Hi Everyone,

The campout was great! A little cold Saturday night but it was great fun! Thanks Ruth, for setting it up. Marni, you did a great job hosting. We will miss you when you move away. We loved it there so much that we stayed over an extra night. Sunday and Monday it was beautiful weather. We were glad we stayed an extra day.

History & Facts:

Phoenix, AZ ~ It’s the Second Annual Bloomin’ Beerfest, a celebration that combines the fine old Irish tradition of Bloomsday with the fine new American tradition of a beer tasting. Co-sponsored by the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation and the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, the event will mark the 104th anniversary of Leopold Bloom's fictional journey through the streets of Dublin in the James Joyce novel, Ulysses. Bloom’s journey included stops at more than a few pubs. At the Bloomin’ Beerfest the available brews will originate with fifteen of Arizona’s top craft brewers.

Bloomsday is celebrated throughout the world by Irish people and Joyce fans alike. The name “Bloomsday” derives from Leopold Bloom, the novel’s Jewish protagonist. He is accompanied, among others, by Stephen Dedalus, a young writer and Joyce’s alter ego; June 16 was the day in 1904 on which Ulysses was set.

Following tradition, Arizona’s 2008 Bloomsday celebration will feature dramatic readings from Ulysses, presented in the Cultural Center’s authentic stone cottage. The wares of about a dozen of Arizona’s premier craft brewers and the energetic music of The Chuckawalla Rhythm Kings will be housed in the Center’s Great Hall. The Chucksters, voted Yuma’s Best Band three years running, are a premier pub band, known to throw in the bawdy lyrics and frequent toasts designed to keep a beer drinker happy.

The Hall will also ring with two sets of traditional and contemporary Irish and Scottish tunes performed by The Fiddlers of the Academy, led by Jane Hilton. This diverse group includes students of all ages brought together by their passion for Celtic music. Students travel from throughout the valley and outlying communities to study and play together in The Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies housed at the Irish Cultural Center. Irish and festival food will be available for purchase.

The price of Bloomin’ Beerfest tickets includes admission to the event, 16 tickets which can be presented to taste the wares of participating craft brewers, and a souvenir tasting mug. Presale tickets can be purchased online for $25 from May 5 through June 5 at www.azbrewguild.com ($35 at the door). Beer tasting ticket sales are limited to 500 persons. Non-beerfest admission to the Bloomsday celebration is $10 at the gate.

The Proceeds of this event benefit the Irish Cultural and Learning Foundation (ICLF), the 501(c) 3 corporation that operates the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix in partnership with the City of Phoenix. The ICLF operates the Center and its educational and cultural programs to preserve and showcase Irish culture for the education and enjoyment of the people of Arizona.

ICLF’s partner in this event, the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, is a statewide organization of small brewers dedicated to producing quality ales and lagers. They also produce events to familiarize the public with the fine brews produced by their members. Event sponsors include the 2008 Arizona Irish Festival, Barmigo.com, and the Best Western Hotel Downtown Phoenix.

REVIEWS OF RANDALL BAYS CD’S
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

THE IRISH TIMES, DUBLIN - REVIEW OF "HOUSE TO HOUSE" **** (FOUR STARS)

Irish American musicians like Solas’s Seamus Egan have long impressed us with their virtuosity, but we’ve had little exposure to American musicians of an earlier generation whose ownership of the music is as solid as if they were scions of Sliabh Luachra. Randal Bays and Roger Landes conjure a commanding presence on fiddle and bouzouki, looping through an eclectic repertoire on this recording of a quartet of house concerts from Seattle to Massachusetts. Bays’s fiddle is deliciously woody, reminiscent of Padraig O’Keeffe, particularly on the latter’s The Lament for O’Donnell. Landes exerts the lightest of touches on bouzouki, pitching his subtle contribution brilliantly on the set bookended by Delia Crowley’s Reel and Sean Sa Ceo. The occasional foot tap and squeaky chair add to the party atmosphere.

FIDDLER MAGAZINE (NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA) - REVIEW OF "THE SALMON'S LEAP"

Over the years, Randal Bays has quietly but methodically become one of the best fiddlers working in the Irish tradition in America. His latest CD, The Salmon's Leap, is a collection of old tunes and modern compositions in the old style that were recorded over the course of a year in his home studio. Bays is joined on these 16 tracks by a variety of musicians, including accordionist John Williams, pianist Dave Marshall, and guitarist Gerry O'Beirne, who adds a tropical touch to the proceedings by playing ukulele on the title track. Bays is a gifted composer, and tracks such as the haunting slow air "Lament for the Great Forests" and his various jigs and marches show that he has learned to write tunes that hew to the traditional styles, while still retaining a personal sound. Not only is Randal Bays a fiddler of rare talent, he is a fine guitarist as well, and his thoughtful readings of O'Carolan's tunes "Maurice O'Connor/Carolan's Welcome" beautifully capture the blind harper's spirit. His nimble fingers are driven by a passionate heart, and that gives the music on The Salmon's Leap a clarity that all fiddlers aspire to, but only the very best achieve. (With guests John Williams, Leo MacNamara, Gerry O'Beirne, Dave Marshall, Stanley Greenthal, Joel Bernstein, Dan Compton, Duke Whitehead)

4. BRAZEN HEADS VIDEO SUCCEEDING IN COUNTRY INTERNET COMPETITION

Greetings all!

