1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- FINAL PREPARATIONS IN PLACE FOR BLOOMIN BEER FEST ON SAT JUNE 16

In addition to the beer tasting, food, and music by Oceans Apart; there will be readings form James Joyce’s Ulysses by Naomi Barnes and Keriann Esperson.

The event will go from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Advance tickets are $25 while day of the event tickets are $35. For people interested in the event without the beer, admission is $10.

--- PADDY’S PEG LEG START TIME CHANGED TO 7:00 PM

Paddy’s Peg Leg is the Valley’s newest Irish band and will playing at RT O’Sullivan’s (Bell Rd just off 59th Ave) every Sun. from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

I caught their show on Sun and they sounded good (although struggling with colds). The duo of Dan Agle and Chris Floyd are new to Irish scene as performers, but have a wide repertoire from Whiskey in the Jar to Stan Roger’s material. I’m hoping some Irish music fans will drop in to give them support so we can keep Irish music in the far west side.

--- IRISH GATES FUNDRAISER A BIG SUCCESS

I’m not sure what the final tally was, but they raised over $8000 for a new gate at the Irish Cultural Center. In addition to admission, food, and money from the drinks, there was an impressive number of items at the silent auction and the winner of the 50/50 raffle earned more than $600.

There were a lot of people involved including Jimmy O’Connor and O’Connor’s Pub, John Good, the Fire and Police Emerald Societies (they made chili burritos), the Arizona Irish Music Society, the Irish Cultural Center, the Arizona Colleens, and an enormous number of other volunteers.

The program included an opening by piper Owen Keating, and music by Pat McCrossan, Iain Walinck, John McMorrow, Oceans Apart, Galway Bridge (Brian O’Carroll and Robin Fisher), Shay Veno and Billy Brett, plus Tom Connor joined John Good and Steve Colby to play for some dancers from the Bracken School. The Phoenix Scottish Pipe Band performed and were followed by the Celtic Dance Academy. Pat McCrossan, John Good, Shay Veno and myself led the sing-a-long with special guest Declan Fox who did the Dolly Parton song . Besides performing, Pat McCrossan was the MC and set up and ran the sound system.

The limerick and humorous poen competition, led by Bob Nelson was huge hit. The winner was Patty McCrossan.

Perhaps the best part about this event was the strong support from the entire Irish community. I was especially glad to see long missing old friends like Ken Mulqueen (formerly of the McMorrows and Shanachie) and his father Pat Mulqueen (former President of the Irish Foundation), but there are innumerable others to numerous to name.

I want to thank everyone for their support.

2. DIANA GABALDON TO BE AT THE IRISH CULTURAL CENTER ON JUNE 30

Phoenix Arizona. Attention Outlander fans! The Arizona Celtic Cultural Association is proud to bring Diana Gabaldon to the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix Arizona. June is literary month at the Irish Cultural Center with the celebration of Bloomsday and the welcoming of best selling novelist, Diana Gabaldon. The presentation is scheduled for June 30 at 7:30 PM at the Irish Cultural Center, 1106 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix Arizona. Admission is free; donations are being accepted to help fill the Library building fund. The Irish Cultural Center library will be Arizona’s only comprehensive learning annex of Celtic studies and Celtic literature.

Ms. Gabaldon will be speaking about her favored Outlander and Lord John series and the inspirations for which these best sellers have come. The Outlander and Lord John series, popular with the Celtic crowd, tells the story of Jamie Fraser, a Scottish Highlander from the 18th century, and his time-traveling wife, Claire. The latest book in the series is A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The Poisoned Pen will be on hand providing those missing editions for your collection.

For additional information, please contact the Irish Cultural Center at

3. MEMO FROM THE BRAZEN HEADS

Greetings all!

The Brazen Heads will be taking a week off to work on some new music but you can catch them the Dubliner

Friday and Saturday June 8 & 9 at 9pm!

