1. OUT AND ABOUT

--- BLOOMIN’ BEER FEST A SUCCESS

More than 200 people gathered at the Irish Cultural Center last Saturday for the first annual Bloomin Beer Fest as they tasted samples from eight micro breweries, listened to music by Oceans Apart and readings from James Joyce’s Ulysses.

It was an interesting event to put on. A lot of people came to the Irish Cultural Center for the first time and they seemed to have a great time. In addition to standing around the beer booths, they socialized at the tables, in chairs in front of the cottage, and some just sat in the grass.

In spite of the time of year, the temperature was quite comfortable once the Sun went down although the fans/misters were very useful the first hour or two. In any case, people seemed to do fine and enjoyed hanging out, talking, listening to the music and the readings.

Some of these beer tasting events are absolutely huge, but I suspect the more intimate feel of this event may become a major attraction. It will grow in the future, but we should try hard to maintain the feel of this first event.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: In a future newsletter I expect to run an “official” thank you for all the volunteers that made this event a success.]

--- SUN JUNE 24 - BILL CRAIG ROVES INTO PHOENIX ONCE AGAIN

On Sunday, June 24, 2007, The Irish Cultural Center will be presenting Bill Craig in Concert at 6:00 pm. Admission is $10.00.

Bill Craig is an Irish entertainer based in Toronto, Canada. Bill has been performing for over 30 years and is an accomplished guitarist and vocalist, performing all over the world. Bill has resumed his solo career after a brief spell as a member of the Irish Rovers and delights audiences with his lively performances. He continues to release collections of songs that capture the spirit of the music and the heart of the listener.

"A man with the heart, voice and spirit to do justice to the songs." -Valerie Rogers, mother of the late Stan Rogers

Bill works regularly, and has performed at venues across Canada, the United States, and in Europe. He has shared the stage at festivals with such performers as Eric Bogle, Andy Irvine, Dougie MacLean, Battlefield Band and Mary Black. In 1987, he performed at the Roskilde fest in Denmark with Van Morrison, Paul Brady and Moving Hearts. Bill has played the Glasgow festival three times, Skagen fest in Denmark twice and Canada's largest fest, Mariposa. In the U.S., Bill has played pubs and clubs in such cities as Buffalo, Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix, San Diego and Washington, D.C. At various times he has performed live on PBS radio, including the Cleveland Poetry project, and live from Standing Rock U. (Kent State) He has also performed throughout Holland, Denmark and the U.K. for twenty years.

Bill Craig's performance is relaxed eclectic, thought provoking, goofy and entertaining. His casual attitude is designed to include, not exclude his audience, be it eight or eight hundred people. Bill puts all his energy into his songs and makes a point of having a good time on stage. This usually translates to his audience having a similar experience.

--- SAT JUNE 30 - DIANA GABALDON HELPS CELEBRATE CELTIC LITERATURE

Attention Outlander fans! The Arizona Celtic Cultural Association is proud to bring Diana Gabaldon to the Center. June is literary month at the Irish Cultural Center with the celebration of Bloomsday and the welcoming of best selling novelist, Diana Gabaldon.

The presentation is scheduled for June 30 at 7:30 PM at the Center. Admission is free; donations are being accepted to help fill the Library building fund. The Irish Cultural Center library will be Arizona’s only comprehensive learning annex of Celtic studies and Celtic literature.

Ms. Gabaldon will be speaking about her favored Outlander and Lord John series and the inspirations for which these best sellers have come. The Outlander and Lord John series, popular with the Celtic crowd, tells the story of Jamie Fraser, a Scottish Highlander from the 18th century, and his time-traveling wife, Claire. The latest book in the series is A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The Poisoned Pen will be on hand providing those missing editions for your collection.

For additional information, please contact the Irish Cultural Center at 602-258-0109 or the ACCA at 623-561-2721.

The Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra is a collection of dedicated young people who come together to keep alive the traditional music of Scotland. Their music has entertained all over the world having performed in numerous locations, from rural community centers on the Isle of Skye to the Sydney Opera House, and from retirement homes in Oslo to the lawn of the White House.

The AFO was founded in August 1982 by Wallace and Lex Galbraith, who are both string instrument tutors in Ayrshire, south west Scotland. The Orchestra has steadily matured since those early beginnings and now has 130 violinists, cellists, bass players and percussionists from 10 to 18 years old. The eminent Scots fiddler and former member of the orchestra, Alistair McCulloch is now musical director of the AFO.

It promises to be a truly special and unique Scottish evening in the desert. Please give the orchestra a listen at www.fiddleorchestra.com.
