Featured in the film, "Titanic", Gaelic Storm tours aggressively and plays over 125 dates a year. Gaelic Storm routinely breaks attendance and merchandise sales records, pushing their popularity beyond the World music genre and into the mainstream music consciousness.
Gaelic Storm released their fifth album "How Are We Getting Home?" in August 2004 which debuted at #3 on the Billboard World Music Charts and #10 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart and re-entered the September 2005 World Albums Chart at #3. Their previous four albums have all charted high on the Billboard World Music Chart, including reaching the #2 position on three different occasions. Since their self-titled first album and their appearance in the film Titanic, Gaelic Storm continues to thunder onto stages around the world attracting larger and larger crowds.
[EDITOR'S NOTE: The ICC is co-hosting the program and will have an information booth for the Arizona Irish Festival. Ticket sales have been brisk (over 50 by the ICC alone) so definitely call 602-258-0109 for information.]
3. CROFT TO GIVE PRESENTATION AT ICC ON FRI, JUNE 23
On Friday, June 23, 2006
7:00 pm Admission is $5.00
Irish Cultural Center located at 1106 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004 will be presenting C.R.O.F.T. on Medieval Crafts.
Celtic Re-enactment Organziation for Fellowship and Trade
C.R.O.F.T. is an organization whose goal to promote fellowship while researching lifestyles and trades concurrent with the Celtic Peoples from 400 BC until 1746 AD. Although most members claim Scots, Irish or Welsh ancestry and do Celtic re-enactment, it is our intent to open participation to anyone with an interest in period crafting and entertainment, no matter what his/her ethnicity.
The sense of being a real village surrounding Croft is vital to promote a feeling of family and fellowship which was a reality in earlier times. Croft is a family-oriented and kid-friendly organization. www.crofters.org/index.html
For further information, please call (602) 258-0109 or check www.azirish.org/newsletter .
4. GAELIC SPORTS BY DENIS KELLY OF THE GAELS AT ICC ON FRI, JUNE 30
7:00 PM Admission $5
Irish football and hurling are sports unique to Ireland and have played a significant role in Irish culture. Denis Kelly of the Phoenix Gaels Irish football team will talk about how the games are played and how people can get involved.
The following is from www.phoenixgaels.com
"Gaelic Football can be said to be a mixture of soccer, rugby and basketball, although it predates all of those games. It is a field game, which has evolved along similar lines as Australian Rules Football. Indeed, Australian Rules Football is a spin off of Gaelic Football, as the Irish game was brought to Australia by the waves of immigrants over the last two centuries."
"The origins of Gaelic games predate recorded history. Bardic sources provide an insight into the character of the pre-GAA games. Hurling predominates, but there are also references to football. Fragments of the ancient Brehon Laws show that hurling was regulated from at least the eighth century. After the Norman Invasion of the 12th century, hurling was restricted by the English Crown. Foreign visitors to Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries noted that hurling and football occupied an important place in the social life of the community.
In August 1884, Michael Cusack and Maurice Davin met a group of nationalists in Loughrea, County Galway, and outlined their plans to establish a national organization, the Gaelic Athletic Association, for Irish athletes and to revive hurling. Dr. T. W. Croke (Archbishop of Cashel) became the first patron of the Association, and Croke Park in Dublin (the Association Headquarters) is named in his honor."
Here are some of the rules for Gaelic Football:
1. The ball can be carried in the hand for a distance of four steps and can be kicked or "hand-passed", a striking motion with the hand or fist.
2. After every four steps the ball must either be bounced or "solo-ed", an action of dropping the ball onto the foot and kicking it back into the hand.
3. You may not bounce the ball twice in a row.
4. To score, you put the ball over the crossbar by foot or hand/fist for one point or under the crossbar and into the net by foot or the hand/fist in certain circumstances for a goal, the latter being the equivalent of three points.
For further information on the program, please call (602) 258-0109 or check www.azirish.org/newsletter