We don't normally do this but.....

On a bit of a lark, the band entered several music and/or video contests over the past couple months. We've heard exactly nothing from all of them......bar one.

The one happens to be a country music video contest which we entered because they got our email address from somewhere or other and solicited us. We figured, hey its free and they found us so why not....

Long and short is it's week two (out of 8) and we've made it to the top ten. They are going to be showing Who's Yer Paddy on their show this week. The request, and mostly this is because we are all still falling over with laughter about making the top 10 on a country music station....is to go to their website and vote. Also to tune in this week and watch our video on their show. Details are below.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Website: Great American Country

Click into The Next GAC Star link on the bottom left of that home page. You'll need to go create a login and click into The Next GAC star contest in order to vote for us. It's a head-to-head style voting system where you'll have to wait for us to come up in order to vote.

The show is: The Next GAC Star -- www.gactv.com

Our video, along with others in the top 10 will be aired this week on the Great American Country show. Those of you with Cox cable can see it (Tuesday June 3rd) at 6pm.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: The website keeps setting up head to head. Competition between candidates that aren’t the Brazen Heads. My suggestion is to use the back arrow and then go to the page. Every time the choice page is opened, it has a new choice. It’s a pain, but better than listening to a bunch of country artists (In my opinion)]

5. TRANS-CELTIC GALA ON SAT. JULY 26TH

Trans-Celtic Gala Chandler Center for the Arts,
250 N. Arizona Avenue
Chandler, Arizona 85225
info@chandlercenter.org
480.782.2683

When: 7:30-9:00pm, Saturday, July 26th

Admission: Free!

Celtic duo Oceans Apart with special guests Jane Hilton (fiddle) and Ryan Bowman (percussion), in collaboration with The McTeggart Irish Dancers and The Phoenix Pipe Band, present an evening of Irish, Scottish, Welsh and North American traditional dance and music.

There have been increasing efforts over the past few years by national and local organizations such as the Irish Cultural Center, Welsh League of Arizona and area Caledonian and Celtic societies to involve the various ancient nations of the British Isles and Ireland in cooperative endeavors. The Trans-Celtic Gala is something of a milestone in this area. Attendees will be treated to Irish step dancing, Scottish pipe and drums, Welsh and American song (ancient, modern, thoughtful and hilarious), in a non-stop succession that will keep you wondering what will come next.

8. MEMO FROM TONY NORRIS

Dear Georgr,

You may not have known Utah Phillips but I counted him as one my dearest friends. He passed away last night of congestive heart failure in his home in Nevada City, California. He penned timeless songs like The Goodnight Loving Trail and The Green Rolling Hills of West Virginia. He was a tireless champion of the working man and gave voice to the concerns of the downtrodden--he was a proud member of the Wobblies. His experiences in Korea made him a confirmed pacifist.

Years ago I met him when he played for a tiny audience at Charlies Pub. I told him if he came to Flagstaff again to call me and I would see to it that he got a larger audience. He did and I did and and a great friendship was born. He always stayed in my home when he played Flag. He was a mentor to me in both music and storytelling and he became a hero to me in the truest sense.

I remember booking him into Flagstaff High School years ago and hearing him address the kids thusly:

"When they tell you you are our greatest natural resource just look at what they've done to our other natural resources..... and flee to the hills!"

He was playing here about five years ago when he became sweaty and his heart began acting up. I took him to my internist for an EKG. The writing was on the wall. His life changed rapidly. His touring was greatly reduced. He remained active producing a radio show --Loafers Glory, collaborating with Ani Di franco on a Grammy nominated album, getting arrested for protesting the war and starting a homeless shelter[www.hospitalityhouseshelter.org ] in Grass Valley.

Just about a week ago he wrote a letter to family and friends about his journey. Let me share just an excerpt here:

“I spent a long time finding my way--couches, floors, big towns, small towns, marginal pay (folk wages). But I found that people seemed to like what I was doing. The folk music family took me in, carried me along, and taught me the value of song far beyond making a living. It taught me that I don't need wealth, I don't need power, and I don't need fame. What I need is friends, and that's what I found--everywhere--and not just among those on the stage, but among those in front of the stage as well.

Now I can no longer travel and perform; overnight our income vanished. But all of those I had sung for, sung with, or boarded with, hearing about my condition, stepped in and rescued us. I can't tell you how grateful I am to be part of this great caring community that, for the most part, functions close to the ground at a sub-media level, a community that has always cared for its own. We will be forever grateful for your help during this hard time.

The future? I don't know. But I have songs in a folder I've never paid attention to, and songs inside me waiting for me to bring them out. Through all of it, up and down, it's the song. It's always been the song."

Join me in celebrating the life of this wonderful, witty, irrereverent man. I'll miss him like Hell.

Tony
