1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- FLAGSTAFF FESTIVALS

One of the things about Arizona in the summer is that while it is too hot to do much in Phoenix, it is a great time of year to go to the mountains. There are four music festivals that will include at least some Irish/Celtic Music:

June 26- 27 - RENAISSANCE IN THE PINES at Fort Tuthill at the Coconino Fair grounds. Their entertainment schedule is not yet set, but several Irish bands are expected to play there. www.renaissanceinthepinesinc.com

July 17 - ARIZONA HIGHLAND CELTIC FESTIVAL at Foxglenn Park, 4200 East Butler Avenue, Flagstaff, AZ 86004 will feature Alex Beaton, Oceans Apart, Wicked Tinkers. www.nachs.info/flagstafffestival.asp

July 30 to Aug 1 - FLAGSTAFF SUMMERFEST Fort Tuthill at the Coconino Fair grounds is run by a man named Frank Maguire who always books at least a few Irish acts. www.888artfest.com/flagstaff/

2. OCEANS APART ON VACATION THIS WEEKEND

Steve will be in Branson Missouri this weekend (something about a banjo, his "old dog blue" [one of our songs], a new hat and boots..... well to tell the truth it's a vacation!)

We'll be back the following Sunday. Cymerwch ofal (take care), Oceans A.

4. GAA SUNDAY SPORTS BROADCASTS

Hi everybody, from this Sunday the Phoenix Gaels will be showing, live, the Irish Football and Hurling Championship games. As they are being shown live there is an early start. Most games start around 6 am or 7am . We will be showing two games most days. There are also a number of Saturday games. The full schedule is at:

Schedule

They are being shown at the Dubliner Irish Pub, which is at the South West corner of 40th Street and Thunderbird, in the Basha's Mall. It is $100 for the entire Championship, or $20 a game. That's great value. Have a look at the schedule and see now many games we are showing. We will soon have the website updated to show the following weeks games.

It's a great way to learn about the game, meet other Irish people and meet other players.

Come down and join in the fun. Tell your friends. Any questions, feel free to email me.

7. CORRECTION: SAN DIEGO IS IN CALIFORNIA

George:

Read this latest newsletter, and a couple of items raised my curiosity so I had to ask:

Why is the San Diego Celtic festival held in Colorado???

How can there be a 1923 Stradivarius violin if Antonio Stradivari lived 1644-1737??

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Pam Asbury-Smith
wanhaole@hotmail.com
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can just see folks hunched over their maps of Colorado now looking for San Diego; maybe the big quake they always talk about is coming and San Diego may wind up in Colorado yet. Go figure.

Fri/ Sat 11th/12th - O'Connor's
Fri/Sat 18th/19th - O'Connor's

[EDITORS NOTE: This memo came in after we went to press last week, so I translated it into past tense.]

SPECIAL NOTES!!!!!!

Hello Folks!

Some of you may have heard the news.... The Clare Voyants filmed a promotional DVD Friday, June 4th, at O'Connor's Irish Pub! A videographer was there to capture a night of energy and enthusiasm.

We will be using this DVD initially to send to Japan. We have a fairly promising proposition lined up for a possible Japanese tour!!!! We are thrilled with the prospect and eager to get the ball rolling. Also, many of the festivals and venues across the country prefer to have DVDs, so we will be able to make the utmost use of our film.

Thanks to all of you who came out to hear and support the Marconias the previous Saturday night as part of The Get Folked Up Series.

Last Saturday, June 5th, Get Folked Up! presented the talented SturFry. Sturgis Waters and Jason fry played their special brand of guitar instrumental music. Sturgis was part of our very first GFU so we are glad to be able to round out the season with his performance.

Sincerely,

The Clare Voyants

10. FRANK MCCOURT HEADLINES GRAND CANYON MUSIC FESTIVAL

Grand Canyon Music Festival presents its 21st Season with nine weekend and mid-week concerts in the cool of the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, and at the Orpheum Theatre in Flagstaff.

Special guest Frank McCourt, Pulitzer-prize winning author of "Angela's Ashes", joins the Newman & Oltman Duo and the Calder Quartet on September 17 and 18, to perform "Laments and Dances from the Irish", composed for them by our old friend Arnold Black, based on celtic themes of the 17th-century Irish poet and troubadour Turlough O'Carolan. The work is a concerto for guitar duo, with Mr. McCourt reading from his books and Irish poetry.