NEWS

Speaking of new music, the band is ambitiously planning on adding a whole new roster of material which you will hear beginning at each gig from now on. We're very excited about the addition of some of these popular songs by bands like Flogging Molly, Young Dubliners, Horslips, Waterboys, The Fury's and....(drum roll brother bonedaddy) The Brazen Heads! Yes that's right, you will begin to hear some original pieces smattered about our sets in preparation for recording later this summer. Come early, come late....you will hear something new in every set.

Speaking of recording...The dates are not etched in stone yet but the band has finally decided to begin working on a recording this summer for a tentative early fall release.

T-Shirts have arrived!! We will be selling our shirts for a mere $15. at gigs from now until we sell out, don't miss out on getting the "original" shirt design as we will be changing it for the next order. Budding graphic artists need apply.

New photos, video and audio clips will begin appearing on the website soon now that things have settled to a dull roar for the band. Be sure to check it often and let us know what you think.

4. MEMO FROM OCEANS APART

June 2007

As we all wait for the hot weather that's the other side of Arizona living, like everyone else, Oceans has begun to think about road trips to places cooler. We'll be visiting Utah, Iowa, Colorado and California, but unlike last year, the trips are of shorter duration, with frequent homecomings.

At the same time -well it's almost become a perennial summer occupation - we are working on our new album (with the working title "Oceans at Sea"), to coincide with our performance on the Star of India in San Diego this September.

Well, stay in the shade and come and see us when you get out of the pool!

6. ZOUKFEST STARTS JUNE 10TH

[EDITOR NOTE:: Zoukfest in neighboring New Mexico has always been treated as being something of “home” event for Arizona due to being within driving distance, strong ties with local musician Rick Boyle, and the Arizona concerts by artistic director Roger Landis. A number of local musicians have attended and all rave about it.]

We're only 10 days away from the Southwest's Premier World Music Camp but there's still time to register for ZoukFest 2007! Don't miss out on the fun!

This year's tuition is an incredible value. Only $430 gets you more than 30 classroom hours in 27 classes taught by 18 world class instructors over 5 days.

Have a tight schedule? Can't take the whole week off from work? You can register for one class and only spend 75 minutes in class per day! This has always been a popular option at ZoukFest. Imagine getting out of the office and singing, or playing the fiddle, or learning West Africa Percussion (drums provided) for an hour and fifteen minutes every day for a week!

If you are a music lover but not a singer or an instrumentalist, you are welcome to join us at our informal staff performances Monday, June 11 through Friday, June 15th at 7pm in O'Shaughnessy Auditorium, Benildus Hall on the campus of the College of Santa Fe, 1600 St. Michael's Drive. Each evening two artists or groups will perform for the students and the public is invited ($10 suggested donation).

Curious? Have questions about ZoukFest World Music Camp? Want to meet the staff? Wondering what the heck a "ZOUK" is? Come to our Orientation and Open House, 7:00-8:30pm Sunday, June 10th, in O'Shaughnessy Auditorium, Benildus Hall on the campus of the College of Santa Fe, 1600 St. Michael's Drive. After a brief orientation we'll answer questions, then the staff will each perform one selection by way of introduction. Then join us at 8:30 for a special performance by Char & Robby Rothschild of Round Mountain.

Make sure and check out all the class descriptions on our website: http://zoukfest.com

While you're there, look at our raffle and buy a ticket for a chance to win one of these gorgeous instruments!

And if you like instruments and the people who build, collect, play and love them, don't miss the 1st Annual New Mexico Instrument Showcase on Saturday, June 16th, from 10am to 5pm.

Special post-ZoukFest Irish music concert by John Carty with Roger Landes, Saturday, June 16th, 7:30pm in O'Shaughnessy Auditorium, Benildus Hall on the campus of the College of Santa Fe, 1600 St. Michael's Drive. Tickets $15 at the door.

We hope to see you there!
