our artist of the month is Graeme Lithgow. His approach is to acknowledge that he not only creates a reality framed in the borders of his work, but that the artwork also changes the current reality we all live in, and adds to it. “The work I make changes my life by being created, and by being. My work affects the environment surrounding it directly, and the consciousness of the world as a whole. My goal is growth, and change. I hope you can feel what I have done.”

--- FESTIVAL DIRECTORY UPDATED
------------------------------------------------------------------
The directory of Festivals and Fairs has been updated through September. http://www.azirishmusic.com/festivals.htm. Our directory is considered by an association of festival organizers to be the most comprehensive list of IRISH festivals (outside of St. Patrick’s Day). There is also a prestty good list of Scottish and “Celtic” events, but it’s quite as comprehensive.
Keeping this directory up to date is a bit of a challenge. Festivals are routinely being started or cnelled and sometimes they are radically reschuled. I originally started this directory with the hope of assisting bands looking for places to go on tour. Check below with on the schedule of Oceans Aparrt who has a very busy summer for an example of what CAN be done. Of course it helps that they are very very good and can travel.

HISTORY & FACTS:
Phoenix, AZ ~ It’s the Third Annual Bloomin’ Beerfest, a celebration that combines the fine old Irish tradition of Bloomsday with the fine new American tradition of a beer tasting. Co-sponsored by the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation and the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, the event will mark the 105th anniversary of Leopold Bloom's fictional journey through the streets of Dublin in the James Joyce novel, Ulysses. Bloom’s journey included stops at more than a few pubs. At the Bloomin’ Beerfest, the available brews will originate with a dozen or more of Arizona’s top craft brewers. The event will kick-off at 7pm, on Saturday June 6, when The Phoenix Pipe Band leads guests into the Irish Cultural Center grounds in downtown Phoenix.
Bloomsday is celebrated throughout the world by Irish people and Joyce fans alike. The name “Bloomsday” derives from Leopold Bloom, the novel’s Jewish protagonist. He is accompanied, among others, by Stephen Dedalus, a young writer and Joyce’s alter ego; June 16 was the day in 1904 on which Ulysses was set. True to the Bloomsday tradition, readings from Ulysses will be offered in the Center’s stone cottage. Often cited as the greatest novel in the English language, Ulysses is definitely geared to an adult audience with its bawdy themes and salty language, so admission to the Cottage Readings will be limited to guests 18 years and older.
The Brid Dower Band will be performing throughout the evening in the Center’s Great Hall, surrounded by the majority of the participating brewers. Brid Dower is one of the finest performers of Irish music today and when performing with Tom Bertling, Kevin Mauch, and Ryan Bowman as her namesake band, she offers the full gamut of Irish music from driving rock to the best of traditional tunes.
The Cultural Center grounds will also ring with two sets of traditional and contemporary Irish and Scottish tunes performed by The Fiddlers of the Academy, led by Jane Hilton. This diverse group includes students of all ages brought together by their passion for Celtic music. Students travel from throughout the valley and outlying communities to study and play together in The Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies housed at the Irish Cultural Center. Irish and festival food will be available for purchase.
The price of Bloomin’ Beerfest tickets includes admission to the event, 16 tickets which can be presented to taste the wares of participating craft brewers, and a souvenir tasting mug. Presale tickets can be purchased online for $25 from May 4 through June 6 at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/66128 ($35 at the door). Beer tasting ticket sales are limited to 500 persons. Non-beerfest admission to the Bloomsday celebration is $10 at the gate. Additional tickets for beer or food will be available for purchase on site.
The Proceeds of this event benefit the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation (ICLF), the 501(c) 3 corporation that operates the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix in partnership with the City of Phoenix. The ICLF operates the Center and its educational and cultural programs to preserve and showcase Irish culture for the education and enjoyment of the people of Arizona

3. WELSH LEAGUE OF ARIZONA JUNE MEETING ON SAT JUNE 6
Saturday, June 6th 2009
12 – 2 P.M.
Irish Cultural Center
1106 North Central Ave, Phoenix
Did a Welsh Prince land and settle in America before Christopher Columbus?
Our June meeting will show evidence on both sides of the debate and allow us all to make our minds up if Welsh settlers did join the Mandan Native American tribe.
Here is some background information about this amazing historical fact or fiction!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madoc
As usual, we can bring some favorite treats to share. Beverages will be provided.
----------------------------------------------------------------
All Are Welcome
Welsh League of Arizona is an inclusive group. If you are interested in the culture of Wales and enjoy a good time relaxing and mingling with lively people you are welcome. You do not have to be of Welsh ancestry or speak Welsh – but you might be surprised at how many are learning in Arizona.
Welsh League of Arizona is proud to be a member of the Arizona Celtic Cultural Association. This group promotes co-operation among all the Celtic groups in the state. See more at their web site: azcelts.org