Harmonica wizard Robert Bonfiglio presents his Jazz Nite with a couple of his jazzier friends, Joe Deninzon and Chris Milletari, in Flagstaff on Tuesday, September 21, and at the Canyon on Wednesday, September 22. The last weekend headliners, closing the season on September 24 and 25, are multi-talented, multi instrumentalists Nokuthula Ngwenyama and Melvin Chen, with Festival co-founders flutist Clare Hoffman and Robert Bonfiglio, who perform throughout the series. Make it a mini-vacation: accommodations are available to our patrons in and near the Park. Program and artist details, tickets, lodging and visitor information, and Festival products including renowned Phoenix artist Ed Mell's "Primal Storm/Grand Canyon" poster for 2004 are all available on our website or at the toll-free number.

Tickets: Adults $18 Children/Students $8 (over 6 please)
Contact: 800-997-8285 www.grandcanyonmusicfest.org

September 15, Wednesday- The Michael Newman/Laura Oltman Guitar Duo recital.

September 17, Friday- Frank McCourt, author of "Angela's Ashes", the Newman/Oltman Duo, the Calder Quartet perform Arnold Black's "Laments and Dances, From the Irish".

September 18, Saturday- The Calder Quartet, the Newman/Oltman Duo and Frank McCourt repeat "Laments and Dances, From the Irish".
----------------------------------------------------------
All of our concerts are held in the Shrine of the Ages, Grand Canyon National Park South Rim. Concerts are at 7:30 pm except the first weekend (non-Celtic) which features performances of the compositions of our Native American Composers Apprentice Project students, which begin at 7:00.We will have one concert in Flagstaff, as well. The McCourt concerts will be Friday and Saturday, September 17 and 18, and we expect them to be packed. They will present the "Laments and Dances" both nites, but otherwise the programs will be different. You may wish to stress to your audience that they need to line up hotel rooms quick, as the Park will be sold out- the little overflow village just out of the Park will probably have rooms, and we have some rooms blocked with each of the hotels there. Please see our website- www.grandcanyonmusicfest.org.

LAMENTS AND DANCES, FROM THE IRISH
Celtic Concerto for Guitar Duo and Orchestra
By Arnold Black (1923-2000)

- A little Prelude for Brabizon
- The Father's Lament and Dance
- Carolan's Concerto
- Lord Galwey's Lament and The Cleric's Dance
- Reeling
- The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo

With Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt Reading from Angela's Ashes and 'Tis

Black's delightful suite incorporates themes by the 17th-century blind itinerant harper and composer Turlough O'Carolan-a wildly popular figure amongst lovers of Irish music. This five-movement, 40- minute work features a mix of poignant Irish laments and joyous jigs and reels, plus the infectious writing of Frank McCourt, presented in his own inimitable style. Performed by The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo, America's most widely recorded and acclaimed duo, Laments & Dances brings together for audiences the immense popularity of Celtic music traditions with the broad appeal of the classical guitar.

Reviews of Laments and Dances, from the Irish in Concert

"Using folkish tunes of the Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), the composer has constructed a delightful suite, making idiomatic use of the forces with countrified fiddling and picking."
-The New York Times

"The audience cheered...Newman and Oltman had the good fortune to commission this marvelous piece, which impressed this listener as attractive alike to the general public and to the chamber sophisticate. The piece is brilliantly written and its part-writing incredibly fine. 'Laments and Dances' cries out for a recording."
-The Star-Ledger (NJ)

"I left the sold-out Williams Center full of beans. Newman & Oltman phrased, harmonized and evoked exceptionally. McCourt's marvelously sad, marvelously funny recollection of his infant twin brother's death dovetailed with the sextet's tender, spry version of a Black section inspired by the passing of his sons. McCourt paces, modulates and colors as well as any virtuoso.
-The Morning Call (PA)

Reviews of the Laments and Dances CD

"A revelation to hear." - The Washington Post

"Spirited, informed performances." - American Record Guide

"Newman and Oltman are true musical explorer, and their performances are as electrifying as their choice of repertoire." - On The Air Magazine

11. FLAGSTAFF FOLK FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND

[EDITOR'S NOTE: The following was taken from the Flagstaff Friends of Old Time Music website. www.ffotm.net/folkfest. Some of the Celtic performers include the Knockabouts, Laurie Riley, Rick and Steve, Just Deserts, and the Northern Arizona Bagpipers and Drummers.]

