--- ARIZONA CELTIC COMMUNITY MOURNS ONE OF THEIR OWN
-------------------------------------------------------------
Written By Michelle Campbell for www.azirish.org
The entire Irish community in Arizona suffered a tremendous loss on Saturday, June 20, when Patty Boyle McCrossan passed away. Patty is that beaming smile we all were greeted with for years at the McCrossan family Irish gift shop, Ireland's Own. Recently, Pat and Patty have ran the gift shop at the Irish Cultural Center. Patty could be found often sharing stories and charming all our guests. It is a sad day for all of us that we will feel her smile only within our hearts.
The viewing is being held at Hansen's Chapel, Wednesday, June 24th from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Hansen Chapel is located at 8314 N 7th St, Phoenix, AZ 85020, located just south of Butler on the west side of the street. Hansen's can be reached at 602-944-1561.
Funeral Mass is Thursday, June 25th at 10:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 4715 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85012, located just south of Camelback Road on the east side of the street 602-279-9547.
Burial immediately following at St. Francis Cemetery, 2033 North 48th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85008, located between McDowell Road and Thomas Road on the east side of the street.
Gathering afterwards at O’Connor’s Pub, 2601 West Dunlap, Phoenix, AZ 85021, located just east of the I17 on the south side of the street. 602-997-7714.

6. GRAND CANYON CELTIC ARTS ACADEMY JULY 14 TO 16
Our inaugural year is quickly approaching and we are very excited to be bringing three outstanding musicians from Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Brett Lipshutz, Randy Gosa, and Devin McCabe. Classes are being offered in Irish flute, whistle, fiddle, tenor banjo (mandolins welcome), DADGAD guitar and bodhran. The camp is taking place July 15-16, with an evening orientation taking place on July 14. For more information, you can email Kari@GrandCanyonCelticArts.org or call 928-600-1365.
BODHRAN – RANDY GOSA
The Bodhrán class will focus on active listening and melodic awareness, as applied to percussion. Bodhrán players will be asked to adopt the mindset of a melody player and consider how that might influence their rhythmic choices on the drum. The goal of the workshop will be to challenge players to think in rhythmic, structural ways while also applying unique melodic embellishments to each tune.
TENOR BANJO – RANDY GOSA
The tenor banjo class will focus on various techniques of the right and left hand as we learn new tunes. Banjos should be four-string and in standard GDAE tuning. Mandolin players are welcome in this class.
GUITAR – RANDY GOSA
The Guitar class will be taught in DADGAD tuning. We will look at picking hand techniques and talk about popular rhythms and strumming patterns while using a collection of fundamental chord shapes in the DADGAD tuning. Keeping the picking hand in mind, we’ll look at ways to alter and “re-voice” chords that are being used for any given progression. We’ll also focus on chord substitution and when/why to use them.
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED WHISTLE – BRETT LIPSHUTZ
In this class, we will concentrate on technique. Through looking at several different kinds of tunes (hornpipe, reel, jig, slip jig, polka and slow air), we will cover the basics of rolls, cuts, crans, slides and tonguing and how these techniques fit into the tunes. We will also look at a few secrets for learning by ear. Students should be able to play a few tunes at a moderate tempo. Please bring a ‘D’ whistle.
INTERMEDIATE FLUTE – BRETT LIPSHUTZ
In this class, we will begin to learn Irish tunes,
especially those we refer to as “flute tunes”. We will work on embouchure and getting the most out of the diaphragm, as well as some basic ornaments. Instruction will be by ear,but sheet music will be available. Silver flutes welcome, but the instructor will play the Irish flute.
ADVANCED FLUTE – BRETT LIPSHUTZ
In this class, we will work on breath pulsing , ornaments such as taps and double taps, slides, etc. We will look at different flute styles and learn some tunes (reels and jigs but also couple of barn dances and waltzes). If time permits, we’ll talk about playing for dancers.
INTERMEDIATE FIDDLE – DEVIN MCCABE
This level is for students who already play confidently on the violin and are ready to learn some of the techniques used in Irish fiddling. Tunes will be taught by ear along with an introduction to Irish-style ornamentation.
ADVANCED FIDDLE – DEVIN MCCABE
Students playing at the advanced level will already have developed a repertoire of Irish tunes and are interested in refining their styles, including improving ornamentation and phrasing.