RANDAL BAYS
“The Music is what it's all about. I've been playing Irish fiddle for about thirty years, still finding it interesting and still hearing something mysterious in the music. I've been very fortunate - especially for someone born in America - to have gotten to know and spend time with so many of the greatest Irish musicians. I enjoy bringing the music to audiences, wherever they might be, in the form of concerts and workshops, festivals, music camps, etc.
I do concerts as a Solo Performer, often in a house concert or small venue setting. For this kind of concert I usually play both unaccompanied fiddle tunes and finger-style guitar solos. I try to give a bit of background and context to the music, and make it an enjoyable listening experience. “ Randall Bays
5. MEMO FROM TONY NORRIS
Dear George ,
I'm delighted by the daily rains that have visited Flagstaff for over a week. This is unprecedented for the Northland in May! I looked to the peaks just before dusk last night and saw a snowcap on Mount Humphreys glistening like a new dime. Sue's garden has a big smile on it's face-- the dozen plus varieties of heirloom tomato plants are ready to set records of their own. The black silky hen is setting on a clutch of eight eggs. Look for developments on June 17th. A weiner pig is in residence in the old hog pen. "Get along little piggie-- You'll be bacon in September."
I'll be kicking off Sharlot Hall Museum's Wicked Wednesdays concert series on June 3rd, 7:30pm at the amphitheater at 415 West Gurley, Prescott. Megan Buchanan Cherry will be my special guest. We'll be singing cowboy, Irish and folktunes that tell stories of loss, love and the Long Journey. If it rains we'll move inside. Admission $5 for Museum members $7 general.
On June 5th Bill Burke and I will present an outdoor concert at Epiphany Episcopal Church [corner of Elm and Beaver in Flagstaff] in their Meditation Garden at the rear of the church. Gates open at 5pm --bring a picnic!- and the concert will start at 5:30. If children are present I'll start with a brief kid's show and then activities are available for the wee ones. Bill and I will perform tunes and stories from our Down in the Holler CD. I'll tell my much requested story of Henry Baker and the outhouse. The beautiful garden is a fine setting for this evening of fun and music. Be prepared for cooling as the sun sets. If the rain falls we'll move inside. Admission is by donation and the Epiphany Youth Mission Trip will benefit from your generosity. Info at 928 774 2911 office@epiphanyaz.org
I hope to see you soon.
Warmly,
Tony

8. LYNN ROBERTS RECEIVES BEA FOGELMAN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
May has been an exciting month for Valley based entertainer Lynn Roberts. The singer, musician, band leader and celebrity impersonator was presented with the Bea Fogelman REEL AWARD for Lifetime Achievement for his impersonation of Bob Hope at the International Celebrity Impersonators Convention. The convention was held at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas on May 24.
Each year agents and members of Celebrity Impersonators International nominate and vote to select the celebrity impersonator they feel most deserving of the prestigious award. The late Bea Fogelman was a former big band singer who went on to found the Entertainment Network. Through her efforts the impersonator industry has developed and flourished.
Roberts is well respected in the industry for his impressions of Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Jimmy Durante and others. His one man shows are popular with audiences across the country.
“I knew I was nominated for the award but I was completely shocked when my
name was announced,” Roberts said. “The competition was all very top notch. When I went up on stage I was very moved emotionally. I said a few words about how much I had respected Bea Fogelman and how she had helped me with my career. I also said that since I had open heart surgery a few weeks ago there was a point after the operation when I wondered if I would really be able to perform again and that winning the Lifetime Achievement Award was a great validation. It made me feel that I have many years left to my career. I will be going on tour of the Midwest in June.”
Lynn Roberts has been performing professionally for over 50 years but he started doing impressions even before that, entertaining his family and friends by imitating people they knew. During high school and through college he worked with a family trio consisting of himself, his mother and father, who were both excellent musicians. Later he went on the road with regional and nationally known big bands, becoming first chair sax with the Wayne King Orchestra before going out on his own.
Although he still performs with his own bands, Roberts concentrates much of his time on his tribute shows. His next show will be on June 13 in St. Paul, Minnesota where he will entertain at a large veteran’s rally on the State Capital grounds.