3rd Annual Flagstaff Folk Festival

June 12 - 13, 2004

Directions to the Coconino Center for the Arts The Flagstaff Folk Festival will be at the Coconino Center for the Arts, 2300 N. Fort Valley Rd (Hwy 180 towards the Grand Canyon). Coming into the downtown area from the South on Rte 66 turn left on Humphreys St. (with the sign to Grand Canyon). Go up Humphreys to the stoplight. Turn left on Fort Valley Road. After about 3/4 of a mile, Sechrist Elementary School is on your right. Just past the school, turn right into the Coconino Center for the Arts just before the steam locomotive.

The Flagstaff Folk Festival 2004 will be at the Coconino Center for the Arts, 2300 N. Fort Valley Road. This event is sponsored by the Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music and the 15th Annual Trappings of the American West Exhibition and Festival, a Dry Creek Arts Fellowship production. Admission to the festival is $2.00 per person, with a $7.00 maximum per family. Admission price is good for both days of music, and includes access to The Trappings of the American West exhibit! Join us for live acoustic music by individual and group acts, on multiple stages, along with workshops for playing, song writing, story telling, and more at, quite possibly, the best folk performance venue in the state of Arizona!

The Northern Arizona Bagpipers and Drummers give us a resounding start by performing an authentic Celtic March around the Coconino Center for the Arts driveway at 9:45 on Saturday morning. We hear they will do the very popular march, "Scotland the Brave" in addition to a couple of others. (can't wait to hear the sound of bagpipes bounce off the covered awning area in the front of the Center for the Arts.) Simultaneously, Mark Alexander will open Mark's Kitchen (new this year) at 9:30 for one of his famous pancake breakfasts.

Marks Kitchen will be serving reasonably priced and very tasty food, from 9:30 -6:00 on Saturday and 9:30 - 4:00 on Sunday. We start with a breakfast of pancakes, bacon, sausage, hash browns, pastries, coffee and juice. Lunch items include hotdogs and hamburgers, with veggie options available as well. Dinner features a 'river runner' type Dutch oven dinner on Saturday night. On Sunday, he'll be serving breakfast and lunch.

The music stages open at 10:00 where Laurie Riley will start us off in the center gallery with that wonderful harp music she does as the Jay Beck Band will get us going on the Center stage. Saturday morning includes a contra jam, hosted by our own Just Deserts band. Saturday afternoon has individual performers doing cowboy music in the gallery as bands from out of town include the ever popular Artichoke Sisters, D-Squared, Half Way Home, and Mountain Rain. Local bands scheduled are Harmony Rising, The Porchlights Duo, The Mars Hill Billies, Faint Praise and Cinder Hills.

For the Saturday evening show this year, we are going to funnel down to the main stage at 5:00pm and enjoy several featured acts till around 8pm. Lorraine Rawls will be doing her brand of cowboy music. Tom Tuerff will be featured as our individual performer. And one of our favorite local old timey bands, Desperate Measures, will play us some old-time music. Tony Norris will help us finish up the evening with a musical demonstration of the 'folk process' that will incorporate a number of different performers. The bad news is - all this delightful music will leave you wanting more..... and there IS more on Sunday!

Sunday, again begins in Mark's Kitchen with another pancake breakfast at 9:30. The music starts at 10:00 with that same variety of wonderful folk music only different voices singing it. Gavan Weiser from Phoenix starts off in the Center Gallery while Patty and Alesa open the Art Barn stage as John Scooter Harris host the gospel sing on the Center stage. The Knockabouts lead the line up of local bands that will also included Joan Wyatt and Friends, Heart Prairie, Money Minus and Second Harvest. Some of Sundays scheduled out of town bands are Bight and Childress, The Speisman Family singers, The Back Porch Band, The Close Enough String Band The Mexican Beaded Lizards and The Scott Hallock Trio. The festival will finish up with the Band Scramble at 5pm, followed by, last year's favorite, the Marathon Medley which goes on until ....... well, until they're done!

Flagstaff Folk Festival 2003 was a huge success and we look forward to seeing you all in June 2004!
